EDUC 450: Professional Clinical Practice Reflective Lesson Plan Model

Name: Quincy Agnew Date:

PART I: PLANNING
Title of Lesson aROUND we go
Source Lesson was devised in cooperation with my cooperating teacher.
Mathematics
Subject Area (s)
3rd Grade
Grade Level
3.NSBT.1 Use place value understanding to round whole numbers
to the nearest 10 or 100
(Curriculum Standards)

Describe the lesson’s activities and content to provide a clear

Description and Background overview of the lesson.
Information
The students will have a introduction to the process of rounding to
the nearest tens through a video on flocabulary. I will then ask
students about number proximity to the nearest ten (possibly using
a number line). I will engage in a think-a-loud to show the students
one process to complete a rounding problem and to explain the
reasons for the processa dn how it comes to the correct answer. The
class will walk through a few problems together while everyone will
be restating the learned process and rules to rounding to nearest
ten. After the procedures are understood the students will complete
a worksheet on rounding. To end the lesson the students will write
down the procedure learned today and how they would round a
number to the nearest ten using the steps.

Lesson Objectives What will students be able to do at the conclusion of this lesson? Make
sure that your objective(s) are measurable.

By the end of this lesson the learner will able to correctly round a
two digit number to the nearest ten with 90% accuracy.

Varying Objectives for

Individuals Needs How will I vary these objectives for students who do not understand the
material?
Students will be able to determine the closest proximity of a number
to the nearest ten using a number line with 85% accuracy,

How will I vary these objectives for students who have already mastered
the concept?
Students who have mastered the content will round three digit
numbers to the nearest ten and hundred with 90% accuracy.

How will I vary these objectives for students who are presently learning
English?
Students will be able to determine closest proximity of a number to
nearest ten using a number line with 80% accuracy.

Why is it important for the students to learn this content?

Statement of Purpose
This process will help develop number sense this content also helps
develop the skill of estimation.

What materials and supplies are needed to help your students achieve
Materials and Resources the stated objectives? What will the teacher need? What will the
students need? What other resources are needed? Will you use resource
speakers?
For this lesson I will use the clear touch board, worksheets, pencils,
and number chips.

Anticipatory Set What will you do to motivate the students and get their attention?
What is the “hook” that will serve as a focus for the lesson’s activities?

To get my students attention I will play a flocabulary video that

introduces a method of rounding.

Part II: IMPLEMENTATION

How will I find out what students already know about this topic?
Pre-assessment
I will ask students about what number ending in 0 is 39 closest to,
then repeat with more numbers; 11, 34, 35,36,99,78, etc…
What will I do to show students what is expected?
Teacher Modeling or
Demonstration I will engage the students in a think-a-loud where I round the
numbers 75 and 26 to the nearest ten, allowing for questions about
the process as I move along
The students will come up and recite “rounding rules” as they work
Guided Practice through a rounding problem on the clear touch board.

I will ask the students to recall the rounding rules or procedures. I

Checking for Understanding will then ask why certain numbers are rounded up and certain are
rounded down.
Students will complete a rounding two digit numbers to nearest ten
worksheet
Independent Practice
I will bring up how rounding is very important to estimation and
Closure approximation of number and amounts of objects.

After monitoring the students work during independent I will have

Assessment the students take out a blank sheet of paper and write out the steps
(attach to lesson plan) to how they would round 46 to the nearest ten. This will be to
ensure that they have grasped the concept of rounding and would
be able to make it applicable in other situations.
Students could estimate the number of marbles in a bag then round
Extension Activities the actual amount to the nearest ten to see how close the estimate
was to the rounded figure.

The clear touch board will allow students to interact during think-
a-loud and promote understanding.
Technology
How will you connect this lesson with other content areas across
the curriculum?

Connection Across the The Arts:The flocabulary video will connect math to music
Curriculum Health: N/A
Physical Education: N/A

PART III: REFLECTION ( Complete JOURNAL RESPONSE after individual lesson

presentation responding to three items below.) ** Submit next class after presentation.

My strengths were cooperative learning as I adjusted and allowed

a think pair share moment after the independent practice was
Strengths complete. The lesson required verbal communication and I was able
to control the volume of the class and keep the classroom dialogue
content focused,
Weaknesses One weakness was my transition time between activities but I was
able to still finish everything in my allotted time.
Suggestions for I would give more directives before transitioning and add time for a
Improvement game to be sure their perspective of concept is consistent
