 Racism debate made by Stan Grant

 Member of the Wiradjuri tribe of Indigenous Australians from the south-west inland
region of NSW
 The Wiradjuri also have roots in inner Victoria, which is where he spent much of his
childhood.

 Attended a dozen different primary schools. He was often persecuted at new schools
because of his colour, and his attendance was always sporadic
 Stan was encouraged to act as a role model for Aboriginal people in prisons, schools,
and depressed communities
 Very critical of Christian evangelist’s treatment of Aboriginal people.
 Stan senior punished his son by beating him with a strap or punching him .
 Stan feared his father, and was constantly worried he would abandon the family.
 later in life, after meeting his half sister Deb, did Stan understand his father’s
behaviour as a response to harsh treatment by the authorities.
 textual integrity is how all features of a text (techniques, ideas, structure etc), in your
case, speeches, work together to present a whole idea/theme/value. So basically,
how everything ties together to present a core idea and add to the value of the text.
 Stan believes that the notion of Indigenous culture that underpins modern
Aboriginal nationalism had been transformed and commodified.
CONTEXT:

 His speech was at that time (23rd Jan 2016) referring to the recent booing of the AFL
player Adam Goodes.
 Adam Goodes was booed in a game in August 2015 by AFL fans and humiliated
 His response to a girl calling him a “monkey” made Adam Goodes answer back
AUDIENCE:

 Grant’s powerful voice engaged the audience fully
 Grant made eye contact continuously whist making the speech
 Emphasises points to the audience by making good hand gestures
 He addressed the audience on the impact of colonisation and discrimination
PURPOSE:

 In his address Grant was asked to argue for or against the topic "Racism is destroying
the Australian Dream", and said racism was at its heart
 has told a Sydney audience that racism is “at the heart of the Australian dream,” as
he delivered a sobering speech about the impact of colonisation and discrimination
on Indigenous people and their ancestors.
