- Day one consisted of a briefing of the importance of advocating for pharmacy progression,
the importance of proper communication to state congressmen and women, and the
current progressing policies of the time. Day two consisted of 2 pharmacists, a Butler
student, and myself going to various Capitol Hill offices to speak with representatives from
Indiana.
PGY-1 Community Pharmacy Practice Residency Program
Daily Tasks of Topeka Pharmacy
- Manage and assist with patient care activities and programs such as medication therapy
management, medication synchronization programs, and Topeka Pharmacy diabetes
education program. The pharmacy actively promotes immunizations and healthier living by
being heavily involved in counseling patients on over-the-counter products. Staffing position
8 hours per week and one weekend per month.

Daily Task of Purdue University


- Assist in leading Purdue University Pharmacy students’ lab courses for professional years 1,
2, and 3. Assist in the development of labs for the students. On-site lab facilitator for Friday
and occasionally Monday labs. Grade assignments and exams. Evaluate and provide
feedback to students on all education levels.

Topeka Pharmacy Diabetes Education Program


- At least four hours per week are dedicated to the advancement of the Diabetes Education
Program. In addition to the clients, responsibilities include redesigning and updating
education materials and developing the advertising department of the diabetes education
program. A push to build relationships with local physicians’ offices by providing “lunch ‘n
learn” opportunities.

CQI: Benchwork Process Improvement


- (in progress) Improvement in Error Reporting While Working the Bench Initiative
o Error reporting has declined over the years while at Topeka Pharmacy. CQI is
focused around developing a more efficient and manageable way to report errors
without interrupting workflow for both pharmacists and pharmacy technicians.

Business Plan
- (in progress) Topeka Pharmacy: Diabetes Education Program 2.0
o Topeka Pharmacy has an established diabetes education program led by a
registered dietician/CDE. She develops, leads, and promotes the education program.
With Topeka taking on a new resident in the future, the addition of a pharmacist
would benefit the program. This business plan outlines the details of adding a
pharmacist to the Topeka Pharmacy: Diabetes Education Program.

- Patients with diabetes were referred to our services. With the collaborative care agreement
established, we were able to manage the patients’ diabetes care along with giving written
suggestions to the physicians for other therapeutic care options.

- Suggestions were considered and reasoning behind therapeutic decisions were
documented. Daily discussions for patient care were performed. Collaborative rounding
took place and patient care observed. Medication counseling.

- Reviewed medication for appropriateness of use in the elderly. Verification of outgoing
medication dispensing. Sat in on meetings regarding employee management and

- Worked alongside medical residence, a diabetes educator, and a pharmacist to monitor
patients' diabetes. Medication counseling. Ran smoking cessation cessions as well as
diabetes follow-up appointments. Educated patients regarding medications. Assessed
adherence and addressed issues to adherence: cost, administration technique, complexity
of regimen, etc.
