God's Creations
Foreword

As you read this month’s devotions, you may think that I

am into “nature’s foods.” Do not be misled – if it is
edible, I will eat it!

I do, however, find the study of God’s plant life

interesting: just to see how God created the foods we
need and how those foods have not only a physical use
but also a spiritual meaning.

I trust this month’s devotional will be a blessing to you

as we focus on God’s creation.
The Apple
May 1

 Bible Reading: Song of Solomon 7

 Key Verse: Verse 8 - " I said, I will go up to the palm
tree, I will take hold of the boughs thereof: now also
thy breasts shall be as clusters of the vine, and the
smell of thy nose like apples;”
Key Words: smell of thy nose like apples

The apple is a favorite fruit in the Middle East, and though

they do not grow any of the fine variety of apples of which we
are accustomed to eating, they still grow several varieties of
apples.
In the Middle East, they habitually smell an apple to
revive them when they feel faint (Song of Solomon 2:5).
During Solomon’s day, it was a rare fruit and greatly loved
(Solomon 2:3, and 8:5).
When it comes to the apple, did you know that there are
over 7,200 varieties worldwide; and they come in all shapes,
sizes, and colors?
Apples spread across America, thanks to an itinerant
preacher by the name of John Chapman. Chapman spread
apple seeds all across his property. As the trees grew, he
began to sell the apples or even give them away, whichever
suited his fancy. Chapman began spreading apple seeds
everywhere he went. His desire was for others to enjoy the
fruit as much as he did. You probably know John Chapman
better as Johnny Appleseed.
Apples have many health benefits. Their fibrous juicy
nature helps to clean our teeth and exercise our gums. Apples
are said to remove impurities from the liver. It is said that, if
eaten daily, the apple can help prevent skin disease, arthritis
and liver problems.
The apple reminds us of God’s Word. John 15:7 says,
“Now ye are clean through the words which I have spoken
unto you.”
Just as the apple removes impurities from the body, God’s
Word removes impurities from the soul. So I will let you
decide if you need an apple a day, but we all need a daily bite
from God’s Word.

What to do:
✞Eat daily from God’s Word. It is sweet and
refreshing to the soul.

Grapes of Blessing
May 2

 Bible Reading: Numbers 13:17-25

 Key Verse: Verse 23- " And they came unto the brook
of Eshcol, and cut down from thence a branch with
one cluster of grapes, and they bare it between two
upon a staff; and they brought of the pomegranates,
and of the figs.”
Key Words: a branch with one cluster of grapes

If you will notice from our text, the cluster of grapes that
was cut down was of such a size and weight that it took two
men to carry it.
Grapes are often used symbolically in the Bible. For
example, Israel’s sin is compared to wild grapes in Isaiah 5:2.
The sins of the rebellious world are judged in “the great
winepress of God’s wrath” (Revelation 14:18-20).
Yet grapes are most often used in a positive way in the
Bible. Grapes symbolize abundance and prosperity (Numbers
13:23). They also symbolize the divine blessings of God in the
ages to come (Amos 9:13).
In my study for this devotion, I was surprised to learn that
there are over 6,000 varieties of grapes world-wide, but only
fifty of these varieties are commercially important. In
America, the two most popular types of grapes would be the
Concord (it is your large purple grape) and the Thompson
seedless grape. This one is the most popular grape (by sales)
in America. Its light green skin is tart in taste, but the juicy
sweet meat is most of the taste.
Grapes are the number one selling fruit in the world,
sometimes dried for raisins, or crushed for juice, or canned
for jelly and fruit cocktail. They are used in salads, desserts,
pies, etc. Eaten alone they provide a low-calorie snack.
Like all fruit, grapes are good for your health. They help
to detoxify the body and help build iron-rich blood. Grapes
taste good and are good for you.
Grapes remind us of the blessings of God. So the next
time you eat a grape, let it be a reminder to you of God’s
blessings in your life

What to do:
✞When you see grapes, remember the blessings of
God.

The Fig and Israel

May 3

 Bible Reading: Mark 13:14-37

 Key Verse: Verse 28– " Now learn a parable of the fig
tree; When her branch is yet tender, and putteth forth
leaves, ye know that summer is near:”
Key Words: Now learn the parable of the fig tree

I have had the privilege of visiting Israel on two occasions.

It was during those visits that it became very obvious to me
that the fig was one of, if not the most, favorite article of food
there.
The fig tree differs from almost all other fruit trees in that
its fruit is green and inconspicuous. It is concealed among the
leaves until the time of ripening.
As you study God’s Word, you will find that God often
uses the fig as an illustration. For example, it is used to
illustrate the nation of Israel in Isaiah 34, and it is used to
illustrate the second coming in Matthew 24.
Ah, the fig tree! Have you ever eaten a fig? Ok, Ok…so
figs are not the most exotic of the fruits; but I like them,
especially in the form of jelly, or even better yet, cookies…you
know, the Fig Newton Bar. I know, calories galore! Fat gram
city! But they are still good.
Figs can be healthy. They are known for their restorative
power. Pliny, the Roman Naturalist, wrote, “Figs are
restorative and the best of the fruits that can be used by those
who are brought low by sickness.” Figs provide energy and
vitality because of their sugar content. If you do not drink
milk, add figs to your diet; they are a good source of calcium.
Did you know that figs are the first fruit mentioned in the
Bible? Remember how Adam and Eve covered their
nakedness with fig leaves?
Ah, the fig! You cannot think about it without
thinking about the nation of Israel (Mark 13:28). So the next
time you see or eat a fig, think about and pray for the nation
of Israel

What to do:
✞Remember, the fig, above all other fruits symbolizes
Israel; so when you see a fig, remember to pray for
Israel.

Nuts
May 4

 Bible Reading: Song of Solomon 6

 Key Verse: Verse 11 – "“I went down into the garden
of nuts to see the fruits of the valley, and to see
whether the vine flourished, and the pomegranates
budded.”
Key Words: the garden of nuts

Most scholars agree that the nuts referred to in our text

are pistachio nuts. Did you know that the pistachio nut is full
of nutrition? It is said that the pistachio nut may help reduce
the risk of heart disease. The nut also helps to calm acute
stress. It is also believed that the pistachio can help in the
area of weight management. It is also filled with fiber and
vitamins. I enjoy eating pistachio nuts simply because I think
they are delicious.
According to Genesis 43:11, they were also used as a prized
gift.
When my wife and I were in Israel, our Israeli tour guide
for some reason connected with the two of us. One day to our
great amazement, he gave us a gift. To my wife, he gave an
expensive piece of jewelry; and I received a container of
pistachio nuts. Now, on the surface it appears as though my
wife got the better gift; but according to the custom of the
Middle East, a gift of jewelry for the women is the highest
form of a compliment; and for men – you guessed it – either
ointment, fruit, or pistachio nuts.
If you buy pistachio nuts fresh in the Middle East, they are
quite expensive: around $20.00 a pound. Their high price is
doubtless one of the reasons they are considered such a great
gift.
I am reminded of another gift that came at a high price.
That gift is our salvation; and the price is the blood of Jesus
Christ. So the next time you see or hear of a pistachio nut,
remember what Jesus did for you on Calvary.

What to do:
✞Every time you think of the pistachio, let it remind
you of what we have through Jesus Christ: everlasting
life.
The Pomegranate
May 5

 Bible Reading: I Samuel 14:1-14

 Key Verse: Verse 2 – " And Saul tarried in the
uttermost part of Gibeah under a pomegranate tree
which is in Migron: and the people that were with
him were about six hundred men;"
Key Words: And Saul tarried in the uttermost part
of Gibeah under a pomegranate tree

The name pomegranate comes from the Latin word

meaning “the fruit of many seeds.” The pomegranate
originated in Persia (Iran-Iraq).
Snacking on pomegranates can be laborious, as the
edible seeds must be selected almost one by one to avoid the
bitter-tasting membranes that house them. The pomegranate
is about the size of an apple, and it has a leathery, rosy-red
skin. While originating in Persia, the pomegranate is a
popular fruit in all of the Middle East. It is high in protein,
carbohydrates, and fiber; and it is a good source of Vitamin C.
Another thing the pomegranate does is fight against intestinal
disease caused by tapeworms.
In our text, we find Jonathan, the son of King Saul,
and Jonathan’s armor-bearer leaving Saul and his troops
behind while they proceed to defeat the enemy. While Saul
and his men are resting in a pomegranate orchard, Jonathan
is fighting the battle his father should have been fighting. The
pomegranate reminds us not to tarry, not to be lazy, when
there is work to be done – not to sleep when we should be out
about the business of God.
Speaking of laziness, I recently read about an old
mountaineer and his wife who were sitting in front of the
fireplace one evening, just whiling away the time. After a long
silence, the wife said, “Jed, I think it is raining. Get up, and
look outside and see.”
The old mountaineer continued to gaze into the fire
and finally sighed, “Ah, Ma, let’s just call the dog and see if
he’s wet.”
Now, that’s laziness. The pomegranate reminds us not
to be lazy. So, the next time you see or hear of the
pomegranate, let it remind you not to be lazy, but to be about
the Master’s business.

What to do:
✞Remember the pomegranate, and do not be lazy

The Water and the Cucumber

May 6

 Bible Reading: Numbers 11:1-9

 Key Verse: Verse 5 " We remember the fish, which we
did eat in Egypt freely; the cucumbers, and the
melons, and the leeks, and the onions, and the
garlick:"
Key Words: We remember…the cucumbers

There are two primary varieties of cucumbers. There are

slicers and picklers. Slicers are for fresh use, such as in salads
or vegetable trays; whereas picklers are, of course, used to
make pickles. Cucumbers are a member of the gourd family,
which also contains melons, squash, and pumpkins.
Cucumbers grow on a vine in sandy soil. The sand gets warm
during the summer giving the cucumber a more favorable
growing environment.
Cucumbers are 95% water, which means they do not
contain a lot of nutrients. However, they are low in fat,
sodium, cholesterol, and calories. Cucumbers also contain
Vitamins A and C.
From our text in Numbers 11, you can see that the
cucumber was a favorite of the people of Israel. The
cucumber, because of the amount of water it contains,
reminds us of God’s Word. We are told in John 15:3, “Now ye
are clean through the word which I have spoken unto you.”
In Ephesians 5:26 we read, “That he might sanctify and
cleanse it with the washing of water by the word...”
J. Wilbur Chapman tells the following story:
A number of travelers were making their way across the
desert. The last drop of water had been exhausted, and they
were pushing on with the hope that more might be found.
They were growing weaker and weaker. As a last resort they
divided their men into companies and sent them on, one in
advance of the other, in this way securing a rest they so much
needed. If they who were in the advance guard were able to
find the springs, they were to shout the good tidings to the
men who were the nearest to them, and so they were to send
the message along.
The long line reached far across the desert. They were
fainting by the way when, suddenly, everyone was cheered by
the good news. The leader of the first company had found the
springs of water. He stood at the head of his men shouting
until the farthest man had heard his cry: “Water! Water!”
The word went from mouth to mouth, until the whole
company of men heard the sound, quickened their pace, and
soon were drinking to their hearts’ content.
I have found the Water of Life; it is flowing fully; it is
flowing freely. And so I stand and cry: “Water! Water!” Take
up the cry, everyone, until every thirsty soul shall drink and
live.
So the next time you see a cucumber, remember the Word
of God: the Water of Life.

What to do:
✞Every time you see a cucumber, remember the Word
of God, and how important it should be in your life.
The Barley Fields
May 7

 Bible Reading: Ruth 2:4-23

 Key Verse: Verse 23 – "“So she kept fast by the
maidens of Boaz to glean unto the end of barley
harvest and of wheat harvest; and dwelt with her
mother in law.”
Key Words: to glean unto the end of barley

Did you know that barley is a member of the grass, or

poaceae family, and is primarily a cereal grain? It was once
one of the only major staple food sources in Israel.
There are various types of barley available, which
include whole barley, hulled barley, pearled barley, as well as
barley flakes. Barley contains copper, phosphorus, and zinc.
It is also rich in fiber and has been known to lower high blood
cholesterol. Barley also contains calcium and iron. It
contains zero fat and zero cholesterol.
If you will remember in John 6:9-10, in the story of the
lad with five loaves and two fish, the loaves of bread were five
barley loaves. Barley was known as the bread of the poor.
The point being that God can use even the poor and lowly to
accomplish His will when they surrender their lives to Him.
The answer for the poor is not bread, but Jesus.
A little over a century ago, Leo Tolstoy tried puzzling
out a plan to rid Moscow of the poor and homeless. The
famed novelist and wealthy aristocrat first went to the worst
hovels in town and gave money to beggars. He realized,
however, that he had been “cheated by men who said they
only needed money to buy a railway ticket home” when he
would spot them still in town days later. Next, Tolstoy spent
several months helping take the Moscow census, searching for
the “truly” needy. But Tolstoy saw the homeless could not be
helped merely by “feeding and clothing a thousand people as
one feeds and drives under shelter a thousand sheep.” At last,
he sadly concluded, “Of all the people I noted down, I really
helped none… I did not find any unfortunates who could be
made fortunate by a mere gift of money.” Jesus truly is the
answer. As we meet the physical needs of the homeless, let us
give them the bread and water of life, which will truly set them
free.
The next time you see barley bread, think of how Jesus
can use you if you will only surrender your will to do His will.

What to do:
✞Remember that barley is the poor man’s bread, and
the next time you see or eat barley bread, remember
that God can use you.

The Anise Plant

May 8

 Bible Reading: Matthew 23:17-39

 Key Verse: Verse 23 – “Woe unto you, scribes and
Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye pay tithe of mint and
anise and cummin, and have omitted the weightier
matters of the law, judgment, mercy, and faith: these
ought ye to have done, and not to leave the other
undone."
Key Words: anise

The anise plant is an herbal, aromatic plant. Every

part of the plant is used as a food source: the bulb, the leaves,
the seeds, and the root.
The therapeutic vines of the anise plant have been
known since ancient times. The anise plant enhances man’s
strength, cures insomnia, and stimulates the appetite. Anise
contains Vitamins B1 and B2, C, calcium, phosphorous,
potassium, sulfur, iron, and aromatic essences. As a food,
anise is used for cooking sweet and spicy dishes.
In the Bible, the anise plant is a picture of tithing (see
Matthew 23:23). So when you think of the anise plant, think
about tithing.
A church was trying to pay for a new building over a
period of three years. They asked the church members to
pledge how much money they would be willing to give for the
new building over the next three years. A poor washwoman
belonged to the church. She sent in her pledge card with a
commitment of $468.00 (this was back when a dollar was a
dollar). The pastor and the deacons just couldn’t believe she
could give so much so they went to see her.
They told her, “We know that you love the Lord and
want to help with the new building, but you cannot afford to
give $468 in three years to the building program. All you do
is wash clothes to make a living.”
She replied, “No, I figured it up. I wash three places a
day, but I have got another place I can wash. I have turned it
down because I have been so tired, but I have decided to do it
for the next three years. I am going to give that extra money
to the building program.” Then she continued, “Do not cheat
me out of this privilege!” So instead of doing three washes a
day in the neighborhood, she took four and she called the
fourth “the Lord’s wash.” Imagine how much more we could
do for the Lord if we had the commitment of this woman!
So when you think of the anise plant, think about your
financial commitment to God.

What to do:
✞Remember the anise plant and giving…and
remember, you cannot out-give God.

Onions and Tears

May 9
 Bible Reading: Psalm 126
 Key Verse: Verse 6 – " He that goeth forth and
weepeth, bearing precious seed, shall doubtless come
again with rejoicing, bringing his sheaves with him.”
Key Words: He that goeth forth and weepeth
Did you know that onions are low in calories? Onions
have only about thirty calories per serving. Onions have no
sodium or fat and are cholesterol-free. The onion provides
fiber, Vitamin C, B6, potassium, and other key nutrients.
Onions also contain generous amounts of quercetin.
Quercetin is believed to help protect against cataracts,
cardiovascular disease, and cancer. In addition, onions
contain a variety of other natural occurring chemicals known
as organosulfur. Organosulfur has been linked to lowering
blood pressure and cholesterol levels.
If you have ever sliced an onion, you know that tears
and onions seem to go together. Before you can reap the good
of the onion, you have to experience the tears.
Have you ever considered the following: the sound and
reason for crying changes, but never does it stop. All infants
do it everywhere—even in public. By adulthood, most crying
is done alone and in the dark. Weeping, for babies, is a sign of
health and evidence that they are alive. Isn’t this a chilling
omen? Not laughter, but tears are the life sign.
So the next time you are slicing that onion and tears
start to flow, remember that tears, not laughter, are a sign of
health and life

What to do:
✞When you see or taste an onion, remember that
tears are a sign of life.

Wheat and Salvation

May 10

 Bible Reading: Matthew 13:24-30

 Key Verse: Verse 25 – " But while men slept, his
enemy came and sowed tares among the wheat, and
went his way "
Key Words: and sowed tares among the wheat
We are told that the consumption of wheat is
necessary for a healthy metabolism. We are also told that
wheat helps prevent breast cancer, gallstones, high
cholesterol, asthma, and heart risk; and it is an essential food
for women to help in the area of gastro-intestinal disorders. It
is believed to help reduce the risk of high blood pressure and
diabetes. It is rich in Vitamin B6, niacin, thiamine, folate,
riboflavin, and pantothenic acid. It also contains Vitamins E
and K.
It is obvious from reading our text that wheat is
symbolic of those who are genuinely born again; and the tares
symbolize those who are pretenders. They profess to be saved
but have no possession of Jesus Christ.
Now this raises a question, have you ever asked Jesus
to be your Savior?
During the Spanish-American War, Clara Barton was
overseeing the work of the Red Cross in Cuba. One day,
Colonel Theodore Roosevelt came to her and wanted to buy
food for his sick and wounded Rough Riders. Clara refused to
sell him any. Roosevelt was perplexed. His men needed the
help, and he was prepared to pay out of his own funds.
When he asked those around why he could not buy the
supplies, he was told, “Colonel, just ask for them.” A smile
broke over Roosevelt’s face—now he understood! The
supplies were not for sale. All he had to do was simply ask,
and they would be freely given.
Have you ever asked for Jesus to save you? He will,
and it is a free gift as well.
So the next time you see or taste of wheat, thank God
for your salvation.

What to do:
✞Let wheat remind you of your salvation, and thank
God for it daily

The Olive and Family

May 11

 Bible Reading: Psalm 128

 Key Verse: Verse 3 - " Thy wife shall be as a fruitful
vine by the sides of thine house: thy children like olive
plants round about thy table."
Key Words: thy children like olive plants

Olives are said to be a concentrated source of

monounsaturated fats and a good source of Vitamin E. The
olive is also said to have significant anti-inflammatory
properties. It is also said to help protect from heart disease,
and it helps assist in protection from gastro-intestinal
infections. The olive may also assist in helping those with
asthma and rheumatoid arthritis. And it may also help aid
women in the intensity of hot flashes due to menopause.
From a spiritual perspective, there are three things we
know about the olive plant. First of all, it clings. A husband
and wife should cling together. Secondly, it climbs. The
family should grow together. Thirdly, it clusters: a clear
reference to children. The olive reminds us of the family.
I read the following and found it interesting. I believe
you will as well.
In 1947, sociologist and historian Carle Zimmerman,
in his book Family and Civilization, compared the
disintegration of various cultures with the parallel decline of
family life in those cultures. He found eight specific patterns
of domestic behavior that typified the downward spiral of
each culture he studied.
1. Marriage loses its sacredness and is
frequently broken by divorce.
2. The traditional meaning of the marriage
ceremony is lost.
3. Feminist movements abound.
4. Increased public disrespect for parents
and authority in general.
5. Acceleration of juvenile delinquency,
promiscuity and rebellion.
6. Refusal of people with traditional
marriages to accept family
responsibilities.
7. Growing desire for and acceptance of
adultery.
8. Increasing interest in and spread of
sexual perversions and sex-related
crimes.
This was in 1947, and it is still true today. The key for
the survival of the family is a close relationship with the Lord.
So the next time you see or hear about the olive, remember
the family and in particular, the family’s relationship with
God!

What to do:
✞Remember, the olive reminds us of the family.

The Mustard Seed and Faith

May 12

 Bible Reading: Luke 17:6-19

 Key Verse: Verse 6 – " And the Lord said, If ye had
faith as a grain of mustard seed, ye might say unto
this sycamine tree, Be thou plucked up by the root,
and be thou planted in the sea; and it should obey
you.."
Key Words: If ye had faith as a grain of mustard
seed

There are two primary types of mustard seeds, white

and black (or brown). The primary type of mustard seed that
grew around Jerusalem would have been the black mustard
seed. The soil and temperature were and are conducive for
the mustard tree to grow.
There is little question that from reading our text, the

~ ~ ~ ~ ~
mustard seed is attached to faith. A mustard seed is about the
size of a grain of fertilizer. The principle is that a small
amount of faith can accomplish a lot. But make sure your
faith is in the right person: Jesus Christ. You see, the source
of your faith is extremely important.
In April 1988 the evening news reported on a
photographer who was a skydiver. He had jumped from a
plane along with numerous other skydivers and filmed the
group as they fell and opened their parachutes. As the film
shown on the telecast, and as the final skydiver opened his
chute, the picture went berserk. The announcer reported that
the cameraman had fallen to his death, having jumped out of
the plane without his parachute. It was not until he reached
for the absent ripcord that he realized he was freefalling
without a parachute. Until that point, the jump probably
seemed exciting and fun. But tragically, he had acted with
thoughtless haste and deadly foolishness. Nothing could save
him, for his faith was in a parachute never buckled on. Faith
in anything but an all-sufficient God can be just as tragic
spiritually. Only with faith in Jesus Christ dare we step into
the dangerous excitement of life.

What to do:
✞The next time you see or taste mustard, ask yourself,
“Am I living by faith?” and “Who is the object of my
faith?”

Pannag and Our Spirit

May 13

 Bible Reading: Ezekiel 27:1-25

 Key Verse: Verse 17 – "Judah, and the land of Israel,
they were thy merchants: they traded in thy market
wheat of Minnith, and Pannag, and honey, and oil,
and balm."
Key Words: Pannag

Pannag is not a familiar word in our vocabulary. In

the Hebrew it means pastry. No doubt it was a dessert.
Although it is only mentioned once in the Bible, it was
evidently popular because merchants traded for it. The
pannag reminds us that a sweet spirit goes a lot further than
does a bitter spirit.
Bruce Goodrich was being initiated into the cadet
corps at Texas A & M University. One night, Bruce was forced
to run until he dropped – but he never got up. Bruce
Goodrich died before he even entered college.
A short time after the tragedy, Bruce’s father wrote
this letter to the administration, faculty, student body, and the
Corps of Cadets: “I would like to take this opportunity to
express the appreciation of my family for the great outpouring
of concern and sympathy from Texas A & M University and
the college community over the loss of our son, Bruce. We
were deeply touched by the tribute paid to him in the
battalion. We were particularly pleased to note that his
Christian witness did not go unnoticed during his brief time
on campus.”
Mr. Goodrich went on: “I hope it will be some comfort
to know that we harbor no ill will in the matter. We know our
God makes no mistakes. Bruce had an appointment with his
Lord and is now secure in his celestial home. When the
question is asked, ‘Why did this happen?’ perhaps one answer
will be, ‘So that many will consider where they will spend
eternity.’”
So would you not agree that the sweet spirit of Bruce’s
father accomplished more than being bitter ever could? So
the next time you think of a sweet pastry, think of a sweet
spirit. It goes a lot further than a sour spirit ever could.

What to do:
✞Every time you eat a pastry, I trust you will think of
pannag and having a sweet spirit.
Flax and Protection
May 14

 Bible Reading: Joshua 2:1-8

 Key Verse: Verse 6 - " But she had brought them up to
the roof of the house, and hid them with the stalks of
flax, which she had laid in order upon the roof."
Key Words: and hid them with the stalks of flax

Flax is said to be rich in antioxidants. It also provides

fiber, is believed to assist the body in fighting against cancer-
in particular breast cancer, and tests have shown that flax has
positive benefits in fighting against such things as Crohn’s
Disease and colitis. Flax is also said to help heal the inner
lining of an inflamed intestine.
But in our text it is very obvious that flax was used by
Rahab to hide the two Israeli spies. Flax was used as
protection.
Lorrie Anderson, missionary to the head-shrinking
Candoshi Shapra Indians of Peru, was looking for a quiet
place for her daily time of Bible reading and prayer, so she
went down by the edge of the river. After reading her Bible,
she took up her prayer list. Eyes closed, she did not see the
deadly anaconda weaving through the water until it struck,
burying its fangs into her flesh. It withdrew its fangs only to
strike again. Then just as suddenly as it had struck, the
deadly anaconda slithered off. While Lorrie was being
treated, a witch doctor from a nearby village burst into the
room where Lorrie was and stared at her. The witch doctor
could not believe that Lorrie had survived the attack. It seems
that the witch doctor had chanted to the spirit of the anaconda
that morning and had sent the snake to kill the young
missionary.
“I am certain,” Lorrie said, “that except for the
protection of God, it would have worked.”
So the next time you hear or see or even eat some flax,
think about the protection of God.
What to do:
✞Let flax remind you of God’s protection.

Cinnamon and Appeal

May 15

 Bible Reading: Proverbs 7:1-20

 Key Verse: Verse 17 - “I have perfumed my bed with
myrrh, aloes, and cinnamon."
Key Words: I have perfumed my bed with
...cinnamon

It is believed that cinnamon is very low in saturated

fat, cholesterol and sodium. Cinnamon is a good source of
Vitamin K which helps prevent blood clotting and is a very
good source of dietary fiber and manganese.
It is very obvious from our text that cinnamon is used
as a perfume for drawing appeal as well. Now cinnamon itself
is not bad, it just depends on what we use it for.
It is said that visitors at Niagara Falls often have their
attention called to a certain cliff over the boiling current below
where a young lady some years ago lost her life. She was
delighted with the beautiful scene and eager to pluck some
wild flowers from a cliff where no human hand had ever
ventured. She climbed the cliff and grasped the flowers; but
as she gazed down upon the surging waters below, she became
dizzy; and with a wild shriek she plunged like a falling star to
her death below.
Now, the flowers were not the problem, her desire was
the problem. Our craving for things we should not crave will
always lead us to destruction.
A pastor once told the following. “My friends, the
other day I was going down the street and saw a drove of pigs
following a man. My curiosity was aroused, and I decided to
follow him. This I did, and to my surprise I found he was
leading them to the slaughterhouse. I asked the man how he
managed to get them to follow him. The man answered, ‘Oh,
did you not see that I had a basket of beans under my arm,
and I continued to drop them along, and so they followed
me?’ So it is with the devil. He is dropping his bait, which
may look and taste good to the sinner, but it will lead him to
hell.”
So the next time you see, taste, or smell cinnamon,
remember to keep your cravings under God’s control

What to do:
✞Get God’s wisdom from His Word, not this world!

The Cassia Tree

May 16

 Bible Reading: Psalm 45

 Key Verse: Verse 8 - "All thy garments smell of
myrrh, and aloes, and cassia, out of the ivory
palaces, whereby they have made thee glad."
Key Words: and cassia

The cassia tree grows ten to fifteen meters tall. It has

grayish bark and elongated leaves that are ten to fifteen
centimeters long and reddish in color. Cassia is a close
relative to the cinnamon. Did you know that most of the spice
sold as cinnamon in the United States and Canada is actually
cassia?
Cassia is mentioned in the Bible on three occasions.
While it is a tree or plant that grows in the Mediterranean
region, it is primarily grown and harvested today in China and
Viet Nam. The cassia tree is associated with a sweet smell and
is symbolic of righteousness (Psalm 45:7).
The other day I jumped in my car and was heading to
make a visit at the hospital. As I sat down in the car seat, I
thought I smelled – well, a not-so-pleasant odor. I looked
around but I could not see anything that would be causing
such a stench. Eventually I became used to the odor, and it
did not bother me anymore until I got out of the car and
walked in the fresh air and went into the hospital. When I
came back and got back in the car, there was again a distinct
odor.
This went on for a couple of days until eventually I
could no longer take it. I began an all-out search for the
culprit causing such a horrendous smell. Finally, I saw it!
There it was – a baby bottle filled with milk (sour, corroded
milk). It looked and smelled as if - well, you get the idea. Not
only did I get rid of the bottle, I put one of those sweet-
smelling car fresheners in my car. You see, it was not enough
to simply put a car freshener in the car; I had to first get rid of
the cause of the odor.
When we get rid of sin and replace it with that sweet
smell of righteousness, our heart can then produce a sweet
smell again. So the next time you think of cassia, think of the
sweet fragrance of righteousness.
.

What to do:
✞Get rid of the sin in your life and replace it with
some cassia, the smell of righteousness.

The Mulberry Tree

May 17

 Bible Reading: II Samuel 5:17-25

 Key Verse: Verse 24 - “And let it be, when thou
hearest the sound of a going in the tops of the
mulberry trees, that then thou shalt bestir thyself: for
then shall the LORD go out before thee, to smite the host of
the Philistines."
Key Words: in the tops of the mulberry trees
In our key verse, we see God advising David – do not
move until you hear from Me; but when you hear the sound in
the mulberry trees, that is your queue to move. So the
mulberry tree is the tree of awareness. David was aware of the
presence of God by the moving of the mulberry trees.
For some, their mulberry tree is a hospital bed; but for
others, it is a revival meeting; still to others this mulberry tree
may be standing in front of a casket. But the mulberry tree is
the tree of being aware of God’s presence.
A number of times in my forty-five years in the
ministry, I have been keenly aware of the presence of God, but
never more so than when we buried my grandson on April 17,
2004. Our family could have never made it through such a
trial if it were not for the presence of God.
One Christmas Eve the telephone rang in the office of
the Pastor of a church in Washington, DC. “Tell me,
Reverend,” the voice inquired, “are you holding a Christmas
Eve service tonight?” When advised that there would
certainly be a service that evening, the caller asked, “And do
you expect President Roosevelt to attend your church
tonight?”
“That,” explained the Pastor patiently, “I cannot
promise. I am not sure about the President’s plans for the
evening. But I can say that we fully expect God to be in our
church tonight, and we feel secure in the knowledge that His
attendance will attract a reasonably large congregation.”
My prayer for you is that you desire the presence of
God in your personal life, in your home, and in your church
more than you desire anything else.

What to do:
✞Remember the mulberry tree and the presence of
God.

The Oak Tree

May 18

 Bible Reading: I Kings 13:1-32

 Key Verse: Verse 14 - " And went after the man of
God, and found him sitting under an oak: and he said
unto him, Art thou the man of God that camest from
Judah? And he said, I am.”
Key Words: and found him sitting under an oak

The oak tree is symbolic of disobedience!!

The Bible declares that the donkey stood right there
with the lion, and the lion did not even try to eat the donkey.
The donkey and the lion stood looking at this dead preacher
that the lion had killed. It was then that the prophet came
and took the old dead preacher and put him on his donkey
and took him back into town and put his body into a strange
tomb.
As you read the story of the young man of God, it
becomes very clear that he disobeyed God (verses 16-17). The
principle is that disobedience will always lead to destruction.
If you will remember, it was Absalom who disobeyed
the command of God to honor his father; and as a result, his
hair was caught in an oak tree, which eventually led to his
death.
The oak tree is symbolic of disobedience!!
In the Houston Zoo in Texas you might find an
unusual phenomenon. Although you pay to see and learn
about animals, the alligator exhibit can tell you much more
about people. In every other cage you do not find a large
display of scattered coins. You see normal habitat, as you
might expect, without a spattering of loose change. So why is
there frequently money in with the alligators? Is it because
there is water, and people seem enamored with throwing
pocket change into water?
There are other exhibits with plenty of water, but they
do not have all the nickels, dimes, and quarters. The reason
for this abundance of money stems from a sign by the
alligators. As you read to learn more about these interesting
creatures, the zoological society presents a reminder not to
throw money into the water, as it only takes one coin, digested
by an alligator, to kill the huge reptile. To the chagrin of the
zoo staff, coins are often thrown all around the alligators.
Whether it is coins in the alligator pit or just one tree in a
garden called Eden, sinful man has a tough time obeying the
rules.

What to do:
✞When you think of the oak tree, remember the
importance of obedience to God.

The Juniper Tree

May 19

 Bible Reading: I Kings 19:1-8

 Key Verse: Verse 4 - “But he himself went a day’s
journey into the wilderness, and came and sat down
under a juniper tree: and he requested for himself
that he might die; and said, It is enough; now, O
LORD, take away my life; for I am not better than
my fathers."
Key Words: and came and sat down under a
juniper tree

The juniper tree is the tree of despair.

Have you been under the juniper tree of despair? I am
sure the answer for each of us is a resounding yes! The
problem is not when we sit under the juniper tree of despair.
The problem is when we pitch our tent there. Despair is the
product of focusing on our self rather than on God and others.
We need to be optimistic about our situation rather
than be pessimistic. A pessimist finds a problem in every
opportunity while an optimist finds an opportunity in every
problem.
During his days as President, Thomas Jefferson and a
group of companions were traveling across the country on
horseback. They came to a river that had left its banks
because of a recent downpour. The swollen river had washed
the bridge away. Each rider was forced to ford the river on
horseback, fighting for his life against the rapid currents. The
very real possibility of death threatened the riders, which
caused a traveler who was not part of their group to step aside
and watch. After several had plunged in and made it to the
other side, the stranger asked President Jefferson if he would
ferry him across the river. The President agreed without
hesitation. The man climbed on, and shortly thereafter the
two of them made it safely to the other side.
As the stranger slid off the back of the saddle onto dry
ground, one in the group asked him, “Tell me, why did you
select the President to ask this favor of?”
The man was shocked, admitting he had no idea it was
the President who had helped him. “All I know,” he said, “is
that on some of your faces was written the answer ‘No,’ and on
some of them was the answer ‘Yes.’ His was a ‘Yes’ face.”
So let me challenge you, do not spend your life under
the juniper tree of despair, invest your life in others for God’s
glory.

What to do:
✞Do not camp under the juniper tree of despair.
✞Invest your life in others for God’s glory.
✞Every time you think of a juniper tree, remember
victory not despair.

The Sycomore Tree

May 20

 Bible Reading: Luke 19:1-10

Key Verse: Verse 4 - “And he ran before, and climbed
up into a sycomore tree to see him: for he was to pass
that way."
Key Words: and climbed up into a sycomore tree

The sycomore trees in the Middle East were and are

often planted by the roadside. They are planted there because
they offer shade and protection from the weather to the
traveler.
The trees can grow quite large depending on the soil
and moisture. The wood of the sycomore tree was often used
for fire and carpentry. While it is not as abundant as it was in
Jesus’ day, you can still find many sycomore trees along the
roadside of the Holy Land.
In Zaccheus’ time it was a tree that allowed him to see
Jesus as His Savior. D. M. Stearns was preaching in
Philadelphia. At the close of the service a stranger came up to
him and said, “I do not like the way you spoke about the cross.
I think that instead of emphasizing the death of Christ, it
would be far better to preach Jesus, the teacher and example.”
Stearns replied, “If I presented Christ in that way,
would you be willing to follow Him?”
“I certainly would,” said the stranger without
hesitation.
“All right then,” said the preacher, “let’s take the first
step. He did no sin. Can you claim that for yourself?”
The man looked confused and somewhat surprised.
“Why, no,” he said. “I acknowledge that I do sin.”
Stearns replied, “Then your greatest need is to have a
Savior, not an example!”

What to do:
✞If you have never accepted Jesus as your Savior, do
so today.
✞Every time you read about or hear about the
sycomore tree, praise God for your salvation.
The Willow Tree
May 21

 Bible Reading: Psalm 137

 Key Verse: Verse 2 – "“We hanged our harps upon the
willows in the midst thereof."
Key Words: We hanged our harps upon the
willows

The willow tree represents the tree of lost joy. The

psalmist was talking about Israel. He was talking about the
day they hung their harps in the willow trees and gave up
hope. It would be like a preacher putting his Bible on a shelf
and saying, “I give up!”
Have you ever hung your harp upon the willow tree?
Have you ever said you were not going to sing anymore or
play anymore?
It seems as though the writer of this Psalm is writing
during a time of captivity, the captivity has led them to hang
their harps and lose their joy. But there is no doubt, no
matter what the reason, they have lost the joy of their
salvation.
Where is joy found?
Not in unbelief – Voltaire was an infidel of the most
pronounced type. He wrote: “I wish I had never been born.”
Not in money – Jay Gould, the American millionaire,
had plenty of money. Yet when on his deathbed he said: “I
suppose I am the most miserable devil on earth.”
Certainly joy is not found in infidelity to God! Thomas
Payne cried out during his last moments: “O Lord, help me!
God, help me! Jesus Christ, help me!” Voltaire said, “I am
lost! I am lost! Oh, that I had never been born!” Colonel
Charterius is reported to have said, “I would gladly give
30,000 pounds to have it proven to my satisfaction that there
is no such place as hell.”
Joy is not found in pleasure. Lord Byron, who reveled
in pleasure all his days, wrote on his last birthday: “My days
are in the yellow leaf. The flowers and fruits of life are gone.
The worm, the canker, and grief are mine alone!” He was
twenty-five years old when he wrote that!
J. Wilbur Chapman wrote: “In church last Sunday I
noted a small child who was turning around smiling at
everyone. He was not gurgling, spitting, humming, tearing
the hymnbooks apart, or rummaging through his mother’s
purse. He was just smiling. Suddenly his mother jerked him
around, and in a stage whisper that everyone could hear, said,
‘Stop grinning. You’re in church.’ With that she gave him a
slap on his hindside, and as the tears rolled down his cheeks
she added, ‘That is better,’ and returned to her prayers. If you
cannot grin in church, where can you be happy?”
So the next time you hear of the willow tree, remember
it is the tree of lost joy. That need not be.

What to do:
✞For the believer, sin and joy never run together. Sin
and worldly fun are cohorts, though; and we should
know the difference

The Productive Tree

May 22

 Bible Reading: Psalm 1

 Key Verse: Verse 3 - “And he shall be like a tree
planted by the rivers of water, that bringeth forth his
fruit in his season; his leaf also shall not wither; and
whatsoever he doeth shall prosper."
Key Words: He shall be...planted

From our text we see the psalmist comparing the believer

to a productive, fruitful tree. The psalmist gives us at least
two reasons for the tree’s productivity.
First of all, it is planted! Verse three says, “And he shall
be like a tree planted...”. The idea is well-grounded – a good
root system. If you buy a tree and never plant it, it will never
be fruitful and will eventually die.
Secondly, where you plant the tree is important: verse
three goes on to say, “...by the rivers of water.” Trees planted
by the riverbank have good soil (which is symbolic of the heart
[see Mark 4:20]), and plenty of water (which is symbolic of
the Word of God [see Ephesians 5:26]).
Just as the tree must be planted and have the right
location, good soil, and plenty of water; so must the fruitful
believer.
The psalmist gives us three things that will destroy our
productivity.
First of all, whom you listen to: “Blessed is the man that
walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly.” Be careful to
whom you listen.
Secondly, whom you linger with: “nor sitteth in the seat of
the scornful.” Be careful with whom you run.
Thirdly, what you take heed to: “But his delight is in the
law of the Lord.”
It is easy to tell whom one listens to, the worldly or wise.
It is easy to tell whom one runs with, and it is easy to tell who
spends time in God’s Word. It shows all over them.
I heard of a man who was digging for oil. It seemed that
his well was going to be a dry hole, but he believed that there
was oil at that place. So he kept digging, and the people
thought he was crazy to keep on spending money on that
worthless well. But he said that there was oil in there. He
kept digging and spent all the money he had and borrowed
about all he could get.
Finally he went down until he struck a gusher. He took his
old hat and stuck it under the oil gushing out of the ground,
filled it up, and put it on his head. He ran down the main
street of town. He did not have to say anything. He had oil all
over him, on his face and clothes. Everyone could see that he
had struck oil, for he had it all over him.
Can others easily tell that we have Christ all over us?
The next time you see a tree growing by the water, ask
yourself, “Where am I planted, and what am I producing?”
What to do:
✞Apply the above and ask yourself, “Where am I
planted, and what am I producing?”

The Palm Tree

May 23

 Bible Reading: Revelation 7

 Key Verse: Verse 9 - “After this I beheld, and, lo, a
great multitude, which no man could number, of all
nations, and kindreds, and people, and tongues, stood
before the throne, and before the Lamb, clothed with
white robes, and palms in their hands;”
Key Words: and palms in their hands

The palm tree is a highly useful tree. The tree grows to

a height of about eighty feet. The sap of the palm tree was
used to make sugar. Its fruit was edible and nourishing. The
seeds from its fruit were used to feed the camels. The leaves
were used as a covering for the roofs of houses.
 The palm tree was used to celebrate the Feast of
Tabernacles (Leviticus 23:40).
 The palm tree is symbolic of righteousness (Psalm
92:12).
 The palm tree denotes victory (Revelation 7:9).
It is Revelation, chapter 7, I want us to look at for the
sake of the devotion. The palm tree is symbolic of victory.
Each of us, as a believer, is ultimately victorious over sin
because of Jesus Christ. Please note the following.
Walking through a park, I passed a massive oak tree.
A vine had grown up along its trunk. The vine had started
small – nothing to bother about. But over the years, the vine
had gotten taller. By the time I passed, the entire lower half of
the tree was covered by the vine’s creepers. The mass of tiny
feelers was so thick that the tree looked as though it had
innumerable birds’ nests in it.
Now the tree was in danger. This huge, solid oak was
quite literally being taken over; the life was being squeezed
from it. But the gardeners in that park had seen the danger.
They had taken a saw and severed the trunk of the vine – one
neat cut across the middle. The tangled mass of the vine’s
branches still clung to the oak, but the vine was now dead.
That would gradually become plain as weeks passed and the
creepers began to die and fall away from the tree.
How easy it is for sin, which begins so small and
seemingly insignificant, to grow until it has a strangling grip
on our lives. And yet, Christ’s death has cut the power of sin.
Yes, the “creepers” of sin still cling and have some effect. But
sin’s power is severed by Christ; and gradually, sin’s grip dries
up and falls away.
So the next time you see or hear of the palm tree,
remember your victory through Jesus.

What to do:
✞Remember the palm tree is symbolic of victory,
and victory for us comes through Jesus Christ.

The Cedar Tree

May 24

 Bible Reading: Psalm 104

 Key Verse: Verse 16 – “The trees of the LORD are full
of sap; the cedars of Lebanon, which he hath
planted;”
Key Words: the cedars of Lebanon
There are three things we know in regard to the cedars
of Lebanon.
First, the cedars are quite dense in that region of the
country.
Second, they produce a good fragrance. People in
general love to smell the cedars of Lebanon.
Third, the wood of the cedar was believed to be the
wood used in the purification services.
There is a story that I love to tell in regard to purity.
The story goes something like this.
In the forests of northern Europe and Asia lives a little
animal called the ermine. He is mostly known by his snow-
white fur—and there is nothing more beautiful in the fur
markets of the world. In some countries the state robes of
judges are lined with it, the white being symbolic of purity and
honor. The ermine has a peculiar pride in his white fur coat.
Against all hazards he protects his fur against anything that
would spoil it.
It is said that the fur hunters take cruel advantage of
the ermine’s care to keep his coat clean. They do not set a
snare to catch him at some unwary moment, but instead find
his home, a cleft in the rock or the hollow of a decaying tree,
and daub the entrance and interior with filth. Then their dogs
start the chase. Frightened, the ermine flees toward his home,
his only place of refuge. He finds it daubed with uncleanness,
and he will not spoil his pure white coat. Rather than go into
the unclean place, he faces the yelping dogs and preserves the
purity of his fur at the price of his life. It is better that he be
stained by blood than spoiled by uncleanness.
Purity for the believer is not just important – it is
imperative.

What to do:
✞Keep yourselves pure from all the impurities in
this world.
✞When you see or hear of the cedar tree,
remember the importance of purity.
The Chestnut Tree
May 25

 Bible Reading: Genesis 30:25-43

 Key Verse: Verse 37 - “And Jacob took him rods of
green poplar, and of the hazel and chestnut tree; and
pilled white strakes in them, and made the white
appear which was in the rods.”
Key Words: chestnut tree

The chestnut tree is a tree of imposing appearance,

often reaching to heights of over one hundred feet. Its
diameter can reach six to ten feet at the base.
If you scratch the bark of the chestnut tree, it
automatically turns white, which is symbolic of cleanliness.
The wood from the chestnut tree was used to make drinking
troughs.
Cleanliness is important in the life of the believer.
Did you know that scientists have discovered that
every snowflake has a tiny piece of dust at its core? Yes, every
snowflake has a dirty heart. In the spiritual realm, the blood
of Christ is applied to the heart of an unbeliever and it
cleanses him from all sin. Not a speck of defilement remains,
for God removes every stain and washes each believer whiter
than snow.
Did you know that in 1842, the first bathtub was
denounced as a “luxurious and democratic vanity?” Boston
made it unlawful to bathe, except on a doctor’s prescription.
In 1843, Philadelphia made bathing illegal between the dates
of November 1st and March 15th (cold winter months).
How tragic that many Christians have adopted a
similar schedule for their spiritual cleansing! It seems as
though many would rather have the stench of the world for a
season than the sweet-smelling fragrance of cleanliness.
What to do:
✞When you see or hear of the chestnut tree,
remember the importance of being clean
spiritually.

The Cockle
May 26

 Bible Reading: Job 31

 Key Verse: Verse 40 - “Let thistles grow instead of
wheat, and cockle instead of barley. The words of Job
are ended.”
Key Words: cockle
You may not have heard of the cockle. It is only
mentioned once in the Word of God. It is not a very large
plant; it only grows to approximately eighteen inches high.
The cockle is also known as the stench plant. When
the cockle is crushed, it puts off a rank odor. It taints the milk
and the meat of grazing animals.
The cockle is a lot like bitterness. It causes a big stink
and defiles many.
One of the most powerful pictures of the embittered
heart is seen in Herman Melville’s character, Captain Ahab, in
Moby Dick. In a violent confrontation at sea, the great white
whale dubbed Moby Dick had sliced off Ahab’s leg. Ahab had
been carried to his bunk in the bowels of the ship; and there
he lay, clinging to life, leg absent, during the return voyage.
“…for long months of days and weeks, Ahab and
anguish lay stretched together in one hammock, rounding in
mid winter that dreary, howling Patagonian Cape; then it was
that his torn body and gashed soul bled into one another; and
so interfusing, made him mad.”
Ahab was eventually fitted with a peg leg, but there
was no prosthesis for the soul. Obsessed with hate, Ahab set
his face to search out and destroy Moby Dick, whatever the
cost. He fitted a ship, hired a crew, and mounted a voyage of
vengeance, which led to his death, the destruction of his ship
the “Pequod,” and the loss of all his men except Ishmael, who
lived to tell the tale.
Do not let bitterness destroy you; and do not be like
the cockle plant, causing a stink wherever you go.

What to do:
✞Ask God to keep you from becoming bitter. The only
alternative is to stink up the place when you are.

The Flowers
May 27

 Bible Reading: I Peter 1

 Key Verse: Verse 24 “For all flesh is as grass, and all
the glory of man as the flower of grass. The grass
withereth, and the flower thereof falleth away:”
Key Words: and the flower thereof falleth away

The Middle East has a number of flowers, some of

which are the anemone; it is a perennial plant growing mostly
by the sea and waterways. They also have in abundance
poppies and tulips, just to name a few. But no matter what
the flowers may be, it is inevitable that the flowers will
eventually fade away.
So it is in our lives, we only have a short time to be
productive and then we “fade away.” So what we do with our
time of “blooming” is important.
When Mickey Mantle was sixty-one, he was
approached by an autograph-seeking middle-aged man and
his little boy. The man had tears in his eyes when he said,
“Son, it took me thirty years to get here to shake this man’s
hand. This is the greatest baseball player who ever lived.”
The little boy looked at Mantle then turned back to his
dad and said, “Daddy, that is an old man.”
The heroes of yesterday have aged, and their mortality
reminds us that age and change occur more rapidly than we
think or desire. You have only a short period of time to
“bloom,” so use your time wisely

What to do:
✞When you see, hear, or even smell a flower,
remember our time is short, so use your time
wisely.

The Hedge
May 28

 Bible Reading: Ezekiel 22:23-31

 Key Verse: Verse 30 - “And I sought for a man among
them, that should make up the hedge, and stand in
the gap before me for the land, that I should not
destroy it: but I found none.”
Key Words: that should make up the hedge

A hedge in Bible lands was and is used as a wall of

separation. The hedge separates orchards and gardens, and is
used as a wall of protection. From our text it is obvious that
God was looking for a man to fill the gap, stand up for
righteousness; but not a single man could be found.
I believe the principle is clear. Not only are the
Marines looking for a few good men, so is God—men of
righteousness who will separate themselves from the world
and stand up for righteousness. The opportunity for us to
mentor those young men is great. We should very well take
advantage of this opportunity.
The Olympic games seem reserved for youth. And
even then, “youth” is defined as “under 25.” When youthful
Melvin Stewart, 23, won the Gold Medal in the men’s 200-
meter butterfly he shared some keen insight on age. In 1988,
Stewart finished a disappointing fifth at the games in Seoul.
His family was there with a gentleman named George Baxter.
Mr. B, as Stewart calls him, paid for his boarding school when
he flunked out of school. “He gave me a chance to turn things
around. I owe my education to him. He was, and is, my
mentor.” Stewart continued, “That day in Seoul, Mr. B took
me aside and said, ‘This is a blessing in disguise. Use this to
fuel the fire toward the next Olympics.’”
After emerging victorious in Barcelona, Melvin
Stewart threw his victory flowers to Mr. B and, “I told him, ‘I
love you.’ I am going to give him my gold medal, too. Mr. B is
seventy-six years old and I do not do many things without
talking to him first. He’s incredible! And he’s been married
to the same woman for fifty-three years. It is too bad, but
older people are a great resource that too many young people
do not rely on today.” Melvin Stewart appears to be a gold
medalist outside of the pool as well.
Are you allowing God to use you to stand in the gap
and impact others for God’s glory?

What to do:
✞The next time you see or hear of a hedge,
remember God is looking for you to stand in the
gap for His glory.

Ash Tree
May 29

 Bible Reading: Isaiah 44:1-20

 Key Verse: Verse 14 - “He heweth him down cedars,
and taketh the cypress and the oak, which he
strengtheneth for himself among the trees of the
forest: he planteth an ash, and the rain doth nourish
it.”
Key Words: he planteth an ash
Most scholars agree that the ash tree is in the family of
pine trees. I find it interesting that the carpenter took the
cypress and oak trees for building and replaced it with a pine
tree, not as strong or as protective as either the cypress or the
oak – in other words, a cheap replacement. Like I said, I find
it interesting that the pine tree replaced the cypress and the
oak until you find in verse seventeen that those who cut down
the cypress and oak were using the wood to build false gods.
As you read the text, it is easy to see that these are cheap,
deceitful, wicked people.
Now you cannot make God, God made you. How can you
worship something that you make? How powerful, protective,
or productive can a god be that we have to make with our
hands?
I read the following excerpts (using old product slogans)
from what some children said that God is like.

GOD is like Coke...He’s the real thing.

GOD is like Pan Am...He makes the going great.
GOD is like General Electric...He lights your path.
GOD is like Bayer Aspirin...He works wonders.
GOD is like Hallmark Cards...He cares enough to send
the very best.
GOD is like Tide...He gets the stains out that others
leave behind.
GOD is like VO5 Hair Spray...He holds through all
kinds of weather.
GOD is like Dial Soap...Aren’t you glad you know Him?
Don’t you wish everyone did?
GOD is like Sears...He has everything.
GOD is like Alka Seltzer...Try Him, you will like Him.
GOD is like Scotch Tape...You cannot see Him, but you
know He’s there.
Now, let me ask you...what is God like to you?
What to do:
✞Next time you see or hear of the pine tree,
remember that there is no replacement for the true
and living God.

The Rose
May 30

 Bible Reading: Song of Solomon 2

 Key Verse: Verse 1 - “I am the rose of Sharon, and the
lily of the valleys.”
Key Words: Rose of Sharon

Did you know that there are seven types of roses that grow
in the region of the Holy Land? But none are more popular
than the Rose of Sharon. Sharon is a region of the country
that goes from Joppa to Mount Carmel. It is known as “The
Beautiful Region” for many reasons, but one of the reasons is
the Rose of Sharon.
It is symbolic of peace and tranquility. The world is
looking for and longing for peace, but the peace this world has
to offer is evasive. It reminds me of the following.
A retired couple was alarmed by the threat of war and
nuclear weapons so they undertook a serious study of all the
inhabited places on the globe. Their goal was to determine
the place in the world least likely to suffer the ravages of war
or nuclear destruction. Their goal was to find a place of
ultimate security. So this couple studied and traveled,
traveled and studied. Finally, they found the place. They
made their plans. They sold their home. They packed their
possessions. And they moved. Christmas of 1981 they sent
their pastor a card from their new home. Three months later
the pastor was praying for their safety. You see, their new
home, the Falkland Islands, was invaded by Argentine troops
on April 2, 1982.
Now you can try as you want and try as you will, but the
only way you will have peace is the inner peace that comes
through knowing Jesus Christ as your personal Savior. So the
next time you see a rose, remember peace – the peace only
God can give.

What to do:
✞When you see or hear of a rose, remember inner
peace. The inner peace that comes only from God.

The Camphire
May 31

 Bible Reading: Song of Solomon 1

 Key Verse: Verse 14 – “My beloved is unto me as a
cluster of camphire in the vineyards of Engedi."
Key Words: the cluster of the camphire

It is also known as the henna plant. The henna plant is

native to northern Africa, western and southern Asia, and
northern Australia, in semi-arid zones and tropical areas, it
produces the most dye when grown in temperatures between
35 and 45 °C (95 and 113 °F). During the onset of
precipitation intervals, the plant grows rapidly, putting out
new shoots. Growth subsequently slows, the leaves gradually
yellow and fall during prolonged dry or cool intervals. It does
not thrive where minimum temperatures are below 11 °C
(52 °F). Temperatures below 5 °C (41 °F) will kill the henna
plant.
Isn't it interesting that the camphire doesn't thrive
during the dry and/or cool season? Nor do we thrive during
times of dry and cool spiritual times.
Take David, for example. During the times David was
close to God he lived victoriously and conquered bears, lions,
and giants. But during the dry and cool spiritual times in
David's life, he complained and felt overwhelmed by the trials
of life.
It is important that the dry and cool times of our
spiritual walk be severed or they will grow and become a
famine and a freeze to us spiritually.
The man huddled on the cabin floor was slowly
freezing to death. It was high in the Rockies in southwestern
Alberta, and outside a blizzard raged. John Elliott had logged
miles that day through the deep snows of the mountain
passes. As he checked for avalanches and as dusk and
exhaustion overcame him he had decided to “hole-up.” He
made it wearily to his cabin but somewhat dazed with fatigue,
he did not light a fire or remove his wet clothing.
As the blizzard blasted through the cracks in the old
cabin walls, the sleeping forest ranger sank into oblivion,
paralyzed by the pleasure of the storm’s icy caress. Suddenly,
however, his dog sprang into action, and with unrelenting
whines, finally managed to rouse his near-comatose friend.
The dog was John’s constant companion, a St. Bernard, one of
a long line of dogs famous for their heroics in times of crisis.
“If that dog hadn’t been with me, I’d be dead today,” John
Elliott says. “When you’re freezing to death you actually feel
warm all over, and don’t wake up because it feels too good.
This moving story illustrates the spiritual condition of
many people today. They are cold spiritually, and sadly are
oblivious of their true condition. Thank God for all the ways in
which He arouses such sleepers. He sends His messengers to
nudge them awake. Sometimes the methods used to awaken
them are drastic, but always for their good. Let us not imagine
that because He shakes us, He therefore hates us. He awakens
us from lethargy because He loves us, and wants to save us
from an eternal death. When we were “ready to perish”
(Isaiah 27:13), He was “ready to save” (Isaiah 38:20). Trust
your life in His hand.

What to do:
✞To have a close relationship with God is not just a
need for us, but a necessity!
