TrafiCam x-stream features

TrafiCam x-stream is an integrated camera and detector offering vehicle presence detection and traffic data collection.

TrafiCam x-stream provides:

• functional detection and monitoring of moving and stationary vehicles at signalized intersections
• traffic data collection (such as volume, speed, classification etc.), traffic flow monitoring and queue detection on
highways and interurban roads, both for temporary or permanent applications.
• streaming video that works with ONVIF Profile S.

TrafiCam x-stream is easy to install and mount on existing or new infrastructure. TrafiCam x-stream can be configured
quickly and easily using Traficon Configuration Tool. This PC tool provides a camera image for accurate positioning of
multiple presence detection and data collection zones. TI x-stream sends the presence detection information to the
traffic light controller and the collected traffic data is transferred over the network to the control center.

TrafiCam x-stream is an IP-addressable device including MPEG-4 image compression. To view and verify the
detection, dual video streams with H264 support are available over the network via TI x-stream and can also be
viewed via a web server.

Architecture of a TrafiCam x-stream system

The TrafiCam x-stream devices are mounted on a pole in an overhead or side-fired position towards the road (for
presence detection) or upcoming traffic (for traffic data collection). TI x-stream is placed in the controller cabinet and
serves as the interface between up to 8 TrafiCam x-stream devices and the traffic light controller.

The PC is connected to the TrafiCam x-stream devices via TI x-stream. This connection, on site or remote, allows you
to set up the system or view streaming video from the TrafiCam x-stream.
Optionally, you can use a TI xp expansion board. It provides up to 32 extra outputs to the system (16 outputs per
board, maximum 2 boards).

Selecting the right lens

2 types of TrafiCam x-stream devices are available:

• Wide angle lens

For vehicle presence detection in the area close to the camera: detection of vehicles at the stop bar
• Narrow angle lens
For vehicle presence detection in the area more distant from the camera: advance detection of vehicles
approaching the intersection

Note: If traffic data collection is your primary goal, use a wide angle lens.

Focal Angle of view Detection

Type Example of the camera image
distance Vertical Horizontal distance
Wide angle 2,1 mm 83° 99° 0-25 m 
(10-7000) (0-85 ft)

Narrow angle 6,0 mm 24° 32° 15-75 m 

(10-7001) (50-245 ft)

TrafiCam x-stream lens specifications

Defining installation height, position and orientation

The height and position of the camera are important factors for minimizing occlusion. Occlusion occurs when a vehicle
blocks part of the camera’s field of view. Please contact FLIR Intelligent Transportation Systems for more information
on how to minimise or avoid occlusion.

Keep the following in mind when installing the TrafiCam x-stream:

• Installation height - For presence detection, the installation height depends on the number of lanes
to monitor and the position of the TrafiCam x-stream towards the road - see
table below.
- For traffic data collection, mount the camera as high as possible. 
The minimum installation height is 6 m / 20 ft.
• Position towards the road Put the camera in overhead position if possible. 
If not, choose a side-fired position next to the fastest lane.

10
TrafiCam x-stream installation
> Relation between detection area, lens type, installation height, and

• Device orientation Do not point the camera at the horizon. Place the camera in a position that will
have minimum exposure to direct sunlight.
- For presence detection, make sure you can define the presence detection
zones in the central part of the camera image.
- For traffic data collection, turn the device towards upcoming traffic.

Depending on the number of lanes to monitor and the position of TrafiCam x-stream, we recommend the following
installation height:

Lanes to monitor Side-fired Overhead Installation height (to avoid occlusion)

1 x  3,5 m / 11,5 ft
1 x  5 m / 16,4 ft
2 x  8 m / 26,2 ft
2 x  5 m / 16,4 ft
3 x  12 m / 39,4 ft
3 x  7 m / 23,0 ft
4 x  12 m / 39,4 ft (To minimise occlusion)
4 x  8 m / 26,2 ft

Installation height in function of the number of lanes to monitor and the position of TrafiCam x-stream

Relation between detection area, lens type, installation height, and

position
The detection area and the minimum and maximum detection distance are related to the installation height and the
lens type of the device and its position towards the road. Position the presence detection zones within the detection
area.

A = Detection area

B = Minimum detection distance

C = Maximum detection distance

Assigning the detection and traffic flow monitoring outputs

About the outputs

Traficam x-stream sends presence detection and traffic flow monitoring events (Levels Of Service) via the detection
outputs.

The number of available detection outputs depends on the system architecture (see Architecture of a TrafiCam
x-stream system on page 3).

The Outputs tab displays all presence detection zones and traffic flow monitoring events and their output assignment.

TrafiCam x-stream allows you to configure up to 24 outputs, i.e. 4 via TI x-stream EDGE and 4 outputs per .

For more information about the communication protocol, see the Public API manual.

Normal status of the detection outputs

Presence detection and traffic flow monitoring events are sent to the traffic controller via the interface. By default, the
assigned outputs will close on presence detection/traffic flow monitoring event. Unassigned outputs are open. You can
change the default settings for both assigned and unassigned outputs.

About the logical relation

Logical relations only apply to the presence detection outputs.

When multiple presence detection zones are assigned to the same output, a logical relation (Boolean logic) applies:
• OR (default): presence detection on one of the zones assigned to the output will change the status of the
output.
• AND: presence detection on all zones assigned to the output is required before the output changes status.

37

38
TrafiCam x-stream system setup
> Setting up presence detection

Setting up presence detection

About the presence detection zones

Presence detection works with presence detection zones.

You can define up to 24 presence detection zones. Each zone has the following characteristics, as illustrated in the
image below:
• Zone ID, which is automatically assigned by Traficon Configuration Tool.
• 4 zone points and a direction point.
• Output, which is automatically assigned by Traficon Configuration Tool.
Multiple presence detection zones can be assigned to one output.

A zone can have 3 modes or functions, defined by the zone type:

• Presence: presence detection of moving and stopped vehicles (= default)
• Stop: detection of stopped vehicles only
• Loop: vehicle counting

Presence detection zones are blue by default, but you can change the display color in the system preferences. For
more information, see To change the display colours on page 26.

Depending on the mode, the presence zone will look differently..

Default zone with mode presence (left), stop (middle) and loop (right)

Once you have defined a presence detection zone, you can copy it with all its zone-specific parameters included.

39
TrafiCam x-stream system setup
> Guidelines for defining the presence detection zones

Guidelines for defining the presence detection zones

Always make sure that there is no horizon in the image!

SIZE AND POSITION OF THE ZONE

The zone should have the length and width of a regular

vehicle.

For detection at the stop bar, place the zone so that the
vehicle will stop in the middle of the zone. Take into account
that vehicles may stop well in front of or over the stop bar.

OVERLAPPING ZONES

To optimise detection, use two overlapping zones and

assign them to the same output.

Overlapping zones minimize the chance that a vehicle stops

in front or behind a zone.

DETECTION AT NIGHT

At night, vehicles are detected by their headlights. Therefore,

the detection zones should cover the headlights in every
situation.

DIRECTION SENSITIVITY

Make a zone direction sensitive in situations where vehicles

in the opposite direction may cause unwanted detection.
Always set the direction of the zone according to the normal
direction of traffic.

40

> To define the presence detection zones

To define the presence detection zones

1 To activate presence detection, in the Functionalities tab, double-click Presence.
A presence detection zone appears.
2 Position the zone by dragging it.
3 To rotate the zone, use its rotation point.
4 Size the zone to the length and the width of a regular vehicle by dragging the zone points.
5 To set the direction of the zone, click the zone direction point.

6 To add another zone:

a) Right-click anywhere in the camera image.

3 In the toolbar, click the Send configuration button.

41
TrafiCam x-stream system setup
> To adapt the presence detection zone for vehicle counting

To adapt the presence detection zone for vehicle counting

TrafiCam x-stream has a vehicle counting function based on pulses that are sent to the controller:
• the number of pulses corresponds to the number of vehicles
• the length of the pulse indicates the zone occupancy

FLIR Intelligent Transportation Systems advises to use the vehicle counting function only when the sensor is mounted
in a rather vertical position with presence detection in the area close to the camera.

A vehicle counting zone functions independently from a presence detection zone. You can place a vehicle counting
zone over a presence detection zone. A vehicle counting zone should always have a direction, otherwise you will not
be able to send the configuration to the device.

To adapt the presence detection zone for vehicle counting

1 Define the presence detection zones and make them direction sensitive.
See To define the presence detection zones on page 41.
2 In the camera image, select the zone.

During calibration, a calibration zone is defined to establish ground distances relative to the camera’s field of view.

1 In the General tab, double-click Calibration.

The Calibration tab opens and the default calibration zone appears on the camera image.

Illustration of a default calibration zone

2 In the Zone editing tab, drag the zone points to define the calibration zone.
Mind the following:
• Draw the calibration zone as a quadrangle with vertical sides that correspond to parallel lines on the road
surface. Use lane markers as a reference.
• To set the length of the calibration zone, work from known distances e.g. the lane width or the distance between
lane or other road markers. Objects on the road surface may serve as reference points as well. 
Alternatively, create reference points on the road surface and measure the distance between these points.
• FLIR Intelligent Transportation Systems advises a minimum zone length of 15 m / 50 ft. A larger calibration
zone will result in a more accurate calibration

Setting up flow monitoring

About flow monitoring

TrafiCam x-stream distinguishes between 5 levels of service that are defined by the flow speed and zone occupancy.
The zone occupancy alarm level and the thresholds for dense, delayed and congested traffic are set by default, but
you can change these settings per data zone.

When realistic flow speed values cannot be obtained because there is not enough traffic, TrafiCam x-stream provides
a default flow speed. See To change the default settings for flow monitoring on page 52.

TrafiCam x-stream generates an event for the levels of service 1 to 4. Flow monitoring events have an event activation
and deactivation time to avoid fluctuation between levels of service when traffic is stabilising again. You can configure
the event (de)activation time per data zone.

The event activation time is the time between detection of a changed level of service and activation of the event
(default = 10 s). The deactivation time is the time that the level of service has returned to the previous level before
deactivation of the event (default = 60 s).

> Setting the detection suppression function

Setting the detection suppression function

About detection suppression

Detection suppression avoids vehicle presence detection caused by wrong-way drivers or sideway traffic, small
objects, camera movement, tree shadows or headlight reflection.

Type of suppression Why By default

Inverse direction Sideway or wrong-way traffic should not be detected. Vehicles Activated
however that stop beyond the stop bar and drive backwards are not
wrong-way drivers. These vehicles should be detected. Therefore
inverse direction suppression is limited in time.
Camera movement Vehicle presence detection should not be affected when TrafiCam Deactivated
x-stream is mounted on a pole that may be swinging because of the
wind.
Tree shadow Continuously moving shadows in the camera image caused by trees Deactivated
should not activate presence detection.
Small objects Objects that are smaller than 1/3 of the vehicle presence detection Deactivated
zone (e.g; pedestrians, bicycles, motorcycles) should not be
detected.
Reflection When TrafiCam x-stream is mounted in an overhead position, Deactivated
advance presence detection on upcoming traffic should not result in
unwanted presence detection caused by the reflection of headlights.
Headlight reflection suppression is limited in time.
