§110.13. English Language Arts and Reading, Grade 2,

B Knowledge and Skills

(6) Reading/Comprehension of Literary Text/Theme and Genre. Students analyze, make

inferences and draw conclusions about theme and genre in different cultural, historical, and

contemporary contexts and provide evidence from the text to support their understanding.

Students are expected to:

(B) Compare different versions of the same story in traditional and contemporary folktales with

respect to their characters, settings, and plot.

Learning Outcomes: The students will learn to identify and compare characters, settings, and

plots of comparable folktales. The activities are intended to present two similar folktales (both

traditional and contemporary) and help students to focus on the similarities and differences of

the characters, settings, and plot. The group activity is set up to help students locate details
they may have missed that other students identified. Group discussion will activate prior

knowledge obtained from previous school years according to the TEKS. Prior knowledge of the

traditional folktale, The Three Little Pigs is expected in the TEK 110.2 8A demonstrate

knowledge of distinguishing characteristics of well-known children's literature such as folktales,

fables, fairy tales, and nursery rhymes; was taught in kindergarten and first grade. Also prior

knowledge of characters, settings, and plots was taught according to Kinder TEKs 110.2 7A, 7B,

7D and First Grade TEKs 110.28B, 8C, 8D.

Pre-Activity: Quickly do a five-minute flannel board storytelling of the traditional Three Little

Pigs. Ask students to raise their hand if they remember this traditional folktale and share.

Activity: I will tell the story of Three Little Pigs with a flannel board. Then I will ask students to

raise their hands if they remember this traditional fairytale. Then students will be asked to pay

attention to the Susan Lowell book The Three Little Javelinas.

· Whole Group Activity - Instruction students to look for similarities and differences or

compare/contrast the elements of characters, settings, and plot. The students will listen

attentively while I will read the engaging picture book, The Three Little Javelinas.

· Small Group Activity - Students will break into groups of four and discuss the two

folktales, identifying the characters, settings, and plot. The groups will have giant paper with

three sections for students to put ideas under the three topic: characters, settings, and plot.

· Individual Activity/Assessment - Then each student will begin to write their own

compare/contrast paper on the two folktales.

Modification of the Lesson: If time is limited, the teacher can have a teacher led whole group

discussion. Students will use Plickers to answer questions to demonstrate mastery of content for

the writing assessment comparing and contrasting the traditional and contemporary folktales.

Alternatively, if there is a larger amount of time, students can create a storyboard representing

elements from their chosen version.
