PNSS Green Isotonic

Plain LRS Blue Isotonic
D5LRS Pink Hypertonic
D5Water Red Isotonic
D10Water Blue green Hypertonic
D5 0.3 NaCl Sky blue Hypertonic

D5W (D5Water) NaCL .9%

Plain Ringer’s Lactate Saline Solution

Three types of I.V. fluids:

a. Isotonic solution - it has the same concentration as the body fluid.

• D5W
• NaCl 0.9%
• Plain Ringer's lactate
• Plain normosol M

b. Hypotonic - has lower concentration than the body fluids. Too much of this
fluid can swell the body's cell.

• NaCl 0.3%

c. Hypertonic - has higher concentration than the body fluids. Too much of this
fluid can make the body's cell shrink.

• D10W
• D50W
• D5LR
• D5Non

Isotonic Fluid
Cell volume remains the same
moves equally
between
compartments

Fluid is moving equally into and out of the

compartments
Hypotonic

Fluid moves
into the cells Fluid moves into RBC causing cell
rupture (hemolysis)

Fluid moves from the vascular space into the cells.

The major problems with administering hypotonic IV
solutions is the hemolyis and swelling of the cells in the
brain that occurs

Hypertonic

Fluid is
pulled out of
the cells
Fluid moves out of the cell causing
crenation (shrinking) of the RBC

Fluid is pulled out of the cells and into the vascular

system, so increases intravascular volume.
INTRAVENOUS DRIPS

1. Macro driplets –without needle

2. Micro driplets- with needle

3. Blood set- has filter to prevent clots from entering circulation

IV CANNULA

• The smaller the gauge the greater the diameter 14g>24g

• Use the smallest cannula with shortest needle that will accommodate the
prescribed therapy

• Avoid areas crossing joint

• Start distal and work your way up.
