Executive summary:

As an assignment for my English 219 class, we are to choose a campus office,

organization, administration, or etc. Then offer some thoughts and recommendations that we
think would help students navigate, understand, and get more information from these
organizations. We had to collect data for a previous project and include it into this one and from
the data that was collected I could see that the UNM police department could use some help with
getting information to students. It seemed that not enough students knew enough emergency and
safety information which seems like a major issue. The assignment helped myself and my group
plan, research, and create a document as a team not to mention we were able to gain foundational
knowledge of the organization of the information we had and how to properly place it all so the
presentation could run as smoothly as possible.

Introduction:
Using data from a previous project we were given a task to pick a problem that we
believe is an issue on campus, as you will see my groups campus issue was on campus safety. I
decided the organization to go with was the UNM police department, I first went to the website
and saw that it was well put together, with more than enough information available to students.
But why are student not familiar with any of it still? I believe students just do not have enough
time to go to the website or it does not even cross their mind as they go about their day. I believe
there are a few ways to reach out to students and being able to give them important information
about the campus police more effectively. Also some recommendations on getting information to
students in emergency situations not to mention what to do in these situations as well.

Methods:
In the previous assignment we asked other university students a series of questions (the
questions bellow) all related to campus safety and their thoughts on the matter. We had three
members in our group each member asked six different people these questions and recorded
them anonymously. We conducted this survey randomly so we got a wide variety of students but
we kept the students information anonymous.

Analysis of Findings:
1. On a scale of 1 to 5 how safe do you feel on campus?
2. On a scale of 1 to 5, 1 being the lowest how familiar are you with the procedures in case
of an emergency?
3. On a scale of 1 to 5, 1 being the lowest, the middle being unsure how high do you think
the crime rate is around campus?
4. Do you think there is a better way to get lobo alerts in case classes have a “no
technology” policy?
5. Do you know where the campus police building is?
6. How do you think safety can be improved on campus?

Question 1: On a scale of 1 to 5 how safe do you feel on campus?

1: 0
2: 1
3: 9
4: 8
5: 0

This data shows that the students felt relatively safe on campus.

Question 2: On a scale of 1 to 5, 1 being the lowest how familiar are you with the procedures in
case of an emergency?

1: 7
2: 9
3: 1
4: 0
5: 1

Here we are shown how little students know the emergency drills and procedures we have here
on campus.

Question 3: On a scale of 1 to 5, 1 being the lowest, the middle being unsure how high do you
think the crime rate is around campus?
1: 0
2: 2
3: 6
4: 10
5: 0

Students actually think the crime rate on campus is fairly high.

Question 4: Do you think there is a better way to get lobo alerts in case classes have a “no
technology” policy?
6 Automated text
4 Intercom systems
4 Professors notification
1 No "no tech" policy
2 Training on procedures

Question 5: Do you know where the campus police building is?

Yes 44%, No 56%
Question 6: How do you think safety can be improved on campus?
3 Already safe
5 More police presence
2 Don't have an open campus
2 More enforcements of violations
5 Security cameras
1 Not sure

Recommendations:
As a reminder the data that was collected was collected from a small group of 18 out of
the campus as a whole. From the information that my group had collected we can see that quite a
few students, more than half to be exact did not know where the police department building was
located. Even though it was very close to the area we had to meet for orientation. I think during
orientation they should have a little section dedicated to campus safety where the chief of the
campus police comes and speaks to us about all he can about the department also displaying
emergency numbers, emails, and additional information. Another thing that could be included
are emergency procedures, as my group members and I were going around asking these
questions, all but one person had almost no clue what any of these procedures were. I believe
going over each or most of the situations and discussing what you should do for those situations,
or adding the link into the presentation would even do the job. I also believe that including
statistics and crime rates to the presentation, this could do a number of things depending if the
crime rates are high or low. If the rates ae high than it will be likely that they will not be included
because it would look bad on the schools part. Although I do believe that students have the right
to see if the campus is a safe place to be.
We even asked students if they had any opinions on what we should do to increase
student safety on the campus. Our feedback is in the data above and we had two answers that
were tied for the top answer, which were more police/ security presence and more outdoor
security cameras on campus. Which I think are great ideas but I do know it would be expensive
as well for either project so I think for now we have to do the best with what we’ve got.
Conclusion:
In conclusion I believe that the UNM police department does not put their organization
out there enough, students barely know about the website for the police department let alone the
emergency contact information. I believe that having the department give a short presentation at
orientation would be a better opportunity for them to pass important information to students, for
instance the emergency procedures that nobody knows anything about.
