Summary of Background Information; Prior Knowledge Needed
(There is not a lot of background information needed for this as most of it is covered in the
reading that wil be completed during the lesson)
What are the layers of the earth?
The layers of the earth are the crust, mantle, outer core, and inner core.
What is the crust of the earth?
The crust is the outermost layer, yet is the thinnest layer.
What is the mantle of the earth?
The mantle is solid (lower mantle) and liquid (upper mantle). The mantle is composed of rocks and
metals.
What is the core of the earth?

Laura Simmons Grade 2 Layers of the Earth 2/27/18, p. 1

The core of the earth is the inner most layer. It is a huge metal ball. It is solid. It is also the hottest
layer at 5,000-6,000 degrees celcius.

Prior Knowledge Needed by Student to be Success in this Lesson
Students should already be able to…
1. Have a basic understanding of how to create and use a model
Detailed Procedure.
1. Lesson Opening
1. Today, we are going to look at the different layers of the earth.
2. Optional: Read the objectives to the students. At the end of the lesson, should shouls be able
to use information from several sources to provide evidence that Earth events can occur
quickly or slowly as seen through the different layers of earth.
LO #1. Students will be able to correctly identify the different layers of earth by using the
information collected from their models.
2. Engage
1 Today we are going to be exploring earth and its different layers. Who knew that the earth
had layers? Wait for and accept answers. Some may say ‘yes’ others may say ‘no’. Okay,
well if you did know that is good and if you didn’t then today youre going to learn a lot more
about earth then you may have ever thought. Do you think all the layers are the same?
Wait for and accept answers. Some yes and some no. Let’s watch this video and see if you
can find out.
2. Watch Bill Nye Video (watch full video)
https://youtu.be/Q3_sylZBuPY
- How many layers did Bill tell us there are? There are 4
- Did Bill say that all the layers were the same? No, they are all different
- Why are there so many layers? They each have a different purpose
2. Explore:
1. Say to the students, “Let’s explore the different layers of the earth. Let’s begin by looking at this
photo.” Display the photo, Blackline Master # 7. Say to students, “Now I want you all to think-
pair-share with your face partners and tell them what you are observering about the layers.”
Give the students 3-5 minutes to talk to one another. Ask the students, “What are some
observations you made?” Almost all answers will be excepted
3. Explain:
1. Say to the students, “To begin we are gonna do some reading to learn the information we will
need to learn about the layers of earth.”
2. Say to students, “Take out your Our Earth textbooks so we can work together to read, stetch,
and annotate!”
3. Pass out one copy of the Blackline Master #1 to each students. Have the Blackline Master #2 –
the key so that the teacher can be prepared in knowing what needs to be examined further.
4. Have the students look over the objective and the vocabulary page of the text so they will be
prepared to read the next few pages.
5. Say to students, “Okay boys and girls lets start looking the sheet I handed to you. Let’s read
through it and focus on what is important.”
6. Read the first sentence. Say to students, “now lets discuss, What are the four layers” crust,
mantle, outer core, and inner core. Let’s label this globe and in the boxes label the four layers.
Give time and allow them to fill in and make sure they have the right answers.

Laura Simmons Grade 2 Layers of the Earth 2/27/18, p. 2

7. Read the next portion – Crust. Ask the students, “What parts do you think are important parts?”
Let’s underline them. Look at the KEY to ensure they have the highlighted portions underlined
8. Now let’s do a little stetch! Look at the KEY to see what the sketch generally needs to include.
9. Complete steps 7 and 8 again for each portion left on the Blackline #1.
4. Elaborate:
1. Say to students, “Okay boys and girls now we are going to work on our models!”
2. Pass out Blackline master #3 so that each student has one copy.
3. Say to Students, “Without looking at our notes, let’s see if we can fill out our model of the
layers of earth.” Give students 5-8 minutes to fill out the model. Let’s check it.
4. Go part by part with the students asking, “What would go here? How do we know that?”
5. Say to students, “Now lets cut these parts out and glue them into our science notebooks so we
have a reference for the future.” Give 5-8 minutes for students to do this.
Early completers will:
1. Color the layers in their models
5. Assessment/Evaluate:
Evaluation is attached, BL#5.
Lesson Closure
1. Ask students to summarize what they have learned about the Layers of the Earth.
2. Some questions could be:
2.1. What are four main layers of earth? (crust, mantle, outer core, and inner core)
2.2. Which layer is the outermost layer? (Crust)
2.3. How do we know the outermost layer is the crust? (We can walk on it)
2.4. What is the innermost layer? (inner core)
2.5. Are all the layers the same? (No, they each have a distinct job and
characterisitcs)
CITATION OF SOURCES.
All sources cited in background section.
Yes, I cited all materials and resources used in this lesson.

Check for Success:
Yes 1. Does your lesson focus on and achieve the student learning objectives that you list?
Yes 2. Do all of your lesson components align with the Four E Learning Cycle?
Yes 3. Did you attach your rubric evaluation?
Yes 4. Did you attach all of your data sheets, worksheets, PowerPoints?

Layers of the Earth Information Sheet Name: ________________________________

Our planet Earth is sphere-shaped and composed of

four different layers; the crust, the mantle, the outer
core and the inner core.

Crust: The part of Earth that you can see, touch, and
walk on is called the surface or crust. It is the thinnest
of the four layers. The crust is composed of rock and
soil. Decayed plants and leaves are part of the soil. The
crust is divided into huge plates, or pieces like a jigsaw
puzzle, that are always moving. They move just about
as fast as your fingernails grow!

Laura Simmons Grade 2 Layers of the Earth 2/27/18, p. 4

Mantle: Under the crust is a layer called the mantle. It
is composed of rocks and metals. No one has ever gone
down into the mantle, but we have been able to drill
into the top edge of it. Sometimes the hot melted
rocks in the mantle push up through cracks in the
crust. This is called a volcano.

Core: Under the mantle is the core, which is the center

of the earth. The core has two parts; the outer core
and the inner core. The outer core is so hot that the
rocks and minerals that make it up are liquid. The inner
core is extremely hot, but it is solid. No one has ever
been to the core; it is so deep that even our strongest
drills cannot reach it.

ANSWER: I used to think the earth was just a ball. I didn’t know there were layers about
the earth but now I know that the earth has layers.
The student may also choose to talk about the different layers (crust, mantle, outer core,
inner core).
