Lesson Plan and Reflection

By: Taylor Fitzgerald

Title of the Lesson: Dear Dragon- Although we may look different, we can still be friends.
Grade Level(s): Kindergarten
Number of Students: 18

Objective(s): While reading the book, Dear Dragon, the students will be able to understand how
print is organized and demonstrate comprehension of fictional texts. A variety of questions will
be asked throughout the read aloud to make the reading more interactive with the students and
also for the students to gain greater knowledge about the book. This book also provides a great
lesson on how we may look different, we can still be friends. This will promote class discussion
on why we should treat everyone with kindness and respect despite differences.

Materials:
Teacher Materials: Dear Dragon written by Josh Funk and illustrated by Rodolfo Montalvo

Procedures:
1. Opener- The Read aloud will begin by having a discussion on what the word prediction
means. Using the knowledge that they learn about predictions, the students will be asked
questions about what they think the book will be about based on the illustrations on the
cover, back, and end-pages of the book. Also we will discuss the concepts of letters and
how letters are addressed. This will help the students when understanding who is writing
the letters in the story.

2. Body- The students will be asked about what a pen-pal is and why the students are
sending letters to other students. Further questions will be asked to promote
understanding of the book. For example, who do you think Blaise Dragonmir thinks
George Slair is? Do you think he knows that George Slair is a human? If so, why do you
think that? Also discussions will be made throughout the story on what they believe will
happen when George Slair and Blaise Dragonmir meet.

3. Closing- After reading the book, Dear Dragon, the students will be asked why they
thought that Blaise Dragonmir and George Slair stayed friends even after they found out
that one friend is a dragon and the other is a human? Do you think it mattered to George
Slair and Blaise Dragonmir that they were different, if so, why? A discussion will open
up based off these questions and why physical differences aren’t important as long as you
are a good friend. The students can then make statements about what it means to be a
good friend to everyone despite differences. This is a great story on how we can be
friends, even if we may look different. We all are special in our own way and we need to
show kindness to all of our friends.
