Name and date: Liz McDonald 11/06

Presenter: Liz McDonald

Lesson title: Matisse Paper Mache

Age range: 3rd grade

Medium: paper mache

A. Description:
We will discuss Matisse’s life and artwork before discussing the shapes that he used and
they shapes we have learned in class (geometric). Then students will create their own Ma-
tisse-like shapes on colored paper. They will then blow up (or I will blow up) their balloon to
an appropriate size (not too big), tie them, and then tape the bottom part to a cup for bal-
ance. Once the students have started to cut out their shapes, they can then start pasting
their shapes with the mod podge and paintbrush to the balloon. The students should cover
their shapes front and back before placing it on the balloon, and the images should have
some overlapping to maintain the round shape of the balloon. Once the balloon has been
covered to the students’ satisfaction, we will leave it to dry for several hours, or overnight.
We will then begin our closing discussion. The next day we will pop the balloon to reveal our
shape.

B. Essential questions

What is Matisse’s style of art?

What are organic shapes?
What are geometric shapes?

C. Instructor objectives (the participant will…):

Students will be able to retell details about Matisse’s life.
Students will be able to understand the meaning of organic shapes.
Students will be able to follow directions to create a paper mache.

-Scissors
-Cups
-Colored paper

H. Activities
- I will show students a slide show with brief information about Matisse’s life and his
paintings.
- We will then discuss the different shapes that Matisse used and we will discuss the dif-
ferences between geometric and organic shapes.
- Then we will draw Matisse-like shapes and cut them out

I. Accommodations:

If the Matisse organic shapes prove to be too difficult to create or cut out, I will have them
cut out geometric shapes, as long as they can identify each of the shapes they create. I can
also blow up and tie the balloons for the students if they are unable.

N. Notes/additional reflections during or after teaching the lesson:

Overall the lesson went very smoothly and I managed to keep my peers engaged for the full 45
minutes. I would change the size of the balloon in the future because my peers had a hard time
cutting enough shaped to cover their balloon, and it was very time consuming. I would also in-
clude some pre-cut shapes for the students in case their hands get too tired. The finished prod-
ucts turned out really well, but they had to dry overnight, but my peers were happy with their
pieces of art.

O. Other comments: e.g. art integration, art history, multicultural, visual culture, ele-
ments/principles, etc.
