Lesson Idea Name: Adding strategies

Content Area: Math
Grade Level(s): 1st Grade
Content Standard Addressed:
MGSE1.NBT.4 Add within 100, including adding a two-digit number and a one-digit number and adding a
two-digit number and a multiple of ten (e.g., 24 + 9, 13 + 10, 27 + 40), using concrete models or drawings and
strategies based on place value, properties of operations, and/or relationship between addition and
subtraction; relate the strategy to a written method and explain the reasoning used.

Technology Standard Addressed:

2 - Digital Citizen
3 - Knowledge Constructor

Describe how you would incorporate an Online Project/Collaboration Site/Publishing Opportunity in your
classroom:
I will begin the lesson by going over the student’s prior knowledge with addition. After a brief
introduction, the students will divide into groups to participate in center activities. One of the centers will be
a cut and paste addition worksheet, one center will be a math game on the iPad, one center will be practicing
addition strategies with me, and the last center will be Ask Dr. Math on the computers. For Ask Dr. Math, the
students will be required to explore the website and find new strategies for addition.
Ask Dr. Math is an older website, so some of the strategies are outdated. The students can find one new
strategy that they learned, and at the end of centers, we can come back as a class and analyze whether the
strategies are effective or not. This will engage the students in participation, as well as open their minds to
effective and ineffective strategies.

What technologies would be required to implement this proposed learning activity in a classroom?
For Ask Dr. Math, computers are required to implement this activity.

Describe how the following features are addressed in this learning experience (note: all of them may not be
addressed in the project, but most should be if you are reaching a high LoTi Level).
a. Collaboration with peers, near-peers, mentors outside their classroom and often beyond their
school: Students collaborate with their classmates in addition to parents if they choose to
share their findings outside of class.

b. Student-centered learning and knowledge creation (creating original data and or producing original
products as a result of engaging in a project): Students are able to alter the methods they use as
needed in order to make it successful for them personally, but it is not necessarily their original
work.

c. Higher-order thinking: Students are using alternative methods of learning addition.

d. Students publishing their original work to others who will use/care about their product: Students
share their work (although it is not original) with the class in order to benefit everyone .

Universal Design for Learning (UDL): For this lesson, students can access Ask Dr. Math from any computer
with internet access. This is beneficial for students who may be absent during the lesson or need the extra
instruction as a review on their own time. In addition, the notes can be printed so that students who are
hands on learners may have it in their notebooks or have it in their hands rather than on screen. For students
who may have vision impairments, the content can be printed out while zoomed in- that way it is easier for
students to see and read.

Lesson idea implementation and Internet Safety Policies: Any work published by students would be
password protected so that only approved people could see it. Students will know what the rules are
surrounding the classroom blog and will be expected to follow them. Teachers will inform parents and
administrators about the protections put in place on their blog, and how these protections comply
with the law and safety of students. All Internet Safety and Acceptable Use policies will be followed.

Reflective Practice: By completing this lesson and activity, the students will gain many insights: first, the Ask
Dr. Math strategy activity will guide their knowledge and extend their learning beyond textbooks. When the
groups of students research theirstrategies, they will gain researching skills as well as how to interpret
readings.
