Lesson Plan for Observations

Essential Question- What are some everyday machines we use and how do they help us?

Learning Goal- How do everyday machines make our lives easier?

Standards-

RST. 6-8-7 Integrate quantitative or technical information expressed in words in a text with a
version of that information expressed visually.

RST. 6-8.4 Determine the meaning of symbols, key terms, and other domain-specific words, and
phrases as they are used in a specific scientific or technical context relevant to grades 6-8 texts
and topics.

Content Knowledge- Use visual and reading skills to comprehend the use of everyday machines
they see in their everyday lives to prepare them for college and career readiness. These
machines will consist of a lever, a pulley, an inclined plane, and a screw.

Discipline-Specific Strategies and Skills - Analyze the disciplinary specific vocabulary words
through video and text to understand the purpose of specific machines and how they are used.

Mini Lesson- After students have grasped the understanding of these disciplinary vocabulary
words and comprehend to use their machines, each group will be given an instruction sheet
and machine to operate. Each group will be given 10 minutes to perform the function of the
machine and then each group will briefly demonstrate how their machine works and what
function it holds.

Teaching Methods- The instructor will give the students brief reading on the new vocabulary
words they are about to learn and have a student read aloud one vocabulary word and its
definition so that more students can get engaged and participate. The students will then watch
a video on how these machines work. The students will then get into groups to perform the
experiment of using these machines. The instructor will go around to each group to help and
make sure they understand the instructions. Before the experiment starts the instructor will
also go over all safety precautions for each group’s machine. After the students are done, they
will present their information so that each peer can learn from one another and the instructor
will record all information.

Assessments-
 Share out: Students will Share Out their responses with the class. The student responses
will be recorded on the SMARTBoard for the instructor to save and use at a later time if
necessary. The instructor will also be keeping account of the student’s use of academic
language and comprehension of disciplinary vocabulary for this lesson.
 Group Work- Students will break into groups to get a better understanding of the topic,
discuss their ideas, and learn from each other and comprehend the perspective their
peers are grasping on the topic.
 Experiment- Students will partake in an experiment to operate the machine to
demonstrate that they know how to use it and to see firsthand how it is used and what
it is used for.
