the Rehabilitation Treatment of a Stroke Patient: A Case Report, Art Therapy, 25:3,

129-133.

Equipment Needed: Pinwheel paper template, colored pencils, scissors, push pin, pencils, hole
puncher.

Activity Description:
1. Print template
2. Color the triangular areas labeled “A”
3. Turn over paper and color the triangular areas labeled “B”
4. Cut template square, then cut along the solid lines making sure to stop short of the center
5. Punch a hole through the black “B” circles and one through the center of the pinwheel
6. Fold in the “B” triangles to match with the center whole
7. Put a push pin in the center whole
8. Take a pencil and push the pin half-way in the eraser

Primary Interaction Patterns: This activity falls under Extraindividual because it is an action
directed by a person toward an object in the environment, requiring no contact with another
person. However, depending on the adaptation, an individual may need help in completing tasks
within this arts and crafts project. In this case, the activity can fall under Intragroup, an action of
a cooperative nature by 2 or more persons intent upon reaching a mutual goal. The patient can be
working with an art therapist on completing a pinwheel.

Adaptation: This activity can be adapted for a person that is recovering from a Stroke, for
example, in a Rehabilitation Facility. Art Therapy treatment shows improved scores in visual
perception and cognition, as well as an increase in motor activity and function as a secondary
effect. The case report above suggests that art therapy may have a positive therapeutic effect on
chronic stroke patients.
