GENDER OF WORDS
In French, nouns are either masculine or feminine. The only way to determine
which gender is which, is by looking at the ‘article’ that goes with the word.
However, sometimes words will be in a plural form ‘les’ (more than one) and they
could be used for either masculine or feminine nouns.
When using adjectives to describe your noun, remember that most adjectives will
come AFTER the word they describe (for example: le chat gris). There are, of
course, some exceptions such as size adjectives, eg. petit, grand which you would
place before the noun (for example: le petit chat gris).
Remember also, that adjectives must agree with the gender of the noun which
they are describing. See the following table for some examples (using clothing):
