Students celebrate, parents proudly watch: their sons and daughters cross the stage to receive the diplomas they long worked for and it is a happy occasion. For now that is. Soon reality sets in and the students realize they are leaving the school and the life they have known for so many years, and now must face the uncertain future without the quidance-of the staff and teachers of their high school careers, Most of the friends known throughout the school career will take different paths in life and the relationships will never be the same. Parents who so proudly watched their children graduate now realize life will never be the same. Some students will be off to college, some in the military, and athers will be joining the werk force. THE MOONLIGHTER 14 Mindclips By Ann Lowdermilk |read in The Upper Room a story by a man who participated in a pilgrimage to the Holy Land. While in the city of Petra, his visitor had the opportunity to walk alongside the guide who was a Bedouin nomad, and as conversation developed, the visitor asked the guide what he used to walk in the desert. The quite answered by hurling a stone several yards: away, Salaam Rp, ee and hurling it again, saying, I walk in the desert from stone to The writer of this account then drew a message about how life tsal{ is lived in stages with all ts dimensions of celebrations and drawbacks and that when we walk by faith in God we wil find it easier to accept the content of these so-called stone throws— those distances that we walk through in life's chapters. Just about the time that | read this, I came down with the flu and felt quite wiped out. it ahvays makes me a lite crazy to do nothing while ading, so this poignant lesson tock on another angie, The thought came ta mind why not thraw a sane’ while you're stuck in slow mode? Now that the flu symptoms ace gone, the game of ‘throwing a stone’ has come along into my regular day. Somehow playing vith that concept makes doing chores a bil more enjoyable, or when out and about, stopping at just one move place to get that certain needed item seems easiet—all litie stone throws. The beautiful lesson the writer in The Upper Room shared is the deeper message yet taking this idea and having fun with it just adds to the story line, Try it! Shameful. in 1830, he signed the indian Removal Act, which gave the federal government the power to-exchange Native-held land in the cotton kingdom east of the Mississippi for land to the west, in the “indian colonization zone” that the U.S. had soquired as part of the Louisiana Purchase. (This “indian territory" was located in present-day Oklahoma ) The law required the government to negotiate removal treaties faitly, voluntarily and peacefull, lt did not permit the president or anyone alse to coerce Native nations into giving up their land, Howewer, President Jackson and his. goverment ignored the letter of the law and forced Native Americans to vacate lands thay had lived on for generations, In the winter of 1831, under threat of invasion by the U.S, Amy, the Choctaw became the first nation to be expelled from its land altogether. They made the journey to Indian leritory on foot (some “bound in chains and masched double fil,” one historian writes) and without any food, supplies or other help from the government. Thousands of people died along the way. It was, one Choctaw leader told an Alabama newspaper, a “trail of tears and death.” Some wonder if Andrew Jackson's picture should really be hanging proudly in the current white house Oval Office. Norton, Rector (continued) Brethren and friends, pray with me for these afflicted hearts — {or all the bereaved family of the deceased. Let not our sympathy be a mere vanishing thing. Let our sorrow and tears ‘still be shared with them, in fulfillment of an Apostle's exhortalion to weep with those thal weep, and of the Savior's own blessed example, who wept with the mourning relatives at the grave of Lazarus, This tribute you will, | am persuaded, willingly yield, And it will ba something of comfort. t will be the source of some consolation to their wounded hearts, ta know that you do this. Let me add, it will be wisdom in us, for ‘ourselves, to cherish these emotions and sympathies. It will be good for our hearts to linger for. season, in that far-off hour of ‘mouming. | dwell on their grief only, for though | am assured a comman and sincere socrow over this crushed Flower of the forest affects all our hearts, ours is as nothing in comparison with their affiction, on whom this calamity has directly fallen. It is, brethren, a time to weep — a time to: moum, yet not so as. without the fight and the hope of our holy faith, The ruling hand of God is in every event of mortal fe. But we do not always 80 fully apprehend this truth, 25 we are allowed, and as it is our wisdom to do. We should rest our thoughts and our faith on those certain truths which His word gives us to know, in connection with the outward and visible circumstance of death, ‘even in its most appalling forms. When the servants of Christ ‘are thus early and suddenly called away, there is this clear voice to surviving relatives and fiends, AAlittie while ago, the heart of the Indian gisl was glad in the thought of an early return to her home: in the woods. And we heard her ‘ell of the joy itis to be at home with Nature in the early spring — when the brooks are murmuring again, and the buds unfold, and the soft winds whisper in the treetops and the early birds retum and all nature is beautiful and smiling beneath the hand of our Father, and seems to be vocal with His praise. That langed-for season ts coming soon...and its life, its beauty, ‘and its melody wil spring anew in the Mohawk woods. The free footsteps of Sa-Sa-Na will nat be roaming there, her joyous ‘voice will no more thrill in the hearts af loving kindred and friends, nor will her warblings echo the-wild bird's song (Cheerless and lonely will be the forest path, silant and sad will be the wigwam at home. So change the scenes of file. Ours is the tribute of mourning ‘and tears, Let us bless the Word that bids us look to the bright unchanging scenes ofthe life above ~~ Final chapter next month, The tragedy of ife is not death but what we let dia inside of
