Verse 1 introduces the chapter and verses 2-9 are the words of | Lemwel's mother, There is debate whether she also spoke the Words of the rest of the chapter, verses 10-31, | believe the whole chapter, from verse 2-31 are the words of Lemuet's mother thal have become for us The Word of God. So, these much discussed wards about what a woman is to be ~ what a mother is 10 be-and to do —are no! the words of a man— of a King —-but, rather, the inspired Words of God in and through a woman to yau and to me — to all of humanity — regardiess of gender. This, then, is what Lemuel's mother taught him in verses: 2.9 about being a good and wise King: Slay single, Stay sober, Speak sound words on behalf of those in need. ‘The rest of the chapter is hae wise insights as to what a woman - a wife and mother - should do-and be...a virtuous woman, a valuable woman, a wifetwomanimother of excellence, ane of moral worth, one of ability and nobility, ‘one who is the ideal of wisdom in action. The opening verses of The Book af Proverbs states the goals of Wisdom and now the Book closes with an application — a case study — of Wisdom. Shameful. in 1830, he signed the indian Removal Act, which gave the federal government the power to-exchange Native-held land in the cotton kingdom east of the Mississippi for land to the west, in the “indian colonization zone” that the U.S. had soquired as part of the Louisiana Purchase. (This “indian territory" was located in present-day Oklahoma ) The law required the government to negotiate removal treaties faitly, voluntarily and peacefull, lt did not permit the president or anyone alse to coerce Native nations into giving up their land, Howewer, President Jackson and his. goverment ignored the letter of the law and forced Native Americans to vacate lands thay had lived on for generations, In the winter of 1831, under threat of invasion by the U.S, Amy, the Choctaw became the first nation to be expelled from its land altogether. They made the journey to Indian leritory on foot (some “bound in chains and masched double fil,” one historian writes) and without any food, supplies or other help from the government. Thousands of people died along the way.
