The blue whale (Balaenoptera musculus) is the largest mammal found on the planet, perhaps the largest
mammal that has ever lived, thought to be even larger than even the largest of the dinosaurs. it Belongs to a
family of animals known as the rorquals. Unfortunately, it currently listed as endangered and was hunted
nearly to extinction by the 1960s when hunting was finally banned. The current population of the blue whale
is only estimated to be about 12,000 total.
The blue whale is a greyish-blue in color with lighter grey spots accross its skin. It has a tiny pointed dorsal
fin, located low on its back. The average length is about 22-24 meters, but the female, the larger of the
species, can grow in excess of 24 meters and can weigh over 100 tons.
Blue whales are found all over the world. They migrate to warmer climates in the winter, in tropical and
subtropical locations and to frequent colder locations, like the poles, in spring and summer. They usually
travel in very small groups, often traveling alone and can swim very quickly, sometimes reaching speeds of
up to 48 km per hour. The diet of blue whales consists of plankton and krill, which are small invertebrates
that resemble shripm. The blue whales can eat over 4 tons of these tiny creatures per day during their
summer feeding season.

One day, a cat and a fox were having a conversation. The fox, who was a conceited creature, boasted how
clever she was. “Why, I know at least a hundred tricks to get away from our mutual enemies, the dogs,” she
said.
“I know only one trick to get away from dogs,” said the cat. “You should teach me some of yours!”
“Well, maybe someday, when I have the time, I may teach you a few of the simpler ones”, replied the fox
airily.
Just then they heard the barking of a pack of dogs in the distance. The barking grew louder and louder – the
dogs were coming in their direction! At once the cat ran to the nearest tree and climbed into its branches,
well out of reach of any dog. “This is the trick I told you about, the only one I know”, said the cat. “Which
one of your hundred tricks are you going to use?”
The fox sat silently under the tree, wondering which trick she should use. Before she could make up her
mind, the dogs arrived. They fell upon the fox and tore her to pieces.

Aloe vera is extremely easy to grow. Here are a few things to keep in mind while caring for your aloe vera
plant. First, make sure that the pot has a drainage hole. Then, do not over water your aloe. It is the most
important thing. An aloe can go for months without water and will rot if it is given too much. Allow the soil
to become dry before giving the plant any water. During the winter the plant should need minimal watering.
You can also fertilize your aloe once every two months. Finally, if you are harvesting the leaves you should
use the outer ones first.
31. What will happen if we give too much water to the aloe vera plant?
A. It will rot.
B. It will grow well.
C. It will be moist.
D. It will die.
This is to inform you of the following situation. Last week, the office caught several students cheating on
exams. They were using their cell phones to text message answers to other students. I want all teachers to

with cell phones during a test, it will automatically be considered cheating. The students will receive an F
and a two day suspension from school.

Jellyfish are not really fish. They are invertebrate animals. This means that unlike fish or people, they have
no backbones. In fact, they have no bones at all. Jellyfish have stomachs and mouths, but no heads. They
have nervous systems for sensing the world around them, but no brains. They are made almost entirely of
water, which is why you can look through them.
Some jellyfish can glow in darkness by making their own light. The light is made by a chemical reaction
inside the jellyfish. Scientists believe jellyfish glow for several reasons. For example, they may glow to scare
away predators or to attract animals they like to eat.
Most jellyfish live in salt water, apart from a few types that live in fresh water. Jellyfish are found in oceans
and seas all over the world. They live in warm, tropical seas and in icy waters near the North and South
poles.

Once, there was a king of Granada kingdom who decided to marry. To find a worthy woman, the court
barber told an idea to the king. “I have a magic mirror. If any woman who is not kind looks into the mirror,
there will many spots on the mirror surface.”
Soon, the news was announced to all people in the kingdom. Almost all women wanted to be the Queen of
Granada. However, there was no woman coming to have a look into the mirror. Days and weeks went by,
and the king was no closer to get a queen.
Then, the barber told the king that there was a brave shepherdess on the mountainside. The king asked him to
invite the shepherdess to the palace. Also, the royal hall was full of ladies and knights.
The king told the shepherdess to look into the mirror. The shepherdess answered that everyone made
mistakes. However she was not afraid to look into the mirror. The ladies surrounded her and found that it
was not a magic mirror. The ladies complained and felt being tricked.
Finally, the king stated that there was no trick. The king wanted to find the bride who was confident about
her character like the shepherdess.
One day I went to Bandung with my friend for a vacation. We went there on night bus when we arrived
in Cianjur, the bus stopped for a rest. I got of the bus to get a cup of coffee, but my friend didn’t. He went to
a mosque to pray. It took only a few minutes to pray, but when I came out again the bus was not there. It had
gone! Shocked and confused. I asked the shopkeeper about the bus. She said that the bus had departed about
five minutes ago.
I tried to call my friend on my cell phone, but the battery was running low. I couldn’t do anything but
hope and pray. After several minutes, my wish came true. The bus came back! Got on the bus and walked to
my seat. I was so ashamed when everybody on the bus looked at me. I could feel my face turn red.
I asked my friend why she didn’t tell the driver that I was still outside.
“I did, I told him several times that you were outside, but he said that you were in the bus toilet because he
saw a man going into the toilet,” my friend replied, laughing. The other passengers smiled at me. I was so
embarrassed.
One day a man was going to market with his son and his ass. They met a couple on the way. "Why walk
when you have an ass to ride?" called out the husband, "seat the boy on the ass."
"I would like that," said the boy, "help me up father."
And the father did that willingly.
Soon they met another couple. "How shameful of you!" cried the woman, "let your father ride, won't he be
tired?" So, the boy got down and the father rode the ass. Again they marched on.
"Poor boy", said the next person they met, "why should the lazy father ride while his son is walking?" So, the
boy got onto the ass too.
As they went on, they met some travelers. "How cruel of them!" They are up to kill the poor ass." cried one
of the travelers. Hearing this, the father and the son got down. Now they decided to carry the ass on their
shoulders. As they did so, the travelers broke into laughter. The laughter frightened the ass. It broke free and
galloped away.

It happened in my adolescence. It started with acne that showed up on my face. It was very
annoying. It lowered my self-esteem and I was embarrassed to come out of my house and play
with friends.
Fortunately, my Mum gave me a good medicine. In three weeks, the acnes started to vanish
although those showed some black spots in my face.
That was my bad experience with adolescence.

Bisons have not always lived in North America. They are relative new comers. They belong to The Bovidae
family, like domestic castle and the wild buffalo of Africa and Asia. The oldest known bison fossils have
been found in China and The Himalaya Foothill, where an animal with all those essential features of the
genus lived in million years ago. They evolved rapidly and spread over most of the northern hemisphere in
Europe and Siberia. During one of the Ice Ages, the sea level dropped, exposing a land bridge across The
Bering Strait allowing the faunas of Asia and North America to intermingle. Very clearly, the steppe bison
moved eastward to the North American Continent.

Last week, Mr Tatang’s wife had an accident. Her youngest child, Putra, was at home when it happened. He
was playing with his new toy car. Suddenly Putra heard his mother calling, “Help! Help!” he ran to the
kitchen. His mother had burnt herself with some hot cooking oil. She was crying with pain and the pan was
on fire. Mr. Tatang had gone to the office. The other children had gone to school.
Putra was too small to help his mother, and she was too frightened to speak sensibly to him. But he ran to the
neighbour’s house and asked his neighbor to come and help his mother. The neighbor soon put out the fire

When Mr. Tatang came home, his wife told him what had happened. He was very proud of his son, “When

BLUE WHALE
The largest animal alive is the blue whale. Fully grown , these great creatures reach length of over 30 meters
and weigh as much as twenty four large elephants, or more than 1,500 men. The heart of a blue whale is
more than a meter in diameter.
The blue whale is not a fish, even though it depends its entire life in the sea. Whales are mammals, just like
us. A mother whale gives birth to a live baby whale, not an egg. She feeds her baby with her own milk.
While fish are clod-blooded, whales are warm-blooded, and the have lungs and breathe air, like us.
For all its size, a blue whale feeds mainly on tiny shrimps. It is harmless to man. Unfortunately for the blue
whales, men are not harmless to them. So many blue whales are hunted and killed that very few of these
magnificent animals are now left alive.

Hi, Tom, how’s life? We’re going to have a long holiday this summer, aren’t we? What are you going to do?
You know summer is a good time for camping and hiking. We are planning to go to the Devon mountain.
It’s a nice place for camping and hiking. It’s also nice place for fishing. There is a river near camp site, but I
am not really keen on it. At night we’ll sit around the fire and sing a song. Why don’t you joint us? It’ll be
more fun if you come. Let me know soon.
Many years ago in Serawak, there were six girls who were good friends. The most beautiful of all was

One day they went to a jungle to collect some wild fruit. They lost their way. When night came, they saw a
bright fire a way. They walked towards it. There was a little old woman sitting in front of it. The old woman
gave them some cakes but Gayah asked her friends not to eat them. She knew that the old woman was a
witch. Because of it the old woman tied them up with a long rope.
Fortunately, they could untie the rope and they ran away to the river. When they arrived at the bank river,
they saw a crocodile, They asked the crocodile to cross them one by one. The crocodile agreed but he wanted
one of them to eat as a reward. Gayah agreed and she said that the crocodile could eat the sixth girl. Before
Gayah crossed the river she asked one of her friends to cross the river at the same time as the fifth girl by
hanging on the crocodile’s tail.
When the fifth girl finished to cross the river, the crocodile waited for the sixth girl. A few minutes later
the witch ran down the edge of the river to chase the girls. The crocodile thought that she was the sixth girl,
so without thinking any longer, the crocodile caught her in his mouth. Finally all the girls were safe and they
promised not to go to the jungle any more.
Lying on the bed, Lisa laughed remembering what she experienced last holiday. On that day Lisa and
her classmates planned to climb a mountain. They agreed to meet at a bus stop in front of the mall in the city.
When she reached the bus stop, she could not find her friends. She saw no one in front of the bus
except the driver. Lisa wondered if she came too early. The driver then asked her to get on the bus.
As soon as she got in, Lisa was very surprised and embarrassed to know there were no one in the bus
except her and the driver. As the bus left, she realized that she mistakenly came to the wrong bus stop.

THE CHEETAH
The cheetah is the fastest animal on land. It can run 100 kilometers an hour. It is now rare and is one of the
animals which is in danger of extinction.
The cheetah has a small head and ears, and long, powerful legs. It always hunts and chases its prey on open
ground.
This is a different way of hunting from the other “big cats.” They like to stay in and near trees to catch their
prey. The cheetah is also different from other cats because it cannot draw in its claws.

Seals, sea lions and walruses live both on land and in the sea. When on dry land or on ice, they are very
clumsy in their movements. But in the water they swim gracefully. They all leave the water for land or ice
fields to give birth to their young.
The dolphins and the sea cows are sea mammals. Dolphins and porpoises look alike but usually the
dolphins are larger. These animals are mainly fish eaters. Experiments show that dolphins are intelligent and
can communicate with each other. They can be trained to perform various kinds of tricks and acts.
The highly inteligent killer whale belongs to the dolphin family. Despite of its scary name, it has never
been heard to attack human.
Jellyfish
Jellyfish are not really fish. They are invertebrate animals. This means that unlike fish or people, they have
no backbones. In fact, they have no bones at all.
Jellyfish have stomachs and mouths, but no heads. They have nervous systems for sensing the world
around them, but no brains. They are made almost entirely of water, which is why you can look through
them.
Some jellyfish can glow in darkness by making their own light. The light is made by a chemical
reaction inside the jellyfish. Scientists believe jellyfish glow for several reasons. For example, they may
glow to scare away predators or to attract animals they like to eat.
Most jellyfish live in salt water, apart from a few types that live in fresh water. Jellyfish are found in
oceans and seas all over the world. They live in warm, tropical seas and in icy waters near the North and
South poles.

Once upon a time there was a poor widow who had an only son name Jack. They were so poor that they
didn’t have anything except a cow. When the cow had grown too old, his mother sent Jack to the market to
sell it. On the way to the market, Jack met the butcher who had some beautiful beans in his hand. The
butcher told the boy the beans were of great value and persuaded the silly boy to sell the cow for the beans.
Jack brought them happily. When he told his mother about this, his mother became so angry that she threw
the beans out of the window.
When Jack woke up in the morning, he felt his room was quite dark and shady. So he jumped to the window.
What did he see? the beanstalk which ran up just like a big leader.
He climbed ... till last he reached the sky. While looking around, he saw a very huge castle. He was very
amused. Then Jack walked along the part leading to the castle. There was a giantess asleep. Then, Jack stole
a bag of gold coins and made his escape down the beanstalk.
Jack climbed the beanstalk twice more. He learned of other treasures and stole them when the giant slept:
first a goose that laid golden eggs, then a magic harp that played by itself. The giant woke when Jack left the
house with the harp and chased Jack down the beanstalk. Jack called to his mother for an axe and before the
giant reached the ground, cut down the beanstalk, causing the giant to fall to his death.
Jack and his mother lived happily ever after with the riches that Jack acquired.
Hundreds of years ago, during the reign of the last king of Majapahit (13 – 14 century AD) Brawijaya, one of
the kings' wives gave birth to a girl, Roro Anteng. Later she was married to Joko Seger, from Brahman
(priests) caste. Because of an unfortunate situation, they were forced to leave the kingdom. They settled an
area in the mountain named "Tengger".
For years, they were unhappy because they didn't have a child. They climbed the peak of the
mountain prayed to God. Betara Bromo (God of fire) promised them many children, but they had to sacrifice
their youngest child.
Finally they had 25 children, and they had to sacrifice the youngest, Kesuma, but they hid him. But
an eruption happened and Kesuma fell into the crater. Then his voice was heard. "I have to be sacrificed so
that you will always all stay alive. From now on you should arrange an annual ceremony on the 14th of
Kesodo."
Kesuma's brothers and sisters held the offering ceremony every year by offering fruits, vegetables,
rice and meat. This has been done until today by Kejawen sects (the Javanese original religion mixed with
Islam).

SQUIRRELS
Squirrels are cute looking animals. There are around 230 species of them. There are several kinds of
squirrels, such as tree squirrels, ground squirrels, chipmunks, and flying squirrels. They come in different
sizes. The smallest ones are the African pygmy squirrels which are only 13 cm long. The biggest ones are the
Asian giant squirrels, at almost a meter long.
Most Squirrels live in trees, except for ground squirrels. Most of their diet consist of vegetables, but
somestimes they eat insects, too. Squirrels have a habit of keeping seeds, which helps spreading trees and
plants. Ground squirrels hibernate during colder seasons, but tree squirrels do not.
An amphibian is an animal that has moist, hairless skin. Amphibians are cold-blooded, which means
they cannot make their own body heat. They get warm in the sun and cool off in the shade. The three main
groups of amphibians are frogs and toads, salamanders, and caecilians. All amphibians have backbones.
The three kinds of amphibians look very different from each other. Frogs and toads have legs but do not
have tails. Salamanders have short legs and long bodies ending in tails. Caecilians do not have any legs.
They look a lot like big earthworms.
There are more than 4,000 different species (kinds) of amphibians in the world. Nearly all amphibian
species are frogs or toads. Toads differ from frogs in the roughness of their skin. Toads have bumpy skin, and
frogs have smooth skin. Toads also have shorter legs than frogs.
The biggest amphibian found on Earth is the Japanese giant salamander. It can grow to be longer
than 5 feet (1.5 meters). Tiny frogs, such as the gold frog, are only about 0.4 inch (about 1 centimeter) long.

islands of Sumatera, Java, Kalimantan, Irian and other islands in Indonesia. They are very important for our
lives. Forest give us many kinds of export commodities such as timber, rattans, as well as rubber. Forest also
protect us from danger floods. The the rainy season the roots of the trees in the forest absorb the rain water
and store it under the ground. In the dry season the water will come out and it is very useful for us for
reservoir and irrigation. If there are no forests, the rain water cann't be stored, therewill be erosion of the soil
and will suffer from terrible floods. Forests also help us to purify the air of polution. The trees of the forests
need carbon dioxide from the air and send the oxygen out into the air, which make the air fresh and pure. The
fresh and pure air is needed for our health.
95. What do the forests do to safe the people from the danger of flood?
A. give the commoditity such as rattan, rubber, and timber
B. purify the air of the pollution around the environment
