Cactus, common name for the family comprising a peculiar group of spiny, fleshy plants native to
America. The family contains about 1650 species, most of which are adapted to arid climates. The fruits of
cacti are important sources of food and drink in many areas to which they are native. Because cacti require
little care and exhibit bizzare form, they are popular for home cultivation and are coming under increasing
pressure as a result. More than 17 kinds of cacti now face extinction because of plundering by avid collectors
and professional poachers, especially in the southwestern United States and nothern Mexico.
Cactus plants usually consist of spiny stems and roots. Leaves are greatly reduced or entirely
absent. Only in two genera are fully formed leaves present. The stems of cacti are usually swollen and fleshy,
adapted to water storage, and many are shaped in ways that cause rain to flow directly to the root system for
absorbtion. The roots form extensive system near the soil surface, assuring that a given plant will absorb the
maximum amount of water from a wide area; plants in deserts are usually widely spaced.
The flowers of cacti are often large and showy and occur singly rather than in clusters of several
flowers. The perianth ( floral tube ) does not consist of sharply differentiated sepals and petals, but rather of
series of bracts (modified leaves), which gradually grade into sepals and finally into showy petals. The
flowers have many stamens; the ovary inferior and fused to the perianth. The fruits are often brightly colored
and fleshy.

A Fox and a Cat

One day, a cat and a fox were having a conversation. The fox, who was a conceited creature, boasted how
clever she was. “Why, I know at least a hundred tricks to get away from our mutual enemies, the dogs,” she
said.
“I know only one trick to get away from dogs,” said the cat. “You should teach me some of yours!”
“Well, maybe someday, when I have the time, I may teach you a few of the simpler ones”, replied the fox
airily.
Just then they heard the barking of a pack of dogs in the distance. The barking grew louder and louder – the
dogs were coming in their direction! At once the cat ran to the nearest tree and climbed into its branches,
well out of reach of any dog. “This is the trick I told you about, the only one I know”, said the cat. “Which
one of your hundred tricks are you going to use?”
The fox sat silently under the tree, wondering which trick she should use. Before she could make up her
mind, the dogs arrived. They fell upon the fox and tore her to pieces.

Jellyfish are not really fish. They are invertebrate animals. This means that unlike fish or people, they have
no backbones. In fact, they have no bones at all. Jellyfish have stomachs and mouths, but no heads. They
have nervous systems for sensing the world around them, but no brains. They are made almost entirely of
water, which is why you can look through them.
Some jellyfish can glow in darkness by making their own light. The light is made by a chemical reaction
inside the jellyfish. Scientists believe jellyfish glow for several reasons. For example, they may glow to scare
away predators or to attract animals they like to eat.

Bisons have not always lived in North America. They are relative new comers. They belong to The Bovidae
family, like domestic castle and the wild buffalo of Africa and Asia. The oldest known bison fossils have
been found in China and The Himalaya Foothill, where an animal with all those essential features of the
genus lived in million years ago. They evolved rapidly and spread over most of the northern hemisphere in
Europe and Siberia. During one of the Ice Ages, the sea level dropped, exposing a land bridge across The
Bering Strait allowing the faunas of Asia and North America to intermingle. Very clearly, the steppe bison
moved eastward to the North American Continent.

BLUE WHALE
The largest animal alive is the blue whale. Fully grown , these great creatures reach length of over 30 meters
and weigh as much as twenty four large elephants, or more than 1,500 men. The heart of a blue whale is
more than a meter in diameter.
The blue whale is not a fish, even though it depends its entire life in the sea. Whales are mammals, just like
us. A mother whale gives birth to a live baby whale, not an egg. She feeds her baby with her own milk.
While fish are clod-blooded, whales are warm-blooded, and the have lungs and breathe air, like us.

For all its size, a blue whale feeds mainly on tiny shrimps. It is harmless to man. Unfortunately for the blue
whales, men are not harmless to them. So many blue whales are hunted and killed that very few of these
magnificent animals are now left alive.

70. What is the main idea of the second paragraph?

The fruits are often brightly colored
and fleshy.
71.“...They are popular for home cultivation and ...” ( the first paragraph )
The underlined word means....
A. Famous
B. Strange
C. Unusual
D. Special

Our world has more than one and a half million kinds of plants and animals. Unfortunately, we have lost a
great many of those species. We can find only a small number of certain species of animal because people
have been killing them. As the population grows, more species are lost and, many forest are destroyed.
People build dam which cause the loss of certain kinds of fish. People build wide roads, field, and big
buildings which cuts some animals off from their sources of food. Factories throw away waste into rivers,
lake, seas, and ocean. The waste contain poison. The water becomes polluted. Some Asian countries have
built National Park and Wild Life reserves to protect the animal species. In other countries however, these
things are difficult to do because the people there still need to hunt these animals for food. We can help our

Spray all with cleaner on them and scrub them with a scrubbing brush.
3. Fill your bucket with hot water mixed with the quantity of floor cleaner specified on the label

Jellyfish
Jellyfish are not really fish. They are invertebrate animals. This means that unlike fish or people, they have
no backbones. In fact, they have no bones at all.
Jellyfish have stomachs and mouths, but no heads. They have nervous systems for sensing the world
around them, but no brains. They are made almost entirely of water, which is why you can look through
them.
Some jellyfish can glow in darkness by making their own light. The light is made by a chemical

accompanied by his loyal bodyguards. Along the way, the hurricane came. The guards begged the king to
cancel his plan. "Sir, it is dangerous if we continue the journey with this condition. It's better if we stop first
to a safer place. If I am not mistaken, there is a place nearby here named Tumasik Island. “What if we stay
there while waiting for a safer condition?" Said the captain of the ship. The king approved this opinion. Their
boat was docked to Tumasik Island shortly afterwards.
Arriving on the island, King and several bodyguards left the ship and looked around the island. When they're
looking around, suddenly an animal which was not far from them flashed. The king was surprised and
fascinated. The beast was so huge, looked dashing, and was golden in color." What creature was that?"
Asked the King to his guards. "If i am not mistaken, people call it “Singa”, your majesty," one of his
bodyguards replied. "What?" Asked the King to clarify. “Singa” replied the guard.
The king then asked more explanation about the animal. Attentively, The King listened to all explanations
from his bodyguard about the animal. "Then, we give the name of this place “Singapore”. “Meaning: The
City of Lion which is derived from malay “Singa” (lion) and “Pura / Pore” (City)". Since that time the town
