Chapter 9 - Motion

Period One

Curriculum Outcomes
 325-2 Analyze graphically and mathematically the relationship among
displacement, time, and velocity
 212-9 Develop appropriate sampling procedures and performing and recording
 445 Work Collaboratively in planning and carrying out investigations, as well as
in generating and evaluating ideas

Learning Objectives
 Students will follow steps for scientific inquiry
 Students will work collaboratively to design and build a balloon car
 Students will be able to analyze and calculate a dt-graph

Materials and Resources


 Balloon Car Contest Handouts (30)
 Scissors
 Tape
 Hot glue gun
 Cardboard
 Balloons

Assessment
 Conversation and Observation: The teacher should circulate the class and note of
whether students are following the steps of scientific inquiry and whether they are
engaged in scientific thinking. The teacher should also take note of which
students are struggling and require more assistance and guidance.

Activities
1. Review dt-graphs (10 mins)
 Using the PowerPoint, the teacher should review:
i. Proper labeling
ii. Calculating slope
iii. Putting data onto a graph
iv. Extracting data from a graph
 The teacher should review the 3 questions from previous class/homework
 The teacher should have students model the questions and incorporate
their answers into the review session
 The students should be correcting their work and participating in the class
discussion/review
 Before continuing, the teacher should ask if there are any questions
2. Introduce the Balloon Car Contest (5 mins)
 The teacher should handout the Balloon Car Contest instructions with the
table and graph
 The teacher should review the requirements and procedures with the
students and ask if there are any questions
3. Designing & Building Balloon Cars (25 mins)
 Students should select a partner
 Students should gather materials and begin designing a plan for their
balloon car
 Students should build and test their balloon car
 The teacher should circulate and assist groups with their balloon cars
 Plans for differentiation: The teacher can create the groups keeping in
mind which students work well together and how their strengths and
weaknesses will complement each other.
 The teacher can provide more support and suggestions for certain groups.
 For students who are excelling with this activity, the teacher should have
them sketch their balloon car labeling all forces that are at work.
4. Closure (5 mins)
 The teacher should have students clean up their working area and labeling
their work
 The teacher should inspect all working areas to ensure they have been
properly cleaned
 The teacher and students should review the highlights of the lesson
 The teacher should inform the students of what tomorrow’s class will
entail

Activities
1. Designing & Building Balloon Car (30 mins)
 Students should gather their balloon car and materials and continue to
work on their creation
 The teacher should circulate and continue to assist the groups
 The teacher should remind students to test their balloon cars
2. Balloon Car Race (20 mins)
 The teacher should mark a starting position and several distances across
the floor with tape
 The teacher should ask for a volunteer to time each trial
 The teacher should ask for a volunteer to record each distance and time
 The teacher should have the group place their balloon car behind the
starting position and coordinate with the timer of when to release their
balloon car
 The teacher should facilitate the transition between trials and groups
3. Closure (5 mins)
 The teacher should have students clean up their working area
 The teacher should have students label their balloon cars
 The teacher should ensure each student has a copy/photo of the data
 The teacher should inform students to complete the calculations for speed
and complete the dt-graph as homework

Balloon Car Contest


The challenge:
 To design and build a balloon car that will race over 3.00m.
 To design and build a balloon car that will travel the farthest distance at the fastest
speed!

Requirements:
 The balloon car must move on it’s own wheels
 The sole source of propulsion is from the balloon

Materials:
 Balloon (provided)
 Wheels (may be purchased)
 Any household items (i.e. pop cans, cardboard, straws, sticks, etc.)
 You may NOT use any Lego or model kits

Procedure:
1. Select a partner
2. Create a design and plan for your balloon car
3. Build the balloon car
4. Test your balloon car while noting any unexpected problems
5. Revisit the plan and adjust accordingly
6. Participate in Race Day!
7. Record data and calculate the speed for every group
8. Draw and label a dt-graph for your team
9. Hand in to Ms. Leger next class
