THE TRUMPET CALL

Our Mission: To love Jesus Christ and to share His Love

Our Vision: To be a Christian community where Christ is transforming lives
East Stroudsburg United Methodist Church Volume IV Issue 18 May 6, 2018

Pastor’s Corner
As we come into the month of May, it seems we’ve finally turned the corner on spring and are
seeing some warmer weather! I pray we can all find a way to get out of doors and enjoy God’s
creation. I offer thanks and gratitude to Scott Kuhnle for bringing a powerful word on
“obedience” last Sunday, and you will hear him again on Mother’s Day, a week from Sunday.
This coming Sunday, we will offer both “welcome” and “farewell.” The welcome goes to our new
Stephen Ministers, who will be commissioned in both worship services. This will be an opportunity for all who
might be considering Stephen Ministry to hear more about it and reflect on whether there is a calling from God
upon their hearts for this ministry.

The farewell part of our service is for Julie Searle, who is stepping down as our choir director. She and her
husband, Justin, have been faithfully attending and participating for the better part of two
years here at ESUMC, even though they drive almost an hour each way from their home in
the Lehigh Valley. As Julie is pregnant with their first child, it will soon become too much for
them to make the trip north as regularly as they do (remember, Julie is here not just on
Sunday mornings but for choir practice on Thursday nights as well!). We have been so
blessed to have Julie as a staff member! As you can see from the included photo, her smile is
vibrant and contagious, and she blesses all those around her with her warm personality. She
is a great lady of faith, and I know that no matter where she finds herself in the future, God will lead her to be
successful in all she does. Thanks, Julie, not only for how you have so ably led our choir over the last two
seasons, but also how you have participated in the Praise Team for the contemporary service and integrated
yourself into other ministries of our church! You will be greatly missed, and we hope to see you and Justin back
with us from time to time.

After our successful What’s the Scoop? ice cream social at the end of March which accompanied conversation
about the future of our church, we look forward to our Taco Talk following our combined worship service (10
a.m.) on Sunday, May 20, which is also Pentecost Sunday. Did you ever notice how central food is for United
Methodists whenever we get together for something important? We also have a box set up, as we did last time,
to receive your questions about various aspects of our church’s ministry. Please look for that box in Oberholtzer
Hall and place your questions there for us to answer on May 20. Please sign up for the event in Fellowship Hall
this Sunday and next so that we know you’re coming. Also, please remember our event, Facing the Future with
Hope, the day before on May 19. This is a Mission Connexion event featuring a special guest speaker (who will
also be our preacher on May 20), the Rev. Dr. Barry Steiner-Ball. This workshop, taking place from 8:30 a.m. to
12:30 p.m., is to help the church and individuals and families within it to see how we can cope with the drug crisis
which is a scourge on our country and our own area. There is no charge for this event, but we do ask that you
register ahead of time so that we can plan for materials and snacks. The easiest way is to call the church office
(570-421-3280) and let us know you’re coming, or go to: www.eventbrite.com/e/facing-the-crisis-in-hope-
tickets-45137502485 to easily register for free.
Blessings, Pastor Jim
