What is Engineering Design?

Engineering Design is the result of a process

An identified need or problem
Involves engineering related activities such as
prototyping, testing, modeling and analyses
Provides a solution for the identified need or problem

The ability to design is both a Science and an Art

The art is best learned by Doing Design!

Engineering Design

Design is the product of planning and work

A good design requires both analysis and
synthesis
Analysis involves the use of engineering and
scientific disciplines to characterize product
performance
Synthesis involves the combination of
solutions into a total workable system

Engineering Design

A Good Design provides a solution to the

identified need or problem in an innovative
manner and defines a standard for others
to follow

New Products

New products are critical for corporate

prosperity
Approximately 33% of revenues come from
products they did not sell 5 years ago
Successful new products are profitable
– Median achieve 33% ROI or better
– Median have payback of 2 years or less
– Median achieve market share of 35%

New Products

Significant R&D expenditures and investment

– $236 billion in US in 1999 or 2.7% US GDP
– Pharmaceutical industry spends 12.3% of sales
– Typical medical device company from 5% to 10%

Drivers of Innovation

Technological advances
Changing customer needs
Shortening product life cycles

High Odds of Failure

Great majority of new products never make it

to the market
For every 7 new products ideas
– 4 enter development
– 1.5 are launched
– 1 is successful

Design Process

Problem-Solving Methodology
Definition of the problem
Gathering of information
Generation of alternative solutions
Evaluation of alternatives
Solution of the problem
Communication of the results

Design Requirements

The identification and establishment of

Design Requirements are critical for a Good
Design
Acceptable performance is essential
Performance requirements include
– Functional
– Complementary

23 4/01/09 ME153
Design Requirements

Functional performance requirements include

– Forces, Dimensions, Weight, Power, Deflection,
etc
Complementary performance requirements
include
– Quality, Useful Life, Robustness, Reliability,
Safety

Design Control

Design and Development Plan – Project Plan

Design Input – translate Design Goals into Design
Requirements
Design Output – design drawings, models,
prototypes, testing
Design Verification – does the design meet intended
specifications
Design Validation – demonstrates that performance
requirements can be consistently met
