What is a polynomial? ____________________________________________________________________
________________________________________________________________________________________________.
How do we represent polynomials:
Adding and Subtracting
Polynomials
1. Polynomial have _________________________________.
2. Sum= _______________________.
Difference= ______________________________.
3. Apply the _______________________________ Property.
4. Combine _________________________.
5. Write in ______________________________ Form.
EXAMPLES of Addition:
1. 𝑥 ! + 2𝑥 ! + 4 + (𝑥 ! + 4𝑥 + 4)
2. 𝑥 ! + 3𝑥 ! − 2𝑥 + 6 + (2𝑥 ! − 3𝑥 ! + 4𝑥 ! + 𝑥 + 1)
EXAMPLES of Subtraction:
1. 𝑥 ! − 2𝑥 ! + 6𝑥 − 4 − (𝑥 ! + 3𝑥 + 1)
2. 𝑥 ! + 4𝑥 ! − 2𝑥 ! + 𝑥 − 3 − (−3𝑥 ! − 4𝑥 ! − 7𝑥 + 4)
EXAMPLES of Multiplication:
1. 2𝑥 − 1 (𝑥 + 1)
2. 3𝑥 ! + 2𝑥 ! − 𝑥 + 4 (𝑥 − 3)
Dividing Polynomials:
Long Division: ____________________________________________________________________
________________________________________________________________________________________________.
Synthetic: ____________________________________________________________________
________________________________________________________________________________________________.
Synthetic Division
1. Set up your division bar upside down.
2. Write your value 𝑎 outside the division bar. Inside write
the given polynomial. Include ZEROS if necessary. For
example 𝑥 ! − 1 is the same as 𝑥 ! + 0𝑥 ! − 1.
3. Bring down the leading coefficient to the bottom row.
4. Multiply the value a by the value just written on the bottom
row.
5. Add the column created in step 3.
6. Repeat until done.
EXAMPLES of Division:
We are using long division, synthetic division, galley
method.
1. 2𝑥 ! + 7𝑥 + 6 ÷ (𝑥 + 2)
! ! !!!!!"
2.

The Remainder Theorem: ______________________________________________
________________________________________________________________________________________________.
EXAMPLES: Apply the theorem to both division
problems from above.
1. 2𝑥 ! + 7𝑥 + 6 ÷ (𝑥 + 2)
! ! !!!!!"
2.
