ASSIGNMENT 1: Single – Phase Transformers

Surname & Initials: _________________________

Student Number: ________________

1. A large transformer operating at no – load draws an exciting current 𝐼0 of 5 A

when the primary is connected to a 230 V, 50 Hz source. From a wattmeter
test it is known that the iron losses are equal to 180 W. Calculate:
a) The reactive power absorbed by the core ___________ (1)

b) The value of 𝑅𝑐 and 𝑋𝜇 _________ and _________ (2)

c) The value of 𝐼𝑐 and 𝐼𝜇 __________ and ________ (2)

2. The secondary winding of a transformer possesses 180 turns. When the

transformer is under load, the secondary current has an effective value of 18 A,
50 Hz. Furthermore, the mutual flux Φ𝑚 has a peak value of 20 mWb. The
secondary leakage flux Φ𝑙2 has a peak value of 3 mWb. Calculate:
a) The voltage induced in the secondary winding by its leakage flux _____ (1)

b) The value of the secondary leakage reactance ____________ (1)

c) The value if E2 induced by the mutual flux Φ𝑚 ____________ (1)

3. The nameplate of a distribution transformer indicates 250 kVA, 50 Hz, primary

4160 V, secondary 480 V.
a) Calculate the nominal primary and secondary currents _________ (1)

b) If we apply 2000 V to the 4160 V primary, can we still draw 250 kVA from the
transformer? ___________ (1)

4. A single – phase transformer rated at 3000 kVA, 69 kV/4.16 kV, 50 Hz has a

total internal impedance Z𝑝 of 127 Ω, referred to the primary side. Calculate:
a) The rated primary and secondary currents _________ (1)

b) The voltage regulation from no – load to full – load for a 2000 kW resistive
load, knowing that the primary supply voltage is fixed at 69 kV _______ (1)

c) The primary and secondary currents if the secondary is accidentally short

– circuited ___________ (1)
