Common English phrases for introductions

As with any language, there are numerous ways of introducing oneself. This short reading will
present you with four sets of informal and formal introductions, followed by suggested
responses to each introduction.

Introducing yourself to a stranger in an informal setting (from most to least formal):

A. Most formal introduction

Introduction: Hi, my name is (first name) and I’m from (country or place of work). 
Response: Nice to meet you. I’m (first name). I’m from (country or place of work).

B. Less formal introduction

Introduction: Hello. I’m (first name). Nice to meet you. 


Response: My name is (first name). Pleased to meet you too.

C. Somewhat formal introduction

Introduction:I’m (first name). What's your name? 


Response: I’m (first name). Nice to meet you.

D. Least formal introduction

Introduction: Hey*, I’m (first name). How’s it going? 


Response: Hey. Nice to meet you too. I’m (first name).

*‘Hey’ is an extremely informal way of gree ng someone. It replaces ‘Hi’ or ‘Hello’ and is o en paired with ‘How’s it


going?’ It is very common in North American English. If someone ini ates an introduc on or gree ng with ‘Hey’, it is
common to respond with ‘Hey’ as well.

Introducing yourself to a stranger in formal business settings:

A. Formal introduction

Introduction: Hello, I just wanted to introduce myself. My name is (first name), (full name). I
work for (place of employment). Extend your hand to the person you are introducing yourself to 
Response: How do you do? I’m pleased to meet you. My name is (first name), (full name). I work
for (place of employment). Exchange business cards

B. Formal introduction

Introduction: Hello, I don’t think we’ve met. My name is (first name), (full name). I work for
(place of employment). Extend your hand to the person you are introducing yourself to 
Response: Oh, hello. It’s a pleasure to meet you. My name is (first name), (full name). I work for
(place of employment). Exchange business cards

C. Formal introduction

Introduction:Allow me to introduce myself. My name is (first name), (full name). I work for
(place of employment). Extend your hand to the person you are introducing yourself to 
Response: Pleased to meet you. My name is (first name), (full name). I work for (place of
employment). Exchange business cards

D. Formal introduction

Introduction: I don’t think we’ve been introduced. My name is (first name), (full name). I work
for (place of employment). Extend your hand to the person you are introducing yourself to 
Response: Nice to meet you. My name is (first name), (full name). I work for (place of
employment). Exchange business cards
