Abstract. According to the current network environment of campus, the specific scheme of network transition is proposed,
which has conducted detailed analyses for the basic concepts, the types of address, the necessary technology for transition
and the agreement and principle of transition. According to the tunneling technology of IPv6, the IPv4 network and IPv6
network can communicate with each other, and the network of whole campus can operate well.

Key words: IPv6; IPv4; Transitional Scheme

INTRODUCTION
The address of the transition plan is made for a college’s specific environment of current network. We understood
that the current network equipment is working on the network based on Ipv4. As for the upgrade of this network
address, we must note that it cannot have too much impact on the teaching tasks of colleges. The process of transition
is bound to be a gradual process, and it need to take a lot of manpower and resources.

The deployment strategy of IPv6

According to the detailed situations knowing from the college’s network center, it is necessary to gradually
implement deployment strategy and finish the smooth transition of IPv6 step by step.

The initial stage of IPv6’s development

The current network environment is still on the basis of IPv4, and the IPv6 is still used in the limited area. There
are so many deficiencies, and so far the IPv6 is only in the budding stage.

The coexisting stage of IPv6 and IPv4

Due to the so many advantages of IPv6 network, it has been widely used, and the Internet IPv6’s backbone network
has appeared. More and more services are carried on the IPv6 network. Therefore, speeding up the application of
tunneling technology can build service platform of IPv6 network more quickly. But at this stage, there are still a large
number of services based on the traditional IPv4 network, so the dual-stack node is significant. The use of tunneling
and dual-stack technology ensures the coexistence of two addresses

The leading role of IPv6
In the certain period of address transition, IPv4 must be replaced by IPv6.The backbone network in this period has
been mainly led by IPv6.A new generation of network is the deployment of tunneling technology. At the stage of IPv6
playing the leading role, the connected network among tunnels has changed into IPv4 network. At this stage, it is
suggested that the address transition has been basically completed. The good technical support can better serve for the
new generation of networks.

THE PROBLEMS OF IPV6 TRANSITION

The personnel of deployment and maintenance

The staff must master necessary skills for the transition and the related content about the IPv6 Protocol. And the
professional staffs who have accepted professional training will be better. They need to know about addressing scheme
and protocol of IPv6 to some extent. With these conditions, they can better control the access of new-generation
network, better maintain and manage the new-generation network and provide convenient services for us.

The need of upgrade for safety tools

Because of the conditions where lots of current network equipment has not been upgraded, it is not supported by
the IPv6 protocol. At the same time, the IPv6 protocol does not have backward compatibility, therefore,if the network
equipment is not upgraded, both the current software and hardware will be unable to work normally under the network
environment of IPv6. So, as long as it is involved in the network equipment and software, the compatible upgrade of
IPv6 need to be conducted.

The upgrade of device configuration

The running configuration of the current device is working on the basis of IPv4 network. If it is directly applied to
the IPv6 network, obviously, it cannot work normally. Therefore, many of the parameters of configuration should be
re-evaluated to ensure that they can support the IPv6 network environment, and you can contact the operator to help
complete this process.

The new risks caused by tunneling protocols

The team of network and security has spent a lot of time and spirit to ensure that the IPv6 is a safe protocol.
However, the one of biggest risks of this change is that the use of tunneling protocol supports the transition to IPv6.
These protocols allow isolating the communication of IPv6 when the data streams of IPv4 pass the incompatible
equipment.

THE TRANSITION PHASE OF IPV6

A college’s campus network currently has a mature IPv4 network environment; Cisco7304 router can access to
CERNET education network; it has many different application servers and has some operating systems including
Solaris, Linux, Freebsd, and Windows2003. All of these provide a good foundation for the transition of IPv6. Because
the transition of IPv6 should be conducted in the case of that the campus network can ensure normal work, it is
necessary to consider the various conditions and influencing factors.

Networking Mode
The current Internet environment and many applications are still hosted on the IPv4, and IPv6 network is still
applied in a small range. Dual stack protocol sets foundation for the transition, and the network platform supports
applications of IPv4 and IPv6. Border routers use dual-stack technology to access to theCERNET2 network on the

basis of IPv6 network. Integrating a college’s network, the three-layer core exchanges deployment of dual-stack
technology to deal with IPv6 data.
The convergence layer should also be replaced by a switch which supports dual stack. After all, IPv4 will be
gradually eliminated to adapt to future development of network, and it is necessary to complete the hierarchical
construction as soon as possible.

The detailed scheme of transition

As for the detailed scheme of addressing transition, we do not need to change a lot for the network line but replace
some equipment which can carry the dual-stack protocol, and we can access to IPv6 network conveniently and quickly.
The core exchange adopts dual-stack and three-layer switch to apply for addresses and domain name, build IPv6 and
DNS services and set up other application services of IPv6.we can adopt various networking methods, such as Tunnel
Broke and ISATAP, to implement and complete the accession to GERNET2. We can upgrade border router and allocate
variety of servers to implement the connection of IPv6 internet and Gernet2.
As for the dual-snack servers and clients with Windows operating system to connect IPv6 network, in order to
symbolize the ISTAP routers, we can set the command as follows: net interface ipv6 set router x x x x //x x x x.
For the servers and clients of UNIX operating system, most of the systems do not support ISATAP, so they adopt
a proxy server to this problem. Therefore, the software in the server-side uses squid2.6 to directly support dual-stack.
As for some common application servers such as WEB, they use the reverse mapping function of virtual host of
rapache2 to achieve the connection of IPv6. When they configure the file of http.config, the application needs to load
the cache and proxy module. After the connection of IPv6, the extra net of IPv6 can directly have access to the WEB
server.
Through the above methods, without altering the existing network and network services, the user in school and
outside school can use IPv6 network to connect with each other. Besides, due to these methods, the smooth transition
from IPv4 to IPv6 has been achieved, and the goal of working together between them has been reached.
