Chapter I
Introduction
Korean pop, k-pop for short has its recent years became a global fad,
captivating youth all around the world regardless of linguistic differences. K-pop
is an ever adapting media movement that has already proven its worth both in
numbers and in bridging borders between citizens across the globe. K-pop is the
most influential pop culture phenomenon of all time (Naiav, 2010). According to
Korean portal, one of the things which prove that k-pop is very popular in Canada
is that the University of Toronto has its own pool of Korean language classes. K-
pop is a massive industry global sales worth $30 in 2019, and the figure is likely
to have doubled last years, according to a government website. Truly k-pop is
booming around the globe because of its ways that most mainstream fans
appreciate (Gregs, 2014).
In addition, more than two thousand k-pop fans gather the first ever
Philippine k-pop convention held in the Philippines international center on
December 10, 2009. Various fans club and organizations join hands to establish
the Philippines k-pop committee, since it's inception in late 2009, numerous
project events have been held like parties and other events from observation. It is
clear that Filipino fans joined social groups to mingle with people with the same
interest, as proven by the sub culture of k-pop fans in the Philippines which is our
country flamed by activities of fans club and organizations. The Philippines is one
of the countries which are greatly influenced by Korean wave or "Hallyu" (Zalon,
2011).
However, here in Mati City most of the millennial were dominated by the
fever of Korean pop culture. Some has k-pop saved on their smartphones, even
though they didn't understand the language (Cortez, 2017). Moreover, Korean
pop is an ear candy of early millennial here in our city cause the way they deliver
the songs and on how they do on making their videos is so catchy. Also their
charismatic faces attracted the fans (Dizon, 2017).

Related Theories
There are three theories that we can relate to this topic firstly is "Acculturation
Theory". Basically this theory is a process in which members of one cultural
groups adopt the beliefs, values and behaviors of one group (Barros, 2006).
Acculturation occurs to a certain extent through the way media has help Filipino
fans adopt behaviors from Korean pop culture namely listening to k-pop,
watching Korean dramas, TV shows and other more.
The second theory is the "Super Peer Theory ". This theory believes that
adolescents mimic the behavior of those individuals who they most want to be
like (Escobar chares, et al., 2005). Fans of Korean pop music commonly
experience imagining themselves as the artists and meeting their favorite band.
Fans look up to the artist in Korean pop music and admire them to the point that
they want to be like them. They also identified the kind of people they want to be
associated with based on the art that they idolized.
Chapter III
6
This discuss some issues and the possible causal reasons why teens were
obsessed on listening k-pop music.
K--pop
K-pop or k pop is a short term for "Korean pop". It can refer to the whole of
popular music in Korea, but is often used in a narrower sense to describe the
genre that has dominated the Korean music market for about the last 30 years.
The genre incorporates elements of western pop, dance, electronic, R&B, and
Korean hip-hop but after years of experience music makers & producer in south
Korea known how to "home-make" successful hits with a distinctive sound
different from its formerly western roots (Hyucham, 2014).
Korean pop has been growing as a phenomenon over the past few decades.
Its songs drawn on many genres. Whether serving a dub step break or flirting a
euro pop chorus, artists inevitably deliver deliriously upbeat hooks. Leading
global trends as much as they follow them, k-pop idols have dived into the trap
music scene, making most melodic synthesizers and crisp snares (Eurovision,
2017).
Obsessive fans that try to fill up a void may come from a dysfunctional family
or maybe suffering from loneliness, bullying, or some other negative feeling.
When they see their idols with seemingly perfect lives with their flawless hair and
trendy outfits, they can't help but want to believe them. They aspire to become
like their idols leading to stalking and start living vicariously through them
(Vintage, 2016).
The people who love k-pop are called k-poppers according to hub page.
Because of the boom of k-pop. Korean culture in general has grown into
something more as it had made other nationalities love everything about Korean
and even Asian culture (Write, 2017).
7
K-pop lovers imitate the dances and songs of Korean singers and perform
on many stages. The Korean wave continues to get bigger through Asia and
Europe (Soo min, 2011). In order for one to well comprehend whether the Korean
pop music is really mature or not, there are various aspects one ought to
consider. First is apparent that the Korean music industry is actually aging and
not just the alleged sense of number increment. A number of idols that seems
endless have had a constant debuting, giving singers in other genres no single
chance to at least reach for the spotlight before it's disappearance. Those who
are the industry representatives universally agrees that the very industry
happens to be in a quick and urgent measures. The industry's immaturity has led
too many agreeing that the apparent possibility of success as pertains to today’s
current market with what is being referred to as 'normal' is just 0% (Battle, 2016).
Teenagers are the biggest victims of the K-Pop effect anywhere including the
origin of South Korea, everyone knowing about Girls' Generation or Big Bang
regardless of what age group they belong to (which is similar to that of your
country knowing of the biggest pop artist--everyone not liking them but everyone
acknowledging their existence), but the young ones usually being the most
gullible and influenced. As seen in the video and can easily summarize the 16
minute clip, appearance is a huge and key factor for normal people especially for
ones who acknowledge the existence of K-Pop. Most normal people apparently
resort to plastic surgery as said by a Korean female in the clip who has lived
overseas in America and most inspired by their favorite idols to get plastic
surgery. To be honest, it's hard to escape the 'pressure to be perfect' when your
favorite celebrities have gone through changes that are inexplicable when
judging from past photos, idols being simply everywhere as stated in this article
pertaining to idol actors.
However, this is not always the case for Korean Pop Music (Kpop) groups with a
8
large fan base. Obviously, their songs will last in the music charts if their fan base
are always requesting and playing it for almost every day. A perfect example for
this is Psy’s Gangnam Style, which gathered 1.8 billion views in YouTube. With
this kind of numbers, most K-poppers will ensure that their songs can at least be
on the list for a longer time.
Furthermore, visual experience is an included part of Korean Pop Music (Kpop),
which includes the physical appearance as well as the clothes of the artists.
Classy music videos and visuals concerts are also important factors to the overall
visual experience of most of the Kpop artists.
Most of the Kpop music videos are frequently colorful, extravagant, vivid and
colorful. Also, compared with the conventional pop music videos, some of the
Kpop videos are inconceivable and shocking.
Personally speaking, their music videos are entertaining and I really have a lot of
fun listening and watching their videos. This factor is a big break for all Korean
artists today, as their videos can attract thousands of fans around the world. That
is why, as stated above, most of their videos are done vividly and colorful to
capture the attention of its viewers and listeners (2018).
Because of the popularity of k-pop group and artists, k-pop fandom among
Filipino teens become also widespread, they influenced most of the Filipino teens
days with funky hair style (and those huge that almost cover their faces),
fashionable clothes, trendy shoes, coal eyeliners, eccentric shacks and the
bangs flip trademarks. Filipino teens imitate now their Idols look, how they move
act and everything that his/her k-pop Idol & k-pop fans imitate that too. There is
no doubt, k-pop fever is all over the Philippines, with its consistent sales of k-pop
albums and concerts tickets, Filipino is definitely invaded by Korean culture.
Even on the culture of the Korea they search about it, how they talk and their
language they imitate that also (Webbs, 2018).
Last January 19, 2013 more than 2,000 K-Pop fans as gathered for the
Dream K-pop fantasy concerts at the Mall of Asia, Filipino fans are really happy
9
seeing their k-pop Idols performing in front of them LIVE. Even the Aryana main
star “Ella Cruz” attends and watch the show. According to the interview about her
she is a fan of k-pop Girls Generation. We can observed teenagers, nowadays
that Filipino teenager Idolized artist with very fanatical, even when there is a
concert or for example Super junior who came from Korea to Philippines for the
concert, they desperately willing to see their Idol sing and not of fan of rich
people who would like to see the concert, even the lower economic participate
dragged to see the concert even though they are on the urge of economic
incompetence. They used their money in buying that ticket for the sake of their
being k-pop addict (Hyucham, 2012).

METHODOLOGY
RESEARCH DESIGN
The word "Design" means is a realization of a concept or idea into a
configuration, drawing, model, pattern, plan, and which help achieve the items
designated objective according to web finance (2018). According to a research
consultant, a qualitative research is a design to reveal a target audience's range
of behavior and the perceptions that drive it with reference to specific topics or
issues. In this qualitative research we used phenomenology research design
because according to smith (2008) phenomenology is the study of structures of
consciousness as experienced from the first-person point of view. We focused on
our participants lived experiences.
In this phenomenology study, our participant was come from Badas National
High School. This used non- probability sampling; non-probability sampling is a
random selection of subject (Edmond 2013 as cited by Baraceros 2016). The
type of non-probability sampling we have chosen was purposive or judgmental
where we choose people whom have surely correspond to the objectives of the
study. We choose people whom have surely live experiences about our topic
specifically for those who were obsessed on k-pop music.
This research will only involve 10 participants because we prefer to know
many about the explanations of those who were obsessed. Basically, this
participants studying at Badas National High School.
11
DATA ANALYSIS
After gathering the Badasian's opinions and reasons about the obsession on
k-pop, the next part is we analyzed the responses of the participants. In here, the
responses of the participants was put codes and group into its major themes.
After that, we the researchers analyzed, interpreted, and synthesized the
gathered data from the chosen participants.
DATA SOURCES
This selection contains the strategies as to how we gathered our data and
pieces of information where we conducted an interview to our chosen
participants regarding to our topic which is the fanatic’s revelations on k-pop
music obsessions.
Interview is a gathering of information to your participants (Easwaramoorthy,
2006). While observation is a technique on gathering data whereby the
researcher were personally watch, interact, or communicate with the subjects of
the research (Meng, 2012). In this study we conducted an unstructured interview.
In this type of interview the participants was answered our questions based on
what their personal think and feel about. We asked questions in our participants
and we applied the art of questioning enable to big-deep the participant’s
answers; our participants answered our questions base on what they have
experienced.
