Crossing borders

Undocumented immigration has been considered a problem for the United States for a

long time. At the same time they have become the solution for a lot of others.”Illegal

immigration continues to be a controversial and divisive topic” (Illegal Immigration).

Undocumented immigration is when people cross borders without legal documents. They travel

lots of miles in hard weather conditions and they don't usually eat for several days. They come

through the Mexico border, the Pacific Ocean or in different type of ways. “Some immigrants

also move to a foreign country to give their children a better life” (Illegal Immigrants). People

become immigrants trying to find a better way of life. This essay is about why people should

give better treatment to undocumented immigrants and why they should have the opportunity to

have legal status. They are considered criminals just for crossing a frontier, trying to have better

opportunities. The treatment of undocumented immigrants should change to provide them legal

status and a direct pathway to citizenship because many of them pay taxes, they contribute to the

economy and they perform jobs that others will not do.

In the United States everyone is supposed to pay taxes. “Unauthorized immigrants, in the

United States pay little or no taxes is far from correct” (Longley). They are the contribution that

all the people make when they work, they own business and purchase products in all different
Rodriguez 4

places and that money goes to the government. That money is used for things like social services,

food stamps, hospitals and other different type of services that the country provides.

Undocumented immigrants are a big part of the contribution, even though they do not have

papers. "People always, always point out that we do not pay taxes, which is a complete lie"

(Guerrero). That is what a lot of people think, but they are wrong and they do not realize it. They

have the ITIN that is the Individual Tax Identification Number is way that undocumented

immigrants can show that they are paying taxes and contribute to society like everyone else.

With the taxes that they pay, immigrants do not get the same benefits that other people have, and

the only reason is because they are not here legal but they also, contribute to it. A lot of studies

have proven that immigrants are one of the most biggest contributors in the country, but they do

not have the equal opportunity to services that everyone else has. A lot of people say that

undocumented immigrants are the people that most use it but, that is a lie they can use service

like police, or judicial systems and they do not have the opportunity to have food stamps or

Medicaid. “The 11.3 million unauthorized immigrants living the U.S. today contribute $11.64

billion in state and local taxes each year” (Estrada). Taxes are money that everyone has to pay to

provide better services. With more people paying, there will be more money to provide better

services.

The economy is important for every country and it is the people that contribute to it. The

economy depends on everything sense the things that are in the floor thru all in the sky. The

economy is what supports one country. “Some economists, and many business leaders, say that

the American economy depends on illegal workers” (Dennis). Undocumented immigrants

consume all types of products like everyone else. With more people consuming products, the
Rodriguez 5

economy also grows and the country can afford to give better services. “More immigrants, more

consumers”(Peri). Immigrants are one of the most helpful parts in the country. They give billions

of dollars per year in different things like taxes, IRS, etc. Also, if they had some type of

document that proves they are legal in the country the economy would have a great boom,

because a lot of people that cannot afford a lot of items or things could have the opportunity to

do it. So on, that would open a lot of different opportunities for them.

Americans and citizens of the country have dreams too. They would have to make it true

but most of the time money is what everyone needs to make it possible, and the way to have it is

working. Everyone wants to have the best job and wants to be paid well. “The Rasmussen

Reports survey found 51 percent of Americans believe they are competing for jobs against

immigrants living in the country without work permits” (Silva). However, undocumented

immigrants are the people that would do the same work and for less money. Taking away the

opportunity for them. American and other citizens are struggling to find jobs for the simple

reason that most jobs are taken or the pay is too low. “Immigrants diminish the job opportunities

of workers born in the United States”(Peri). Citizens can have whatever job they want for the

simple reason of being born a great country like a America. Another thing that people do not

realize is how much deportations cost Americans. “Each deportation conducted by ICE cost

taxpayers an average of $10,854 in fiscal 2016” (Blanco). That is billions of dollors that goes

into the trash, and only for not having a paper that says legal. With deportation, both sides lose:

one is not going to have a way to support their family and the other is going to lose consumers

and money. Everyone contributes to the economy in a lot of different ways, even if they are legal
Rodriguez 6

or not. Because every person that lives in this country forms a part of it, that is what makes it the

best country.

Undocumented immigrants would work in everything that is honoring its one of the

reason that most immigrants are field works or construction works. “In the eyes of their

advocates, they are families and workers, taking the jobs nobody else wants” (Yee).

Many people think that they are here because they want to take away other people

jobs and money. “Illegal immigrants tend to become employed in what is known as low skilled

jobs" (Illegal Immigration). They are on the high buildings risking their lives only for a few of

dollars to support their family knowing that one day they might not see them again. They work

more hours than Americans and work sunrise to sunset, only to try to give their family the best

they can - even if that means not seeing them. Also, they are field workers and that is a hard job

because they have to work under the hot sun, suffering for hours dehydrated and risking having

skin cancer. Something the way they recollect the thing is not the best they have to dig into dirt,

thorns or claim to reach the goodies that everyone has on the table. Immigrants would live

picking up first vegetable if is a staff and stable work they could even do that intel they die.

Those are the two most common work that undocumented immigrants. Also, they would keep

doing it because it is something that does not pay much, but is work that will always be there.

The reason why many people immigrate from their native country is to look for a better

life. “For many years, the United States opened its doors to welcome those seeking political and

religious freedom” (Arizaga). The work they have is very difficult and very low paying. In that

situation, it is very hard to prosper. So until undocumented immigrants can find the way out of

the economic problems, they have to go out and find the way out. Also, immigrants are running
Rodriguez 7

out of a lot of safe places because they are facing problems of organized crime, gun shootings

every day, death in the streets and other types of danger. They want to find better options for

their family and escape from the danger in their lives. Even if they are suffering through other

things, their lives would still be better in America instead of staying in their native land.
