Job Title: Latent Print Examiner

Salary: $17.41/Hour

The City of Fayetteville is currently recruiting for a Latent Print Examiner to perform difficult technical work in the collection, processing,
comparison, analysis and identification of friction ridge impressions and the collection and preservation of crime scene evidence; to perform analysis
of latent prints in connection with the investigation of crimes and provide technical guidance and training in latent print analysis. Testify about
findings in court.
Key Responsibilities:
1.Receive, process and analyze latent print evidence into the Latent Print Examiner's Office; enter information into the database.
2.Analyze, compare, examine and verify questioned friction ridge impressions with known impressions in accordance with established guidelines and
accepted best forensic practice, making appropriate conclusions regarding identification; prepare reports regarding findings/results.
3.Establish friction ridge identifications; sort, cross reference and file fingerprint cards and maintain related files.
4.Evaluate friction ridge impressions and make specific determinations regarding their value for analysis and comparison and/or entry into the State
Automated Fingerprint Identification System (SAFIS), the Regional Automated Fingerprint Identification System (SPEX) and/or the FBI's Integrated
Automated Fingerprint Identification System (IAFIS).
5.Respond to requests for information regarding latent print cases and those cases suitable for AFIS search.
6.Conduct examinations of latent prints, ten print arrest cards and/or penitentiary packs for local, state and federal agencies; provide expert opinion
on results and prepare formal reports of findings.
7.Provide expert testimony in both state and federal criminal court proceedings.
8.Provide technical advice on the proper handling of friction ridge evidence.
9.Organize and maintain files of latent print case reports, AFIS and other databases inquiries.
10.Disseminate reports and advise requesting officer of report results.
11.Assist in the development and interpretation of procedures for administration of AFIS
12.Prepare friction ridge evidence for court presentation and provide expert testimony in court proceedings.
13.Obtain known impressions of any applicant upon request; obtain major case impressions when required.
14.Order and maintain operational supplies of latent print section materials and equipment.
15.Collect and verify known impressions from victims or suspects.
16.Train Forensic Technicians and law enforcement officers in crime scene processing and latent print collection.
17.Operate and maintain a variety of photographic equipment including digital cameras, viewers and photographic software and other printing
equipment (AFIS).
18.Process special requests for latent impressions and related information.
19.Establish, maintain and update a variety of files and records; search files in identifying suspects; cooperate with other law enforcement agencies in
identification matters; prepare evidence for court presentation; testify in court as required.
20.Prepare reports and forward results to appropriate agencies.
21.Stay abreast of trends and innovations in the field of friction ridge analysis and attend meetings, conferences and seminars relating to forensic
science
22.Examine surfaces and process for latent impressions using various mediums and methods e.g. powders, chemicals, fuming, photographing with
alternate light source etc.
23.Ensure chain of custody for evidence is maintained.
24.Report safety hazards.
Minimum Qualifications:
Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the
knowledge and abilities would be:

Experience:
Two years of experience with a law enforcement agency or its equivalent in crime scene investigation and latent print processing.
Training:
Equivalent to an Associate's degree from an accredited college in Natural/Forensic Science, Criminal Justice or a related field. A Bachelor's degree is
preferred.

Licensing & Certification:

Required:
Latent Print Examiner Certificate by the International Association for Identification (IAI) is required within 18 months of meeting certification
eligibility. Possession of an appropriate valid driver's license and ability to maintain insurability.
