In order to create an effective instruction set, it is necessary to complete several usability tests on these
instructions. Three different students were selected to complete this usability test. The results of these tests
are summarized below.

Test Objectives
There were several different purposes to this test. The first was to uncover any errors or areas of
improvement in the instruction set. The second was to ensure that each step that required a visual aid had
one. Finally, the purpose of the test was also to reveal whether the instruction set provided the appropriate
amount of detail for the target audience.

Results
Areas of Strength
The greatest strength of the instruction set was the visual aids. Screenshots were provided for the majority of
the steps to ensure the user that they were following the instructions correctly. Also, any detail that couldn’t
be found in the instruction commands could be found in the visual aids.

Another strength was the straightforward and logical progression of the instructions. Although the website
itself was poorly designed and somewhat confusing, the step-by-step approach of the instructions allowed
users to navigate the site in a natural way.

Areas for Improvement

The greatest area that needed to be improved, where the users were asked to navigate to the “Frequently
Asked Questions” page. This page is found in a different drop down, and this provided some confusions for
users. During the test, however, users were able to address this problem by utilizing the screenshots. In order
to remediate this improvement, the instruction set was edited to include the location of the “Frequently
Asked Questions” on page 9.

Another area of improvement was editing the visual aids. The screenshots provided in the instruction set were
of the entire web browser, providing much too detail. By cropping these screenshots, the users were able to
focus on the needed detail within the visual aid.

Questionnaire
Three close ended questions were asked of the users after the usability test. The results of these were as
follows:
1) Did you find any errors in the instructions?
- All users unanimously agreed “No”
2) Did each step that needed a visual aid have one?
- All users unanimously agreed “Yes”
3) Did you feel that the instructions provided an appropriate amount of detail?
- The most common answer was “Yes” with one user answering “No”

Three open ended questions were also asked of the users after the test. The results of these were as follows:
1) What could be improved about the ease of following the instructions?
- The instructions were good as they were.
2) How could the visual aids be improved?
- Crop the screenshots to focus the attention of the user.
3) Which steps could be changed to provide more (or less) detail?
- Step 9. Give more information about where the FAQ page is located.

Recommendations
Based off of this feedback and the observations of the users during the usability tests, a few changes were
made to the instruction set. Firstly, the screenshots were cropped in order to focus the attention of the users.
Secondly, the location of the “Frequently Asked Questions” page was added to Step 9 for the convenience of
the users. A third adjustment was changing the color of the headings. This was adjusted to a dark green to
match the color scheme of the website.
