Border Health Issues

Script introducing our claims.

Health management is the prime focus of many cities to help get the community in a safe

running order. Many do not understand that even by keeping good hygiene can help your

community be safer. Have you ever thought about how secure your hygiene is? If we can correct

hygiene and make safe decision inclined to that is can help stop the spread of viruses and other

infections. UTEP has a moderately large population, it can be a gateway for viruses and infection

if we don’t take the right steps to prevent it. As simple as washing your hands more frequently

can make a dramatic difference. Many different inflictions can be passed by even a simple meet

and greet situations such has handshakes and other means of greetings.

The border between United states and Mexico has been a very large conflict to major cities. El

Paso is one of the main city’s bordering both countries and has encountered different conflicts.

Border health is one of the biggest subject that gets affected and is something that needs a lot

more attention. Is it possible that this can hurt the community and as well the university in the

area? This should be acknowledged by everyone because it affects us all in a whole. In the past

year according to Richardson (2017) there has been an increase by 6% of violence on the border,

not only this but health professionals have seen an increase in deceases that originates is from

deep Mexico and other countries. This can cause an outbreak that can be a serious health hazard

for El Paso, more regulation can help solve this and prevent others from encounter such

implications.

Border Health Issues Regarding Science.

Opportunities in education in the field of science for both regions would positively increase at a

rate that can be functional and sustainable, while being supported by both countries and without

problems along the border.

This creates research in the science field and through this we develop in the study of science

while education ourselves.

BHI (Border Health Issues) in the field of science helps develop on interest in community’s

health, based on lectures and oral presentations.

The Purpose of Border Health Issues in Our Community.

The purpose of Border Health Issues is to get inform about the country need and become aware

of the problems occurring in the border areas, to prevent negative outcomes such as diseases, and

economic distress.

Mexican health care has become a backbone for border community health and likely to Mexican

nation UTEP students. Accessibility, perception, and cost are factors influencing the current state

of medical care usage to both insured and uninsured border residents and UTEP students.

Introducing a cross culture program, a cross-culture program between the US and Mexico could

improve community health by increasing medical usage in the US for both first and second

generation Mexican residents.

A large factor that is currently negatively influencing local health is a lack of general health

knowledge. UTEP is predominantly Hispanic comprising of 77.4% of enrollment ethnicity. With

this in mind, change in El Paso and at UTEP must come from culturally competent behavior.

Culturally competent behavior is behavior that allows people to succeed cross-culturally.

Incorporating the break-down of cultural barriers into local programs aimed at local health

promotion could provide a boost to UTEP health.

The increase of disease and infections in Border regions henceforth UTEP.

How are UTEP students being affected by infectious diseases in the border?

(Speak on this including images)

Borders are located in the heart of two different countries with two different cultures. Some

countries could be developed and others undeveloped. In El Paso, Texas shared border with

Ciudad Juarez this is the case. The region along the border is called The Frontera. The University

of Texas at El Paso lies inside the Border region in fact, UTEP the campus itself is 1-5 miles

away from the Border.

Border cities could also be known as sister cities and they share the same quality of resources.

(E.g.,Air quality and water). The spread of diseases is caused by these following factors: Poor

sanitation systems, lack of clean drinking water, inadequate health care, poverty, and a high

population density contribute to the spread of infectious diseases.

Dr. Cecilia documents research on the increase of infectious diseases. Diseases and infections

that are present at borders are HIV, Tuberculosis, Obesity, Diabetes, Mosquitos, Hepatitis A,

Influenza, H1n1 and waterborne diseases. (Ballesteros, 2016) Not only through commuting and

interdependency of both countries increase the risk of disease but according to

If the border population henceforth UTEP are at risk of the transmission of infectious diseases

due to environmental factors like the sharing of same air quality, water quantity and quality,

animal control are issues of great concerns and the American medical association has

characterized U.S-Mexico border as a fertile ground for the development of infectious diseases.

As well as the students who live in Mexico study here or vice versa. The Raters of Hepatitis A

are 3 times higher than in any part of the country. A recent study documented that the prevalence

of Hepatitis A among women visiting prenatal clinics in EL Paso and Ciudad Juarez the 2 largest

sister municipalities was 96.1% and 75.8%. (Hemedes, 2003) In the United States in

unincorporated poor neighborhoods known as colonias which comprise around 300,000

households; have rates of salmonella and shigella infection, 4 times higher than in the rest of

United States. Tuberculosis (TB) is endemic on both sides of the border and cases of dengue,

leprosy and rabies have been also detected. Thus, with the enormous amount of infections in the

border and with little or no access of health care this only escalates the transmission of infections

and deaths.

Solution and Call for Action for UTEP.

The University of Texas at El Paso strategically recruited several outstanding virologists,

parasitologists and immunologists to foster infectious disease research. We seek to expand our

research program by recruiting new faculty members to provide coverage of key infectious

agents like hepatitis A, B, and C viruses and Mycobacterium tuberculosis. We also propose to

establish state-of-the art BSL-3 laboratories to facilitate investigation of critical human

pathogens and to expand our capabilities to handle potential class A and B bioterrorism agents,

particularly NIAID Category A, B, and C priority pathogens. With more projects and

maintaining a strong infrastructure to support this research and to promote our capacity for

scientific discovery and the translational research required to create the next generation of

therapeutics, vaccines, and diagnostics. UTEP is a step ahead and is trying to prevent and secure

Border Health however with the lack of investments in borders from the government if we

border residents do not speak up we will continue to be affected.

It is time for Borders to be taken seriously.
