Self-Evaluation

Many incoming college freshmen have issues editing papers and do not learn how to

properly edit papers in high school. Since I went to school in Bradford, I was given the

opportunity to take college classes this benefited me by letting me get classes in before I go to

college. Each student going to college is different and each one learns differently, either it be

from mistakes, from hands on learning, or being taught how to do something step by step. When

I looked back at old papers and essays, I have realized there are things I can change.

(I) In my writing, I use nothing words, and I have learned this year how many I use. I have

started backing off from them or substituting them this has broadened my vocabulary to a

more collegiate level. The less I use words such as Many, A lot, and Very.

(II) I have stated above that when I am writing I tend to make my sentences way to long, and

tend to drag them on and on. I have recently realized how much of a hassle that is when I

do my self-edits.

(III) When I am writing I feel I am decent at staying on topic but relating everything back

together can sometimes make my essays wordy and make it seem like I am switching

topics.

(IV) When I sit down to write the essays for this class, it takes me a while to be able to get the

words to start flowing but then they start flowing and I tend to forget about word count.
This has happened recently and I will have to go back to look at what paragraphs have

too much information, and cut them out so I can make word count.

(V) When I am writing with quotes, I forget to quote the sources, and forget to put it into my

work cited/bibliography at the end of my papers.

(VI) Sometimes I will wait until the last second to come up with a good title, because

appropriate is a strong character builder for the essay.

(VII) Also, I have come to realize that when I go to finish my introductory paragraph my thesis

isn't strong, when writing I forget how important that thesis statement is for the structure

of the essay.

(VIII) Punctuation, I have learned often I misuse common everyday ones that make or break the

structure of any sentence. I have learned from this class how to properly use them and

what to do to make sure everything flows.

(IX) Another mistake I have realized is I write I tend to forget my transition words that help

set the paragraphs up at a higher level.

(X) Lastly, I am terrible at explaining my examples instead restating the same sentence over

again. I have always been able to find good examples for my essays, but I feel as though I

just slap them into the essays and papers without properly explaining to the reader why

they are important and how they are related to the main topic.
