New America Media is excited to announce the launch of our seventh annual Education Fellowship for
Ethnic Media Journalists. This year’s fellowship will be focused on implementation of the federal
Common Core State Standards, and its impact on classrooms and communities in California. Funding
for this project comes from the California Education Policy Fund.
Fellows will participate in a one-day training, which will include: 1) a school site visit to observe what
Common Core looks like in the classroom and 2) a telebriefing on the Common Core.
Story Ideas: Fellows will be required to submit one story idea as they relate to Common Core no later
than one week following the training. Please send a summary of your idea of no more than two
paragraphs via email to NAM Education Editor Peter Schurmann pschurmann@newamericamedia.org
and to NAM LA Coordinator George White geowhite@ucla.edu.
Story completion: Each fellow will have one month following approval of their story pitch to complete
a reporting piece of no more than 1000 words in length. Stories must be submitted to NAM editors prior
to publication in fellows’ respective outlets and on the NAM home page.
Here are the requirements for the 2013 fellowship program. Please sign your name at the bottom of this

Following the school site visit, we will make our way to the offices of The California Endowment for
the second half of the training. (Please note free parking is available at TCE headquarters. Directions to
the location, as well as to the parking area can be found in the following section.) Fellows will gather at
Philippe’s Restaurant, located across the street from the TCE offices, for a luncheon discussion prior to
the telebriefing.
Directions to TCE Offices and parking: Located across the street from Philippe’s restaurant, on the
corner of Main, which becomes Bauchet and Alameda. Take Bauchet to the rear of the Endowment
building, all the way around back until you come to the very end of the road. The post office will be to
your right, as you make the winding turn via Bauchet. Stop at the parking kiosk.
When you arrive at the parking kiosk, let security know that you are meeting with Southern California
Grantmakers. You will then be given access to the parking area; parking is free. Proceed in to the front
lobby and let the security guard know that you are meeting with SCG. You will be given access to the
second floor. We are located in suite 230, just to the left of the elevators.

Peter Schurmann joined New America Media in 2010 after three years working as an editor with
Yonhap News Agency, South Korea’s state-run news service. Prior to covering education, Peter’s work
focused largely on international affairs in East Asia and the Korean community in the U.S. He joined
NAM’s Education Beat in 2012, and has since focused on issues relating to school finance, community
college and the Common Core. He is conversant in Korean and Chinese.
George White

George White is a journalist and author with expertise on policy issues related to education, health and
community development. White is co-author of Expect the Most – Provide the Best, a book that
examines the impact of expectations and innovation on academic achievement. Scholastic Inc. will
publish the book in 2014. He is also a contributor to A Call for Change, an anthology on education
reform published by Houghton Mifflin Harcourt in 2012. His other work on education issues has been
published by the Center for Educational Improvement.
Previously, White served as assistant director and editor at the UCLA Center for Communications and
Community, a media capacity-building institute funded by the Annie E. Casey Foundation.
The UCLA center closed in 2009 after completing its ten-year mission on behalf of the Casey
Foundation. He currently serves on the UCLA Communications Board, which oversees management of
student media.
Prior to his work at the UCLA center, White was a reporter for the Los Angeles Times. During his 11
years at the Times, he won a feature-writing award and was a member of reporting teams that won two
Pulitzer Prizes. In addition, his 1995 exposés on a Thai sweatshop slavery ring in El Monte, Ca. helped
prompt national reforms in the U.S. apparel and retail industries.

Kyndall Brown is the executive director of the California Mathematics Project (CMP), a statewide
network of professional development organizations that provide training to K-12 math teachers
statewide. Previously, he was director of the UCLA Mathematics Project (UCLAMP), a professional
development program for K-12 teachers. He also directed the UCLA Mathematics Project Common
Core Institute, which provided training on the new math standards to classroom teachers in 2011 and
2012. Some of Brown’s research focuses on how identity and culture impact the ways that African-
American students learn mathematics and the impact of professional development on teaching practices
and student achievement.

complex issues and inform public policy on education in California. Although she has covered a range
of stories, from paleoanthropology wars to the rise in public breastfeeding, education is her passion. The
schools beat is in her DNA, says Baron, who grew up in a family of teachers. Before coming to TOP-
Ed, she spent 12 years as morning host and education reporter at KQED Public Radio, was a Fellow at
UC Berkeley Law School's Chief Justice Institute on Race, Ethnicity and Diversity, and wrote about
schools that work for Edutopia, a project of the George Lucas Educational Foundation.
