Retarding effect

The presence of metallic cations such as Fe+2 (The latter two only at high alkalinity) has a
retarding effect. Lead (II) plays unique role in cyanidation, and there has been much confusion
regarding its effect on the rate of dissolution of gold. Besides the accelerating action already
described, some reports decribe a retarding effect. It can be concluded from those studies that
when Pb+2 is present in very small amounts as compared to the CN- ion, an accelerating effect
is observed, whereas when the Pb / CN ratio exceeds a certain value there is a retarding effect.
