It is good to get into the habit of assessing your own work. This will allow you have to a greater
awareness of your strengths and weaknesses and help you to focus your attention on specific areas.

Opening words/phrases to replace ‘Nowadays’

*Notice how the tense form changes here, as ‘recently’ implies a change from the past to the
present state. Using this form also shows a variation in your ability to use a range of
grammatical structures.

3. Identify phrases that can use more than one tense form.

4. Why is there a difference between the tense forms used with some of the opening phrases?

5. Select an opening word/phrase from each of the boxes (1 word – 7 words) and use it to replace

an opening phrase in one of your previous essays. Make sure to use the appropriate tense form.
