Technicolor TG389ac - Manual Configuration

.uk
Note: We recommend changes made to this router are performed by a computer using a Windows
operating system and connected via an Ethernet cable. Using a computer with a MAC operating
system or wireless device may cause issues and settings may not save correctly. If the router has
been previously configured using one of these devices it is best to factory reset the router before
continuing.

The following guide shows how to manually configure a Technicolor TG389ac router to work with
FTTP or external NTE.

It is recommended the router is first factory reset before following this guide. This can be achieved

.co
by holding a paperclip in the reset hole for 15 seconds, located on the rear of the unit. Please be
aware this router takes approximately 5 minutes to reboot.

Configure for DHCP

.uk
The default option is to configure the TG389ac using DHCP. This option is where the device you are
connecting to via the Ethernet WAN port is currently online and passing the WAN IP to your
TG389ac. The TG389ac therefore only requires DHCP to connect to the internet.

.co
DJ
You usually don’t need to make any changes here but you can enable IPv6 or VLAN if required.

Configure for PPPoE

.uk
This option is use when you need the TG389ac to authenticate via an NTE (e.g. an Openreach VDSL
modem). You will need to know the authentication username and password and may additionally
need to create VLAN.

.co

Enter the Username and Password require to authenticate with your ISP.

If you are connecting to FTTC via an Openreach VDSL modem enable VLAN and set it to 101. If you
are able to connect to the internet but unable to browse web pages you may want to set the MTU to
DJ
1458, however, 1492 or 1500 should be fine.

Advanced Settings
If you want to create your own public subnet click on the show advanced link at the top of the
window. This option is used if your ISP has provided you a block of WAN IP addresses.

You should already know the range of IP addresses your ISP has provided. The above shows a block
of 8 WAN IPs with the range 172.16.1.88/29. The first and last IP address in the range (172.16.1.88)
is always the Subnet ID. The last IP in the range is the Broadcast Address (172.16.1.95). These are

.uk
used by the ISP so not usable IPs.

The first usable IP (172.16.1.89) is known as the Gateway Address so enter it into the box provided.
A block of 8 IPs (i.e. a /29) will always have the Subnet Mask of 255.255.255.248 so select that from
the drop down menu.

.co
DJ
As you can see from the above the other usable WAN IPs are 172.16.1.90 to 172.16.1.94.
ck

Click on Close to complete the process.

If you wish to assign another device one of the IPs use the following:

IP Address: (one of the usable IPs)

Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.248
Gateway: Routers WAN IP (e.g. 172.16.1.89)
