1. Topic: Predicting Weather
Grade: 4
Date: May 4, 2018
2. Lesson Essential Question(s): How can we use the tools we have made to create a
weather report?
3. Standards:
ESS2.D: Weather and Climate
● Scientists record patterns of the weather across different times and areas so
that they can make predictions about what kind of weather might happen next.
4. Learning Objectives and Assessments:
Objectives Assessments
Students will be able to use what they Students will be preparing and
have learned and created throughout presenting a weather report on various
the unit to create their own weather topics for a specific region using
report and discuss different weather research and knowledge they have
patterns. acquired throughout the unit.
5. Materials:
- ChromeBooks
- Worksheets
- Pencils
- Markers
- Construction Paper
6. Pre-lesson assignments and/or prior knowledge:
- Students will understand how to use tools to help predict weather such as a
rain gauge, thermometer, anemometer, and hygrometer.
7. Introduction:
Day 1
0:00:00- 0:05:00
The instructor will begin by playing the weather unit theme song for the students. The
instructor will then pick a student out of the can to be the first weather person who
will report the weather, as well as temperature onto the bulletin board the instructors
had made previously. The instructor will also inform the students, that today the
weather reporter will also be reporting temperature. The instructor will then ask the
class to fill in the weather in their weather journals the instructors have provided.
8. Instructional Plan:
Day 1
0:05:00- 0:07:00
The instructor partners will inform the students: “For the next three days we will be
preparing a weather report to broadcast to your parents and guardians.” The
instructors will explain the jobs for each student group.
● Air Pressure Reporter: Finds the air pressure for the assigned city.
● Rain Reporter: Researches the precipitation for the assigned city.
● Wind Reporter: Measures the expected wind speed for the assigned city.
● Temperature Reporter: Measures the temperature for the assigned city.
● Humidity Reporter: Measures humidity for the assigned city.
Each job will be given a specific handout to work on for the three days.
Day 1
0:07:00- 0:55:00
The instructors will inform the groups that each weather report must have a script for
their show as well as an opening theme.
● The student will also need to name their weather report.
● The weather report should be no more than 5 minutes long.
● The instructor will hand out construction paper for the students to create an
advertisement sign for their weather station.
The instructors will allow the students the remainder of the class period to garner
their first observations as well as write a script for the weather report as well as an
opener such as a theme song or a chant.
Day 2
0:00:00- 0:10:00
The instructor will given the students time to discuss their findings with each other
member of the group, by adding in findings about temperature, humidity, wind, air
pressure, and rain to the script.
Day 3
0:00:00- 0:10:00
The instructor will give the students time to discuss their findings with each other
member of the group, by adding in findings about temperature, humidity, wind, and
rain to the script. The group will also make their predictions about what the weather
may be like in their assigned city for the month of May based on their predictions,
research, and observations.
Day 4
0:00:00- 0:15:00
The instructor will given the students time to rehearse their script and finish up their
PowerPoint before the guests come to the classroom.
0:15:00-0:55:00
The students will present their weather reports to the parents and guardians.
❏ Differentiation:
❏ Students who are struggling will be able to use their group members as
additional resources.
❏ Groups that finish early can practice their weather report, and then look
into predicting the weather for Sunday, May 6 as well.
❏ Assigned jobs will be based on level of difficulty.
❏ Questions:
❏ How do tools work to predict weather?
❏ How do we use measuring tools to measure weather patterns?
❏ How does the climate and weather differ in different areas of the
country?
❏ How can we read charts to determine data?
❏ Transitions:
❏ Students will be working with the tools that they have made in previous
lessons.
❏ They will be permitted to move around the classroom to gather
information and work together at their leisure.
❏ Students will be working in groups on ChromeBooks to complete the
assignment.
❏ Classroom Management:
❏ Students will be allowed to work with their partners and collaborate
with their work and ideas. If students become too loud, the instructor
will ask them to speak softer to each other
❏ Students who receive multiple behavioral infractions will not be
permitted to participate on the final presentation day.
