FrameStar PCR plates feature a two-component “binary“

design that combines the advantages of thin-walled
polypropylene wells for optimum heat transfer and a rigid
polycarbonate frame for thermal stability and precise
robotic handling.

Binary plate technology FrameStar advantages

FrameStar’s polypropylene wells provide optimal heat transfer
and an inert surface with low binding of nucleic acids, proteins
and other molecules. An advanced injection molding technology
enables the thickness of the well walls to be reduced for rapid
temperature equilibration and efficient cycling.
The wells are molded into a polycarbonate plate frame by a
special two-part molding process. Polycarbonate’s rigidity provides
superior mechanical and thermal stability and eliminates the
expansion and contraction associated with conventional one-piece
polypropylene PCR plates. Warping, thermal expansion and loss
of seal integrity are eliminated.

Improved sealing
FrameStar’s two-component plate technology significantly improves
seal integrity. How? During PCR, excessive thermal expansion/
contraction of standard one-piece polypropylene plates can
compromise the integrity of adhesive seals, particularly in wells
near the perimeter of the plate where these physical forces are at
their maximum. In contrast, the higher thermal stability of the
FrameStar polycarbonate frames resists expansion and contraction,
resulting in a reliable seal over all wells during cycling.
Fluorescence-based analysis
FrameStar plates exhibit negligible auto-fluorescence and won’t
interfere with fluorescence-based applications, such as qPCR.
Plates are available with white wells, whose reflective properties
maximize signal intensity and uniformity.
Reduced risk of cross-contamination
Raised rims around each well help prevent cross-contamination
between samples.

Rainin offers a wide range of sealing options for FrameStar plates:

General PCR plasticware
Our monolithic polypropylene PCR plates and cap strips are molded from virgin
polypropylene under clean room conditions and comply with the same stringent
QC requirements as our FrameStar line. The plates have black well markings
for easy sample locations and high transparency for improved sample visibility.
The well rims are raised to avoid cross contamination and to facilitate heat and
adhesive sealing. Cap strips are precision-molded for complete sealing, elimina-
ting evaporation.

Rainin offers a wide range of heat- and adhesive-sealing

materials in pre-cut sheets. All seals are certified free from
nuclease, pyrogen and human genomic DNA contamination.

Compared with conventional adhesive seals, heat seals

offer many benefits:
• Highly reliable with manual and semi-automated sealers
• No exposed adhesive
• Reduced contamination risk – seal is non-tacky at
room temperature
• No adhesion of dry samples to the film

Semi-automated, easy to use and reliable

With variable temperature and time settings, the TS2

thermal sealer produces a uniform seal on 96- and
384-well PCR plates, as well as a variety of other
plate types.
Precise time and temperature settings are easily
programmed with a few steps. The plate and seal are
placed on the plate holder within an open drawer on
the front of the heat sealer. Once the drawer is gently
pushed closed, the electronically-controlled sealing
process is initiated, eliminating the variability associa-
ted with manual heat sealing. A consistent seal is
made every time, regardless of the plate or seal type.

A pipette is made of a variety of mechanical parts. Like all
things mechanical, nothing lasts forever. Piston surfaces can
deteriorate over time, leading to premature seal failure and
pipette inaccuracy. Seals can leak after being exposed to rough
piston surfaces or to sample contamination. Shaft ends can
be worn over time, especially when high force or “banging” is
applied when mounting tips. Often, leakage is gradual and

Rainin’s PM Plus is a cost effective pipette service solution
Micrometer
appropriate for unregulated labs. PM Plus includes complete
preventive maintenance of your pipettes followed by a
verification check of the pipette's performance using precision
Mettler Toledo balances. Three measurements are made
at the 10% volume setting and accuracy and precision are
verified, then one measurement is made at 100% volume to
verify accuracy at the top end.

Pipette Accuracy and Precision
Accurate but not Precise Precise but not Accurate
Accuracy (Mean Error)
Accuracy, or mean error, is the amount by which the mean
value of a large set of replicate liquid measurements deviates
from the nominal value of the volume shown on the digital
display of the pipette. The specification given for each pipette
is the maximum allowable value for mean error. Mean error
may be expressed as shown in the equations below.
Accurate and Precise
Precision (Repeatability)
Precision is the numerical assessment of the random dispersion
of a number of replicate measurements, expressed as standard
deviation or coefficient of variation. In this publication, precision
refers to a “within-run” deviation, i.e. the standard deviation for
a series of measurements at the same volume setting, performed
at one location in a contiguous time period, with a new disposable
tip for each pipetting cycle. Standard deviation and coefficient of
variation may be expressed as shown in the equations below.
