President’s Report
From the club’s second ever tour of the UK in May/June to the emotional highs and lows of the recent finals
series; it’s certainly been a whirlwind 12 months at KCC with plenty to be proud of! For those of us who didn’t
manage to get on the flight to the UK, patrons of our new clubhouse TV Unit and social media group were treated
to some fantastic photos, scorebooks and stories of a tour that would surely be the envy of any cricket club going
around. It should come as little surprise that the club is already looking ahead to a potential 2020 UK Tour…just
as Dunky was recovering from organising the last one! Off the field during the season proper, the club enjoyed
plenty of highlights including a capacity crowd Quiz Night, a refreshed Golf Day (with new location and cooler
conditions) and two new sponsors coming on board (Nupipe + Engage & Grow). Our committee membership also
reached an impressive total of 14; thanks to every one of them for their contribution. This year’s Best Clubman
award was a fiercely contested one – just the way we want it! I want to make mention of a handful of people in
particular 1) 16/17 best clubman Ken Dunk for continuing to provide invaluable service; he purchased food, he
prepared food, he cooked food and he even captained a team into a Grand Final against the odds. 2) Andrew
Thorpe for purchasing all of our alcohol, soft drinks, chocolates, lollies and chips as well as coming in every
couple of days to drop the stock off and ensure the fridge was full. 3) David O’Reilly for marking the creases and
boundary lines at three different home grounds; it’s a big effort to move all that equipment and paint around! We
have decided to award this year’s Best Clubman to Kim Johnson for his commitment to being at training by 4:30
just about every Monday and Wednesday, controlling the nets and grumpy batsmen like a boss AND cooking the
BBQ on a regular basis.

On field, losing two Grand Final’s by under 15 runs and coming away from four without a premiership ensures
the weekend of March 24/25 2018 goes down as one of the toughest in KCC history, but the season as a whole
should be looked back on very fondly. We won over 60% of the matches we played and the only two sides that
didn’t make finals were in the hunt right up until the final round. This gave the place a very positive vibe and kept
the motivation levels high from go to woe. It was particularly exciting to watch our 1st Grade side pick themselves
up from a 6th place finish last year to finish 1st on the ladder by such a significant margin. The tireless work put in
by our captains and selection team (often on a Friday evening or Saturday morning) to find players each week
should be applauded. While most other PCA clubs have gone backwards and reduced their teams in the past 12
months, KCC has been able to buck the trend. Nick Venables, Don Boyes, David O’Reilly, Oliver Brennan, Scott
Clifton/Dale Evans/Ken Dunk & Wombat Fowler all put in 110% on game day to ensure the respective grades
were well managed.

In conclusion, thanks for your support during my 2nd year as President. While we face some challenges moving
forward in terms of the state of the PCA, participation levels in cricket more generally & player retention, I
believe KCC’s facilities, flexible payment structure, strong culture & healthy financial position are just some of the
things working in our favour. We will be prioritising marketing and facility upgrades in the lead up to next
season. I hope you’ll join the PCA’s Champion Club once again in 2018/19!

1st Grade – Veg – The one that got away
Cricket, my love-hate relationship. There is a reason I love this game so much and it is because it has
euphoric highs, dismal lows it really tests the human will and character but most of all it is a great team
sport mixed in with huge individual battles. It has it all.
I love this game in that it can change in the blink of the eye where you can feel beaten like we did in the
first session of the grand final. Then suddenly you can rally together as a team and take 8 wickets for 64
runs to give feel like you have a fighting chance.
I hate this game where a team that has had such a great season and deserves to enjoy the final victory
can come up just short. We really didn’t deserve that final result and it grinds my gears that there can be
so much uncertainty in the rules that we play by and particularly in a Grand Final, such a frustrating end
to the season.
Our loss also highlights one of the reasons I love this game in that on any given day a team or individual
can have a great game and swing the result. Sadly we were just on the receiving end of a team having a
great game and as much as we performed well it just wasn’t quite enough.
This season has been the one of the best seasons I have ever been a part of and definitely the most
enjoyable. I couldn’t ask anything more from such a great group of gentlemen and I am really looking
forward to next season where we will hopefully go one better.

4th Grade – Don Boyes – Headmaster’s Report
It was a pretty amazing run for the fourth grade crew this season making it all the way through to the big dance
only to trip over our own feet and come up a few runs short on the final day! But hey everyone gave it their best
shot and there was no shortage of highlights! Mal taking a screamer, catch of the season actually, at mid-off in the
one big mitt as he got parallel to the ground, I kid you not. And it was Pickles!! Tez almost matched this an hour
or so later with a one hander of his own off a Mal long hop! Deano taking 4 poles and crashing 20 runs a week
after he had barely been able to walk after the semi-final. Chillers making a sublime 44 before being strangled
down the leg-side…. Tragic! In the end, it really was a nail biting finish, tense and full of drama!

The first half of the season was not exactly consistent, some great wins amongst a couple of ordinary loses. Hey
beating Leederville twice before Christmas can never be a bad thing. But it was in the new year that the team
really hit some form. A close loss to AusInd was followed by a couple of excellent wins against Carlisle and
Floreat interspersed with two outrights that really boosted our points tally and saw us finish the season firmly
entrenched in third spot.

The semi-final against AusInd (at home if you don’t mind) followed a typical finals script. Lose toss, get sent in
and eke out a score of 195. Then put opposition under huge pressure the next day and restrict them to just 135!
Real team effort with highlights from Frosty 39, Matty 27*, A Marr 3/0 in the one over and two wickets a piece to
L Marr, Tez and Mal. An excellent win.

So here then are a few other individual highlights that occurred this year and some stats.
Frosty – Belligerent right hand opening bat and first slip fieldsman. Never short of a word to share with the
opposition especially if your name is Pickles! Took a snorter at first slip in GF. Also prone to injury, managing to
do a hammy crossing the road going to work and missing a game!
Mal – Became a genuine all-rounder in the team as the season went on – opened the batting, bowled off spin and
now known as the claw after a couple of impressive one handers.
Huw Lock – Steady year in the middle order with the promise of more runs to come next season. Highest score of
54. Doesn’t mind a hurl at the wicket just quietly – being closely mentored by Tez.
A Marr – The wand didn’t work too well this year and is going back to the workshop for some adjusting. But was
back to his best with his bowling collecting 26 wickets, including a stunning over in the SF that turned the game
on its head.
Sir Richard – Joined us in the second half of the season and makes batting look ridiculously easy. Has an appetite
for batting and one suspects could be a very useful addition to KCC in seasons to come.
Tez – Another good season from the all rounder. Would have liked a few more runs in the middle order, but had
his moments with the bat. Most notably scoring a season high of 35 against AusInd peppered with 4 sixes! Ever
reliable with the ball taking 20 wickets & forever on the prowl for a runout.
Matty O – Our very own longstop in 4s. Did a super job behind the stumps taking his fair share of quality snares.
Always up for a chat with whoever wants to listen. Batting was a bit thin – but has fond memories of depositing
John Baker back over his head.
L Marr – Another solid season with the ball taking 16 wickets. Developing into a quality cricketer who has plenty
to offer. Has a solid defence when batting and will no doubt contribute plenty of runs in the future.
Deano – Enjoyed a top season with the ball taking 27 wickets all up. Bamboozled more than a few bats with his
swing and accuracy. His 4 wickets and 20 runs in the GF was simply outstanding.
G Rees – Settled into 4s very nicely and produced some excellent spells across the season. A consistent wicket
taker with his into the wind wobblers - 19 wickets @ 10.32. Now looking for a batsman to hang around with him
so he can score a few runs.
Hurls – Handy right arm bowler who collected a few quality poles. Elegant left hand bat who just finds a way to
get out. Will no doubt enjoy the wickets back home and will be a loss for KCC.
Raups – Left arm tweaker who had his season rudely interrupted by a broken hand! Will be back better than ever
in 18/19.
L Broun – New player at the club who arrived as a bowler…but impressed as an opening bat. Had a good finish to
the season with both bat & ball and will surely be a player to watch next season.
Scaf – Simply used the 4s has a stepping stone through to the ones from sixes! Hit some awesome form at the
right time of the year. Nice to have even just for a couple of games.
Woodsy – Played the first half of the season in 4s before being poached for 1s. Played a couple of super knocks
and deserved the promotion. Just needs to put away the slog sweep against the leggie!
Many thanks to the other players who spent time in 4s – Guerts, Dolz, Thorpey, Jonesy, Arkell, Wilson, Ando,
Forte, Spiers, Jedhi & Munish.
An enjoyable year at the Yuppers. Thanks to the Pres and other team captains for their time and effort. Maybe 4
winning GF teams in 2018/19!
5th Grade – David O’Reilly – Time to Declare
The season started out with a fairly different list than what we finished with. Most the round 1 players did well
moving on and playing in grand finals, so it wasn’t surprising we started off with a win. Big Mal showing the way
against Coolbinia with the ball snaring 4/38 from his 8 overs and all five other bowlers used getting a wicket. 186
to chase. Not a great start as Mal didn’t follow up his bowling form with the bat, however a recovery was at hand
as James and Leighton took it to 72 before the Pres went for 27 and Leighton following not long after for 37.
Olofssen 35 and Frosty 37 provided another handy partnership before O’Connell 23 guided the innings home
with the tail for a narrow win.

Game 2 saw us sent in by Leederville and the Helliwell/Wehipeihana opening partnership was consistent if
nothing else, Mal taking a very prominent position in the race for the Duck Award. Leighton joined James (20)
and progressed the score to 78. Leighton, a well made 59 and Ryan Wilson 35 were the other main contributors
to get us to what we thought could have been a competitive 7/162.
Looked even more competitive with Byron running one of the openers out 1/4. Unfortunately their no. 3 wasn’t
too intimidated by our snarling attack and belted 80 before being one of three Marlborough stumping to go with
two catches. Score passed in the 27th over. A little deflating.

Round 3 saw the third captain for the year. Not surprisingly he bowled a little more as captain and returned 5/24
with most Mt Lawley batsmen appearing pretty happy to get out to pus. Hitting the pitch a bit harder were Reesy
and Campbell taking 2/32 apiece. 124 the target.
Helliwell once more saw the score up to a reasonable level before departing for 38. Leighton again a contributor
with 22 before getting the first of a couple of dodgy LBs. Rhys Jones saw us past their score with 18. They had
another bat and at 2/5 we got a tad excited however that soon dissipated, to the desperation point – Helliwell 1
over for the season 0/18.

Bayswater travelled to Gwelup and won the toss and batted. No significant partnerships until the 10th wicket but
plenty of starts got them to 197. R Jones among the wickets 4/43. New opening partnership Helliwell (24) and
Johnson (21) got us off to a good start and Brad Smith (51) and Wow Jones (34) got us in a position to win
however the captain panicked and couldn’t stay with a much improved Nathan Jones (11no)’– short by 4 runs.
Stirling visited in the next game and never got going after winning the toss 98 off 31.4. Again Reesy and Campbell
getting similar figures 3/18 and 3/16 respectively. The objective was never beyond us Helliwell 41, Ryan Wilson
24 the main drivers – 4/107 in 21st over.

Three games in a row at Gwelup didn’t help our batting against Canning Vale. The consistent Johnson, Helliwell
and Marlborough the only ones to pas double figures (with the notable exception top scoring extras 24). All out
97 in 33 overs. However it did prompt our best bowling effort to date. Rees and Campbell each 8 overs 1/12.
Then your’s truly 7-1-12, Brad Smith 6-2-8 and the mercurial Sacha Daniel 5.5-5-15 restricted the fancied CV to
82 off 36 overs. Extras (21) also their top scorer. Good win.

A trip to meet the lowly Coolbinia was next. Chock full over overconfidence we rampaged our way to 6/179
(Marlborough 50 and plenty of support) off 60 overs when the captain inexplicably called a close to the innings
(what a dickhead) looking to maximise the points from the game. A few early wickets in the first week the goal –
not to be. Former KCC player Mick Peter who has played for 25 years made only his 3rd career 50 and all time top
score of 70 to make me look silly and they passed us comfortably. Also making me look silly was new boy Vikas
Rana who bowled with some left arm expensive venom before suggesting the slow bowling he had seen from his
teammates wasn’t all that impressive and when it was too late he came off the short run up and took 5 for bugger
all. Notable fielding K Johnson 2 catches for the third game in a row plus a sensational run out that I couldn’t
describe in this limited platform – ask him about it.

Round 8 v Ascot - Nothing here, move on.

Off to Bayswater for a “must win”. Another dodgy coin and the home team batted on the fastest outfield in the
comp. Must have been reasonable bowling, 7 extras, all legbyes. However they managed 5/171 (4 bowled, 1
LBW) from their 40. Campbell the only multiple with 2/37. The seriously injured Johnson recovered in time to
bat on the tarmac. Fairly steady batting effort with plenty of starts. Vikas the star with a belligerent 65 with
recruit Toby Dawson (17no) showing he had played at higher levels steering the victory in with a couple of overs
up our sleeve.

Long trip to Canning Vale. From the fastest outfield to the slowest. We lost the toss and they put us in, probably
not flattering. The reliable opening pair couldn’t do it again, Kimbo has a good story to go with his duck. Leighton
“The Wall” batted extremely patiently against good bowling for an excellent 54 (he has a story about his
dismissal as well). Nathan Jones also batted with some unexpected maturity, grinding out 17 which was a
significant factor aiding Byron(28no) and Campbell(11no) to post an unconquered 49 for the 9th wicket. 9/169
off our 75. Everyone bowled tightly with minimal success, not in any way assisted by having to defend our total
with just the 10 players. Couldn’t contain them and we missed out.

A spot in the four would require a good run home and our next test was against the much improved Mt Lawley.
They called correctly and it didn’t look good at 0/85 before Rhys threw down the stumps, a wicket that slowed
them down a bit. Experience came to the fore with Clint Palmer 2/15 and D O’Reilly 3/33 off their 8 contained
them to 9/177. Zotti had a clean sheet and is also credited with an unassisted run out, but I can’t remember it.
The chase got underway with another steady opening stand of 27 but too many cheap wickets in the middle
order made it impossible for Clint (27no) to get us close, 9/138.

Now we have to win every game to get a finals berth. A trip to play struggling Stirling was an opportunity to
boost points. In hindsight it would have been a good toss to lose and we found ourselves at the crease. No failures
– Johnson 33, Helliwell 42, Hurley 17, Wilson 21, Zotti 29no and a swashbuckling maiden 50 (56no) by Byron
Dillon allowed Declaration Dave to do his thing at 4/221. An early wicket to Rhys made everything look rosy.
Unfortunately some pretty tight bowling Rhys 8-2-8, Lachy Broun 8-3-7, Nathan Jones 16-2-22 couldn’t penetrate
enough to stop them just creeping past the follow-on. Another spectacular run out –this time Campbell threw the
stumps down after a couple of practices.

A bigger challenge this 2 day game with traditional rivals Leederville at Gwelup. Toss won and bright start didn’t
persist and 2/25 didn’t bode well – enter Leighton and Wow. Score proceeded at a predictable pace until
Leighton was dismissed for 44. Byron’s new found form got him another 27. All the while Warren kept things
steady at one end scoring 68 and taking the team score from 25 to 172, with an end total of 9/183. Batted out the
overs but was it enough? Plenty of early breakthroughs to have them 4/29 including an interesting over against
the bloke that won our first encounter with them. Campbell got belted for 6 over cover to get off the mark, then

6th Grade – Ollie Brennan – Allahu Akbar!
The Injured, The Misfits and the 30 somethings: “We’re all just a little bit fat”

“Sorry fellas, he said he only wants to play 6th grade, coz he said you’re team is just full of muppets” was tossed
around selections as the staple war cry from the first round. It lasted about 8 weeks before the jig was up, but by
then 6th grade had 6 wins under the belt and was a strong team to contend with in the PCA.

Whether the allure of playing with such a handsome captain or the ragtag bunch of misfits was the case, there
must have been some truth to my war cry as 44 players had been selected over the season, all playing their part in
our road to the finals.

It is worth acknowledging that despite 6th grade easily being the most athletic, dynamic and focussed outfit in the
club (including our routine 54 second “if you can be bothered” stretching regime and 0 warm up lap policy), we did
suffer some injuries including in alphabetical order:

Beck, Nathan: Heart Muscle: Apparently this is connected to the calf muscle, as he sprained it early on and had to
field in slips all season. Luckily, he came good for the one week of his military physical…….
Brennan, Oliver: Red eyes, sniffles, bottom lip: Career chronic allergy to making 50 runs in one innings
Garner, David: R) Calf: Pulled it in the week before the grand final moving Atlas Stones around his backyard
Guerts, Ben: Jaw: Sprained his jaw spitting the dummy (which has been recently spotted orbiting Pluto) after
being dragged from bowling
Hattingh, Luke: Spinal: Had a spinal cord injury in round 2, on 81 runs off about the same number of balls as he
approached his maiden century
Raupi, Andrew: Hand: It is unclear whether it was sustained dropping a catch or rubbing one out in the shower,
but he missed a few weeks
Rowe, David: RSI: Injured the scorers by getting them to repeatedly put dots and zeros in the scorebook
Scafidi, John: Back: Sprained, picking up a tim-tam

Whilst we had a large number of players over the season, we did have some mainstays and milestones including…..
8th Grade – Scott Clifton – The Ranga Review
Well another great season has passed with many highs, lows and "swear jar Dale!"

Congratulations to 1st, 4th, 6th grades and my boys in 8th grade for making it to the big grand final. Unlucky that
none of us got the results we wanted but better luck to all grades next year.

I would like to thank all my team mates for their help and support and more so putting up with me for a 3rd year
running. A special mention to Ken Dunk for helping skipper in my absence and for another year of useful
knowledge when we finally managed to play together. Also for being a top bloke, just ask him. And as weird as it
sounds, thanks to Zotti for being the guy who the team took their anger and frustration out at because his mouth
(and arse) wouldn’t stop running on and off the field and for giving us a laugh when he insisted that the pad is
mightier than the bat.

Hopefully this season the boys have had enough of me saying the off stump is the other side of the wicket and the
almost regular innings chorus of "shut up Dale, shut up Zotti".

I enjoyed playing with you all regardless of results at the end of the day. Thank you for all helping when asked and
for all the laughs and memories this season.

Best of luck during the off season and even more for the start of the new.
9th Grade – Wombat Fowler – Wombat Waste
First thing, I would like to thank all the guys who played long side me, thanks for a good year as my first year being
captain you all made it easier.
I enjoyed playing every game with you great guys the wins the losses and the drink's after the game, I look forward
to seeing you all next season to take a flag.

Paul Schramm: I would like to thank Paul for being my Vice Captain and getting the gear and being on time every
game. Thanks to Paul for opening the batting scoring 300 runs and taking 16 wickets, 6 catches had a great
season...
Duncan Lodge: Always kept me worrying that I might have to go behind the stumps, opening at number 3 he had
a good season with the bat scoring 225 runs and kept behind the stumps beautifully...
Darren Cunnane: What I can say about Darren he was outstanding with the bat all year through scoring a big 379
runs, and coming on when needed to take some quick wickets getting 7 wickets...
Thilina Ranaweera: Coming in as my hitter on a game that we thought was going to be a big loss and making a big
75 runs helped us win that game, scoring 173 runs for the season, and taking 19 wickets and taking the balling
trophy for 9th grade
Liam Noonan: Coming in as his first year with the club looking good in his whites when needed he would hold an
end up highest score of 55 against Bayswater, scoring 101 runs 3 catches had a good year hope to see him next
season...
Cory Fowler: Having less opportunity to bat this year with his new look/style with his bat doing ok job at when
needed this year scoring 88 runs, opening the balling this year done a good job should of had more wickets if his
side could catch getting 11 wickets this year, taking 8 catches a good effort for the year...
David Wheeler: No matter where he is on the field the ball seemed to follow him and didn't let much pass him
always a great fielder, scoring his highest score for the club 18 runs, improving every year...
Clint Fell: Doing a good job fielding all year and tried hard with the bat, leaving the club for couple of years hope to
see him back doing a good job for us again...
Marc Puttins: Playing every second week making a contribution with the bat and ball when needed always good
to have in the field scoring 58 runs, taking 4 for 31 in a game thanks for the effort...

Also like to thank all the young fellas for putting in a great effort when called upon thanks Xavier Cunnane, Rory
Noonan, Krish Joshi, thanks for the year hopefully see you all next season.

A big thanks to Carl Evans for filling in for the first 4 games before he went for a dive and hurt his knee and was out
for the season. (don't dive in 9th Grade)

Lust but not least thanks to Gerhard May for filling in for the lust game and thanks to all theater guys that played
with me all year...
