‘This letter is in response to your Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and Agency for Toxic
Substances and Disease Registry (CDC/ATSDR) Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request of November
10, 2017, for:
4. Internal inventories of the biospecimens identified by the CDC that were generated as part
of either the Tuskegee Study or the Guatemala Study. More specifically. we request internal
summaries that detail the numbers and types of biospecimens in storage that were collected
as part of the Tuskegee Study or Guatemala Study.
2. Internal summaries that describe and/or enumerate Tuskegee Study or Guatemala Study
biospecimens prepared by the Division of Laboratory Systems as part of the CDC and
‘Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR) Specimen Packaging,
Inventory, and Repository (CASPIR).
3, Any documents that apply to the reevaluation, review, retention, or destruction of any
biospecimens collected as part of the Tuskegee Study or Guatemala Study.
4. Any emails or correspondence related to the ongoing retention, secondary research, or
destruction or disposition of biospecimens collected as part of the Tuskegee Study or
Guatemala Study.
Date Range for Record Search: From 1/1/1932 To 1/1/1972,
‘A search of our records failed to reveal any documents pertaining to your request. The CASPIR samples are
‘maintained in an electronic sample inventory management system. The system was searched using each of
the following terms, one at a time: Tuskegee, Guatemala, STD, syphilis, Negro, Macon County, Alabama,
and autopsy. All searches yielded zero matching results, Similarly, there were also no records located for
Items #3 and #4 of your request.
