Armus, Teo.

“LGBTQ Advocates Say Judge's Block on Transgender Military Ban 'a Very Big

Step'.” NBCNews.com, NBCUniversal News Group, 31 Oct. 2017,

www.nbcnews.com/feature/nbc-out/lgbtq-groups-celebrate-judge-s-block-transgender-

military-ban-n815841.

I used this source to gather information and opinion of the minority group with regard to the
breaking of the LGBTQ+ community’s barrier in the United States’ military. This source was
very informative of the impact of this issue on Americans and how big of a ‘step’ towards
equality between heterosexual and homosexual individuals.

Britannica, The Editors of Encyclopaedia. “Obergefell v. Hodges.” Encyclopædia Britannica,

Encyclopædia Britannica, Inc., 28 Nov. 2016, www.britannica.com/event/Obergefell-v-

Hodges.

I used this source to gather background information about the specifics and importance of this
case (Obergefell vs. Hodges) with regard to the successful legalization of gay marriage. It was
very informative to see this case and it was interesting to see that this really helped push for
legalization of gay marriage.

Communityelf. “Women and LGBT in the Military.” Dignity & Respect, Dignity & Respect, 9

Feb. 2017, dignityandrespect.org/women-lgbt-military/.

I used this source to gather perspective of the minority groups. This source really helped me see
the significance of this achievement and its impact on the community. This was rather
informative research to ‘get a feel’ for how this impacted other people in order to provide an
unbiased approach to the topic.

Georgetown University. “Timeline of Legalization of Same-Sex Marriage.” Georgetown Law

Library Guides, Georgetown University, 20 Apr. 2018,

guides.ll.georgetown.edu/c.php?g=592919&p=4182201.
This source really helped me distinguish the major and minor events of the legalization of gay
marriage and helped me boil down the cause to a very simplistic event to help my classmates to
better understand what really impacted this, instead of them just glossing over a three page
summary and not remembering anything that was written.

Hitlin, Paul. “'We the People': Five Years of Online Petitions.” Pew Research Center: Internet,

Science & Tech, Pew Research Center, 28 Dec. 2016,

www.pewinternet.org/2016/12/28/we-the-people-five-years-of-online-petitions/.

I used this source to gather statistical information on the minority opinions on heterosexism’s
potential current and future hold on the US. This really helped me provide a well rounded
approach to the topic because the information covered a lot of different topics and achievements
and helped me decide which ones to choose.

Human Rights Campaign. “What Does the Bible Say About Homosexuality?” Human Rights

Campaign, Human Rights Campaign, www.hrc.org/resources/what-does-the-bible-say-

about-homosexuality.

I used this interview to help establish viewpoints of the majority group and help myself and my
classmates understand how religious interpretations may have impacted American social stigmas
to create heterosexism.

Johnson, Jeh, and Admiral Paul Zukunft. “Transgender Policy.” United States Coast Guard,

United States Coast Guard, 30 June 2016, www.dcms.uscg.mil/Our-

Organization/Assistant-Commandant-for-Human-Resources-CG-1/Reserve-and-Military-

Personnel-CG-13/Military-Personnel/Transgender-Policy/.

I used this source to provide factual statements regarding the United State Military's policy on
transgender service. This helped demonstrate the efforts of the United States’ Military to include
and assist LGBTQ+ individuals in service.
McBride, Brian. “Four Cases That Paved The Way for Marriage Equality.” Human Rights Campaign,

Human Rights Campaign, 26 June 2017, www.hrc.org/blog/four-cases-that-paved-the-way-

for-marriage-equality-and-a-reminder-of-the-w.

I used this source to help establish the major events in the legalization of gay marriage. It really
helped to see a set of four cases so I could more easily choose which one to focus on to avoid just
throwing cases at my classmates and having them forget or mixing up everything I tried to teach
them.

Merriam-Webster. “Heterosexism.” Merriam-Webster, Merriam-Webster, www.merriam-

webster.com/dictionary/heterosexism.

I used the dictionary to provide a literal definition for heterosexism to introduce the topic and
facilitate further elaboration on it.

Pew Research Center. “A Survey of LGBT Americans.” Pew Research Center's Social &

Demographic Trends Project, Pew Research Center, 13 June 2013,

www.pewsocialtrends.org/2013/06/13/a-survey-of-lgbt-americans/.

I used this source to gather statistical information on the minority and majority opinions on
heterosexism’s potential future hold on the US. This really helped me provide an unbiased
approach to the topic because the surveys were of both heterosexual and homosexual individuals.

Simon, Stacy. “Breaking Down Health Care Barriers for LGBT Community.” American Cancer

Society, American Cancer Society, 1 June 2017, www.cancer.org/latest-news/breaking-

down-health-care-barriers-for-lgbt-community.html.

I used this article to provide facts for the existing gap in health care effectiveness or availability
between members of the LGBTQ+ community and those of the heterosexual one. It was really
eye opening to see the indirect impact of what happened as a result of lacking legalization of gay
marriage in the healthcare system.
St. Amand, Jason. “Studies Show Openly Gay Military Has No Negative Impact, Here or in

Israel.” Ragemonthly, Ragemonthly, 13 Sept. 2012,

www.ragemonthly.com/2012/09/13/studies-show-openly-gay-military-has-no-negative-

impact-here-or-in-israel/.

I used this article to provide a background for the previous ‘dont ask, don’t tell’ policy so I could
properly elaborate on its negative impact on the LGBTQ+ community.

Terrell, Connie. “Opening Channels That Enable Transgender Members to Serve.” All Hands,

Coast Guard All Hands, 30 June 2017,

allhands.coastguard.dodlive.mil/2017/06/30/breaking-the-ice-opening-channels-that-

enable-transgender-members-to-serve/

I used this article to provide background information as well as gather some ideas for statements
to quote to demonstrate the efforts of the Military. I also used this source to provide background
information of viewpoints of the majority group so I could accurately represent the topic.
