Course Description:
This course will provide the non-health major (and specifically early childhood, childhood
education and special education majors) with the basic skills and knowledge necessary to work
in the area of health education at the elementary/middle school level. Meets SED requirements
for learning standards in health; alcohol, tobacco, and other drug use; safety education; and
abduction prevention.

Course Objectives: Upon completion of the course students will:
1. Develop an awareness of contemporary health issues of importance to individuals working
with the school-aged child.
2. Understand national and international public health and safety issues.
3. Understand health facts, principles, and family and community health for school aged
children.
4. Establish and monitor personal and family health goals.
5. Identify reliable sources of health education information resource materials and increase
health literacy skills so as to make appropriate health related decisions.
6. Examine the relationship between personal behavior and health status of the individual and
the community.
7. Develop an awareness of the importance of health and health education in improving the
quality of life.
8. Utilize the state and national learning standards for health education in developing learning
activities for the school aged child.
9. Identify state and national health education curricula for the school aged child.
10. Discuss the impact of culture, heritage, socioeconomic level, personal health and safety,
nutrition and factors in the home, school and community on the school-aged child’s readiness
to learn.
11. Identify factors necessary for creating a safe and nurturing classroom environment that is free
of violence, substance use, and where students show respect for others.
12. Utilize strategies for preventing alcohol, tobacco and other drug use and abuse.
13. Understand preventive physical and mental health measures, including proper diet, nutrition,
exercise, risk avoidance and stress reduction.
14. Provide instruction for the purpose of preventing child abduction.

Course Grade is based on quizzes, assignments, and a final project.

QUIZZES:
There are 14 quizzes. 10 points for each quiz.
Questions are multiple choice and come from the textbook and PPTs.
Quizzes are not cumulative and can be completed any time throughout the course, however,
recommendation is to complete the quiz with the other assignments.

There are nine (9) question and answer response assignments. Ten points (10) for each

relating to the reading(s). The question you create needs to be open-ended and at a synthesis,
analysis, and/or evaluation level. Your response will be in the form of 10 bullet point statements
(a 2-4 sentence response for each statement) accompanied by an APA citation from the source
where the statement was generated. Of the 10 bullet point statements, three (3) of the bullet
points need to be complemented by a relatable experience. This will be an additional 2-4
sentences. One reference can be the text the others need to be valid and reliable source. Please
cite accordingly using APA!!!! The idea is to take the information from the reading(s), analyze

response will be approximately one and a half to two pages. Proper heading includes: Name,

FINAL PROJECT: (40 POINTS)


Create an artifact that provides your interpretation of what you have learned from the class. Your
options are a video, a skit, a graphic organizer with annotations, or another option that is
presented and approved. The objective is to conceptualize what has been learned and how the
content and skill sets learned from this course are meaningful and purposeful. Refer to the
learning module for the rubric. (40 points)
