Instructions:

equations, shear and moment diagrams, calculation of normal, shear and bending stress,
calculation of strain and deformation, deflection equation and other related contents.

v. References – textbook, journals, technical reports

PROBLEM:
A steel pipe with 300 mm outer diameter and thickness of 75 mm is to be lifted while maintaining
good balance (horizontally) throughout the process. For this purpose, two rigid yoke is attached
to the pipe with 3.5m distance as shown in the Figure 1 below. Next, two cables with 3 m length
is used to connect both yokes to a single point A.
a) Determine the maximum normal stress and maximum shear stress of the steel pipe.
b) Determine the maximum deflection and the position where it will occur.
c) Define two methods to minimise the deflection in the steel pipe in terms of the design
parameter (for example in relation to the diameter, thickness, etc)
d) Suggest the most suitable parameter and material to be used as the cable. Justify your
answer. (Please include and highlight the official standard (table) inside your report).
