2018 Surface Design Show

PEFC-CERTIFIED, cross laminated timber
(CLT) is at the heart of a project which was
featured in the latest series of Channel 4’s
Grand Designs. The County Down Barn is
a contemporary take on a traditional barn
conversion. It is formed of a one-storey CLT

structure installed above a restored stone
agricultural building. Built on a limited budget
and timescale and located on a tight site with
stunning views across the Mourne Hills of
County Down, architect Micah Jones used
a complementary material palette of CLT,
stone and concrete to produce an elegant, yet
comfortable and robust family home.

There were several reasons CLT was specified
including the material’s excellent thermal and
airtightness performance – a major benefit
as all the insulation on the house is external.
Other key considerations were CLT’s structural
ability to achieve the clean, long spans Micah
was looking for and the material’s high-quality
finish which was important because internally
the CLT has been left exposed throughout.
The certified CLT used for the project was
supplied by Stora Enso UK. Stora’s Gareth
Mason will be on the main stage with Micah
Jones at the 2018 Surface Design Show on

February Stakeholder Seminars

Manufacturing by Design
BERKHAMSTED based manufacturers
of specialist joinery, Manufacturing By
Design, have recently obtained PEFC chain
of custody certification. Certification to a
programme such as PEFC’s enables them to
provide their customers with assurances of
responsible sourcing.
Established in 1992, Manufacturing By
Design is a leader in individually designed,
hand-crafted, bespoke furniture and

Joins PEFC Board
IN November, PEFC held its 22nd General
Assembly in Helsinki, Finland. At the
culmination of the event, representatives from
nature conservation, tropical forestry and the
forest industry were elected on to the Board of
PEFC International. Alongside two returning
Board members, Riikka Joukio (representing
the forest industry and processing sector)
and Hervé Le Bouler (representing the
conservation sector), two new board members
were appointed. Gerald Pfiffinger and Mohd
Nurudeen Iddrisu.

Gerald is Managing Director at

organisation of 35 Austrian environmental
organisations. He was previously Managing
Director of Birdlife Austria and has also
worked for WWF Austria, serving as a WWF
representative on several advisory boards and
business partnerships.
Nurudeen is a professional forester, forest
geneticist and forest resource analyst with
over twenty years’ experience in the field.

from PEFC
IN a bid to highlight the importance of the
world’s forests and the crucial role forest
certification plays in their conservation, PEFC
International launched three new videos
during PEFC Week in Helsinki.
These short videos entitled Using wood is
good but let’s make it certified, How can we
best protect our forests? PEFC certification

He currently
heads up the Ghana Forestry Commission’s
London Office. He is involved in articulating
Ghana’s policies on issues such as timber trade,
forest sustainability, timber legality (especially
FLEGT licensing). He was Chairperson for the
ITTO Committee on Reforestation and Forest
Management from 2015-2016.
Sarawak opts for Certification under
Malaysian Timber Certification Scheme
IN November, the Malaysian Timber
Certification Council (MTCC) welcomed
a move by the state government for
mandatory forest certification in Sarawak,
Malaysia. The announcement was made
by Sarawak’s Deputy Chief Minister, Datuk
Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan, at the State
Assembly.
Yong Teng Koon, who heads MTCC, welcomed
the development noting that forest
certification was an important instrument
to promote and verify the implementation
of sustainable forest management in order
to safeguard environmental, social and
economic benefits. He also noted that as
forestry and timber industries contributed
significantly towards the socio-economic
development of the country, it is imperative
that Malaysia is able to demonstrate its
forest sustainability credentials through
certification.
Timber concessions in Sarawak will be
required to obtain forest management
certification under the Malaysian Timber
Certification Scheme (MTCS) to demonstrate
that they are responsibly managed.
The MTCS which sets the requirements for
sustainable forest management certification
in Malaysia, was the first Asian scheme to be
endorsed by PEFC Council.

Notification Fees
PEFC Logo on Greggs Held for Third Year
Christmas Cups
IN December, Christmas-themed coffee cups carrying the PEFC label
began to appear in Greggs’ 1,800 high street outlets.
Greggs sells more than 1 million cups of Fairtrade coffee a week so
this should help grow awareness of the PEFC’s distinctive “Two Trees”
label. The PEFC logo appears on thousands of wood-based products
around the world, providing consumers with assurances of responsible
wood products sourcing.
AT its final meeting in 2017, the PEFC UK Board recognised that for
many certified companies, trading conditions remain challenging. It
was therefore unanimously agreed that the annual notification fees
levied by PEFC UK, would remain at their current rates for the third
year in succession.
There will therefore be no increase in notification fees for either UK
Chain of Custody or Forest Management certificate holders in 2018.

Silentnight Wins Furniture Makers’ Company Award

The Award recognises sustainability developments in companies
which manufacture furniture and furnishings. The Award criteria were
developed by the Furniture Industry Sustainability Programme (FISP)
which is administered by the Furniture Industry Research Association
(FIRA).

Entries were judged by a panel of industry experts, chaired by Rupert

Senior, Chairman of The Furniture Makers’ Company. The judging
panel also included PEFC UK’s Executive Director, Alun Watkins, FIRA
General Manager Phil Reynolds, environmental advisor Alan Marshall
and FIRA’s sustainability consultant, Stuart Cochrane, FIRA. The panel
were impressed that Silentnight had embedded sustainability firmly
within the company’s culture. PEFC’s Executive Director was a member of the judging panel

Changes to PEFC’s Group Certification Standard Surface Design Show 2018
