1. (a) Define the terms:


(i) Mechanical advantage
(ii) Velocity ratio
(b)A pulley system of velocity ratio 4 is used to raise a load of 16kg.
An effort of 50N is applied for 40 seconds to have the load
through 1.2m.
Calculate
(i) The mechanical advantage
(ii) The efficiency of the machine
(iii) The power developed by the effort
(c) Explain the effect of oiling the pulley system on the following
(i) Velocity ratio
(ii) Mechanical advantage
(iii) Efficiency
(d) State two applications of pulley systems.

2. (a) Distinguish between ductile and brittle materials.


(b) (i) State Hooke’s Law.
(ii) Describe an experiment to demonstrate Hooke’s law for a
spring.
(iii) A force of 160N stretches a helical spring by 72mm.
Calculate the
extension produced when a mass of 12kg is hung on the
same spring.

(c) In an experiment to verify Hooke’s law using a spring the


following results
were obtained.

3. (a) (i) What are Cathode rays?

(ii) State two properties of Cathode rays.
(b) (i) Draw a well labeled diagram of a cathode ray oscilloscope
(CRO).
(ii) State one function of each of the parts labeled in b(i)
above.
(iii) Give one use of the C.R.O.

(c) (i) Distinguish between hard and soft x-rays.


(ii) Briefly explain how x-rays are produced (diagram not
required).

4. (a) (i) What is a primary cell?


(ii) State any one source of e.m.f. other than a cell.

(b) (i) Draw a well-labeled diagram to show the essential features


of a
simple cell.
(ii) State two defects of a simple cell and explain how they are
minimized.

5. (a) (i) What is meant by the term neutral point as applied in


magnetism?

(ii) Sketch the resultant magnetic field pattern for a bar
magnet with its
North pole pointing North in the earth’s magnetic field.
(b) Use the domain theory to explain the following;
(i) Magnetic saturation
(ii) Demagnetization

(c) (i) State Lenz’s law of electromagnetic induction.


(ii) With the aid of a labeled diagram describe how an a.c
generator
works.
(iii) Sketch the variation of e.m.f generated with time for the
generator
in c(ii) above.
(iv) State the modifications which can be made to convert the
a.c.
generator to a d.c. motor.

6. (a) (i) State the laws of reflection.


(ii) Distinguish between regular and diffuse reflection.

(b) Describe an experiment to show that light travels in a straight


line.

(c) An object 10cm high and at right angles to the principal axis of a
convex
mirror is 24cm from the pole. If the focal length of the mirror is
6cm, by use of a scale drawing:
(i) Determine the image distance.
(ii) Calculate the magnification of the image in (c) (i) above.
(iii) Give one application of a diverging mirror.
(iv) Give one difference and one similarity, between a lens
camera and
a human eye.

7. (a) (i) Define the term temperature.


(ii) State one advantage of mercury over alcohol as a
thermometric
liquid.
(b) Differentiate between evaporation and boiling.
(c) (i) State Charles’ law.
(ii) Describe a simple experiment to verify Charles law.

(d) A fixed mass of a gas at constant pressure has volume of
1300cm3 at
27oC. Find its volume when the temperature rises to 100oC.

8. (a) (i) Define the term amplitude.


(ii) A water wave moves from shallow to deep water. What
effect would
this have on its frequency and wavelength?

(b) (i) What is reverberation?


(ii) Mention any one importance of reverberation.
(iii) Describe an experiment to determine the speed of sound
in the air
by the echo method.
