Chapter 1 Direction Drilling

1.Directional drilling

1.1 Introduction

Directional drilling can generally be defined as the science of directing a

Wellbore along a predetermined trajectory to intersect a designated
subsurface Target. Figure1-1

At one time, it was assumed all oil wells were essentially vertical or the bottom
of the hole was directly under the drilling rig. Unfortunately, this is not true.
The petroleum industry did not become fully aware of deviated well problems
until the development of the Seminole, Oklahoma field. The wells in this field
were drilled very close together. As a result of the deviation tendencies, wells
were drilled into other drilling wells and wells which were already producing.
Also, wells were encountering the producing formation at different measured
depths. The true vertical depths were similar, but measured depths varied
significantly.
In the late 1920's, survey instruments were developed that could measure
both inclination and azimuth. Deviations as high as 46º from vertical were
measured in the Seminole wells. The average deviation from vertical was
approximately 13°.
The first controlled directional well was drilled in California in 1930 to tap
offshore oil reserves. Unfortunately, there was a dispute as to who owned the
oil offshore. Operators were drilling across lease lines in order to drain oil
owned by someone else, resulting in legal problems.
In the 1930's, wells were directionally drilled to tap oil reserves that would
otherwise be inaccessible. Directional drilling was employed to produce oil
from under a cemetery. Oil was produced from under the ocean by placing the
rig on the shore and directionally drilling into the offshore oil deposits.
Little attention was paid to directional drilling until a relief well was drilled to kill
a blowout near Conroe, Texas. In that instance, a blowout had occurred while
drilling; and as a result, a 170 foot diameter crater was created around the

1
Chapter 1 Direction Drilling

well. The drilling rig sank and was lost. Approximately 6,000 barrels of oil per
day were flowing from the crater. A relief well was drilled near the surface
location of the blowout. Directional drilling techniques were used to intersect
the producing formation near the blowout, and the blowout was killed by
pumping fluid down the relief well and into the blowout well. Since then,
directional drilling has been widely accepted. Today, the on-going research
and development of new tools and techniques are making directional drilling
more accurate and economical.

1.2.1 Multiple wells from offshore structures

Figure1-2 shows fixed platform on the sea bed many directional wells

3
Chapter 1 Direction Drilling

The most common application of directional drilling techniques is in offshore

Drilling. Many oil and gas
Deposits in the Gulf of Mexico, North Sea and other
Areas are situated beyond the reach of land based rigs. To drill a large
number of vertical wells from individual platforms is obviously impractical and
would be uneconomical.
The conventional approach for a large oilfield has been to install fixed platform
on the sea bed, from which many directional wells may be drilled. Figure1-2
The bottom hole locations of these wells can be carefully spaced for optimum
recovery.
In a conventional development, the wells cannot be drilled until the platform
has been constructed and
Installed in position. This may mean a delay of 2 - 3 years before production
can begin.
This delay can be considerably reduced by pre drilling constructed.
Some of the wells through a subsea template while the platform is being these
wells are directionally
Drilled from a semi-submersible rig and tied back to the platform once it is
installed.

1.2.2 Relief wells

Figure1-3 shows drill relief wells to “kill” blowout wells

4
Chapter 1 Direction Drilling

Directional techniques are used to drill relief wells in order to “kill” blowout
wells. Figure1-3
The relief well is deviated to pass as close as possible to the uncontrolled well
in the reservoir. Heavy mud is pumped into the reservoir to overcome the
pressure
And bring the wild well under control

1.2.3 Controlling vertical wells

Figure1-4 shows well back to vertical as supposed

Directional techniques are used to “straighten crooked holes”. In other words,

when deviation occurs in a well which is supposed to be vertical, Various
techniques are used to bring the well back to vertical. Figure1-4
This was one of the earliest applications of directional drilling.

5
Chapter 1 Direction Drilling

1.2.4 Sidetracking

Figure1-5 shows sidetracking

Sidetracking out of an existing wellbore is another application of directional

drilling.
This sidetracking may be done to bypass an obstruction ( a “fish”) in the
original wellbore or to explore the extent of the producing zone in a certain
sector of a field. Figure1-5

6
Chapter 1 Direction Drilling

1.2.5 Inaccessible locations

Figure1-6 shows inaccessible area as directional well

Directional wells are often drilled because the surface location directly above
the reservoir is inaccessible, either because of natural or man-made
obstacles. Figure1-6
Examples include reservoirs under cities, mountains and, lakes.

1.2.6 Fault drilling

Figure 1-7. shows fault drilling

7
Chapter 1 Direction Drilling

Directional drilling is also applicable in fault drilling. It is sometimes difficult to

drill a vertical well in an inclined fault plane Figure 1-7.
Often, the bit will deflect when passing through the fault plane, and sometimes
the bit will follow the fault plane.
To avoid this problem, the well can be drilled on the “up dip” or “down dip”
side of the fault and deflected into the producing formation.

1.2.7 Salt dome drilling

Figure 1-8. shows directional drilling used to overcome the problems of salt dome

Directional drilling programs are sometimes used to overcome the problems

of salt dome drilling Figure 1-8.
Instead of drilling through the salt, the well is drilled at onside of the dome and
is then deviated around and underneath the overhanging cap.

8
Chapter 1 Direction Drilling

1.2.8 Shoreline drilling

Figure 1-9 shows shoreline drilling

In the case where a reservoir lies offshore but quite close to land, the most
economical way to exploit the reservoir may be to drill directional wells from a
Land rig on the coast. Figure1-9

1.2.9 Horizontal Drilling - Long, Medium, and Short Radii

Figure1-10 shows long, medium, short radius

Horizontal drilling can be subdivided into 3 categories:- Long Radius, Medium

Radius, and Short Radius. Figure1-10

9
Chapter 1 Direction Drilling

The basis for this categorization is the rate of angle build in the wellbore,
which determines the distance
that must be drilled to turn the wellbore from its vertical or nearly vertical
configuration to the horizontal plane.
Long and medium radius wells use conventional directional drilling tools,
equipment and drilling techniques, while short radius requires modified and
specialized drilling tools, equipment, and techniques.

1.2.10 Re-entry/Multi-lateral wells

Figure1-11 shows multi-lateral drilling

Re-entry and Multi-lateral drilling employs the full range of directional drilling
tools and techniques. Figure1-11
Including planning, wellbore engineering, and careful consideration of the
numerous aspects of drilling straight and deviated holes.
Well configurations can include dual stacked, dual opposing, dual opposing
stacked, spokes, lateral tie-back, and herringbone.

1.3.1 Target

The objective defined by the geologist which the Well must reach .

1.3.2 Target Displacement

Target displacement is defined as the horizontal distance from the surface

location to centre of the target in a straight line.

1.3.3 True Vertical Depth

True Vertical Depth (TVD) is the depth of the wellbore at any point measured
in a vertical plane and normally referenced from the horizontal plane of the

Kelly bushing of the drilling rig.

Figure1-12. shows common terminology relevant hole deviation

11
Chapter 1 Direction Drilling

1.3.4 Kick Off Point

This is the point at which the first deflection tool is utilized and the increase in
angle starts. Figure1-13

Figure1-13 shows kick off point

1.3.5 Build Rate

The change in inclination per measured length drilled (typically o/100' or o/30
m). The build rate is achieved through the use of a deflection tool (positive
displacement motor with a built in adjustable housing or purposefully designed
stabilized bottom hole assembly).

1.3.6 Build Up Section

This is the part of the hole where the vertical angle is increased at a certain
rate, depending on the formations and drilling assembly used. During the
Build Up the drift angle and direction are constantly checked in order to see
whether a course correction or change in build rate is required.

12
Chapter 1 Direction Drilling

1.3.7 Tangent
This section, also called the Hold Section, is a straight portion of the hole
drilled with the maximum angle required to reach the target. Subtle course
changes may be made in this section. Figure1-14

Figure1-14. shows hold section

1.3.8 Drop Section

In S-type holes, the drop section is where the drift angle is dropped down to a
lower inclination or in some cases vertical at a defined rate. figure1-15

Figure1-15 shows section of drop section

1.3.9 Course Length

This course length is the actual distance drilled by the well bore from one
point to the next as measured.

13
Chapter 1 Direction Drilling

1.3.10 Vertical Section

The Vertical Section of a well is dependent upon the bearing or azimuth of
interest. It is the horizontal displacement of the well path projected at 90o to
the desired bearing. Figure 1-16

Figure1-16. shows horizontal displacement of the well path.

2.4 Horizontal wells

Fiqure2-4 shows horizontal well profile

Horizontal well is drilled to a point above the reservoir ; then it is deflected and
the angle increase until it reaches 90 degrees or more when properly applied
one horizontal borehole can produce a reservoir better than several vertically
drilled wells Fiqure2-4.

22
Chapter 2 Direction Drilling

2.4.1 Types of Horizontal wells

First of all, a horizontal well must be defined. There are a number of wells
drilled that are considered to be horizontal by some individuals but not
others. One definition requires a horizontal wellbore to have an inclination
greater than 86° and only portions of the wellbore greater than 86°
constitutes the horizontal wellbore length. Another definition states that
any portion of a wellbore after the well reaches 80° is considered as part of
the horizontal length even if the inclination falls below 80°. For our
purposes, a horizontal wellbore will be any well designed to improve
productivity by drilling at an inclination greater than 80º through the
producing formation. The horizontal length will be the measured depth
along the wellbore after the well has reached an inclination of 80°. None of
the horizontal departure prior to reaching 80° will be considered as part of
the horizontal section length. In long radius drilling, that distance can be
significant. There are three types of horizontal wells Figure 2-5.

 Short radius

 Medium radius

 Long radius

23
Chapter 2 Direction Drilling

Figure2-5 shows three types of horizontal well

1.1.2.2 Short radius:

 Features and Benefits

1- Standard MWD services

2- Curve capabilities down to 40 ft radius
3- Wire line retrievable MWD for reduced risk
4- Three point curve contact below power section
5- Articulations for flexibility
6- Alternative to expensive and strong rotation farce programs
7- Efficient operation - single motor for kick-off, curve and lateral
8- Longer laterals in lease restricted areas
9- Isolation of trouble zones
10- Reduced cost with reentry drilling

24
Chapter 2 Direction Drilling

 Application

Short radius drilling provides the means to expose reservoirs from existing
wellbores which are not drillable with conventional motors. Typical
applications involve reentry into existing wells where the kick-off point
(KOP) is limited by a problem formation, into existing wells where the kick-off
point into existing wells casing shoe or internal completion component. In
such cases, the true vertical distance (TVD) between the KOP and the zone
of interest defines the radius required to hit a horizontal target. The ability to
drill a lateral section, without intersecting nearby problem formations,
eliminates the need Torun a protective liner and saves cost.
Opportunities are increased with the proper application of short radius drilling.
By keeping both the drilled curve and lateral drain hole within the desired
portion of the reservoir, undesired water and gas encroachment from nearby
contacts is reduced. Minimized TVDs between kick-offend the reservoir
reduces the pressure drop.

This reduction improves artificial lift production by lowering the hydrostatic

head below the pump positioned in the vertical section of the well.
Additionally, well spacing and lease lines restrict the length of producing
lateral sections drilled with traditional medium or
Long radius wellbores. This problem is solved by minimizing the horizontal
landing distance which increases the lateral component of the wellbore. Short
radius drilling techniques increases return on investment by providing a
means to exploit untapped reservoirs immature fields. Slim Pulse MWD tools
are designed to operate in high dogleg environments. The tool is fully
retrievable and resettable in collar sizes down to 23⁄8 in. with flow ranges from
35 to1200 g pm. The tool offers direction, inclination and gamma ray
measurements in close proximity to the bit for better trajectory control and
gesturing capabilities.

25
Chapter 2 Direction Drilling

The combination of Slim Pulse and AIM services provides precision trajectory
control in hole sizes as small as 57⁄8 in. while maintaining irretrievability. The
service provides superior trajectory control in short radius applications.
Precise trajectory control results in smoother wellbores with extended lateral
sections and maximum reservoir Exposure.

 Advantages

1) Enables sharp turns into thin reservoirs

2) both motor driven and drill pipe driven
3) Laterals can be completed and tied back using special liners

 Disadvantages

1) Limited extension possible –record= 1200

2) Poor directional control , must snake left then right to
3) Special tools and equipment required

26
Chapter 2 Direction Drilling

1.1.2.1 Medium radius

Some advantages of medium radius are:

1) Higher build rates require a shorter build section which reduces directional
drilling costs, especially in harder formations.

2) Takes less horizontal displacement to reach 90° which may be beneficial

on smaller leases.

3) More vertical hole can be drilled before the directional drilling starts.
Troublesome formations near the target interval can be drilled vertically
and cased.

4) Since the kick off point is closer to the target, the ability to hit the precise
target is better.

5) Medium radius can achieve longer horizontal lengths. Horizontal lengths

greater than 7000 feet have been drilled.

Some disadvantages of medium radius are:

1) Higher build rates cause greater bending stresses in tubular although they
are manageable.

2) Hole sizes are limited to a maximum of 12¼ inches and then a build rate of
around 12°/100 feet is the maximum (depending upon directional drilling
contractor).

3) Completion alternatives are slightly reduced.

4) Rotary steerable assemblies cannot be used in the build section.

27
Chapter 2 Direction Drilling

1.1.2.2Long radius

The advantages of long radius horizontal drilling are:

1- Lower dogleg severities allowing rotation of drill string and less bending
stresses in casing and tubing.

2- Wells are more easily logged.

3- The completion alternatives are not limited.

4- Long radius wells are useful from platforms or drilling pads where an
extended reach is required. Most offshore horizontal wells are long radius
because directional drilling is required before reaching the target in the
reservoir where the horizontal will be positioned.

5- Provides the ability to drill the longest horizontal sections. Horizontal

sections in excess of 10,000 feet have been drilled.

6- Larger hole sizes can be drilled.

disadvantages of long radius horizontal wells are:

1- The kick off point is more shallow and the build section longer which can
increase directional drilling costs, especially in harder formations where
penetration rates are lower.

2- It is slightly harder to hit a small target because of the higher kick off point
due to survey uncertainties.

3- The horizontal departure prior to reaching horizontal is significantly higher

and limits horizontal lengths on smaller leases.
4- Long radius horizontal wells use conventional off the shelf equipment.
Any directional drilling contractor can drill a long radius wellbore.
5- Long radius is chosen if long horizontal departures are required prior to
entering the reservoir and if longer horizontal sections are required.

3. Well Planning

3.1 Introduction
There are many aspects involved in well planning, and many individuals from
various companies and disciplines are involved in designing various programs
for the well (mud program, casing program, drill string design, bit program,
etc). A novel approach to well planning is one where the service contractors
become equally involved in their area of expertise.
This section will concentrate on those aspects of well planning which have
always been the provinces of directional drilling companies.

3.2 Reference Systems and Coordinates.

With the exception of Inertial Navigation Systems, all survey systems

measure inclination and azimuth at a particular measured depth (depths
measured “along hole”).
These measurements are tied to fixed reference systems
so that the course of the borehole can be calculated and recorded. These
reference systems include:

 Depth references.
 Inclination references.
 Azimuth references.

32
Chapter 3 Direction Drilling

3.2.1 Depth References

During the course of a directional well, there are two kinds of depths:

• Measured Depth (MD) is the distance measured along the actual course of
the borehole from the surface reference point to the survey point.
This depth is always measured in some way, for example, pipe tally, wire line
depth counter, or mud loggers depth counter.

• True Vertical Depth (TVD) is the vertical distance from the depth reference
level to a point on the borehole course. This depth is always calculated from
the deviation survey data.
In most drilling operations the rotary table elevation is used as the working
depth reference.
The abbreviation BRT (below rotary table) and RKB
(Rotary Kelly bushing) are used to indicate depths measured from the rotary
table.
This can also be referred to as derrick floor elevation. For floating drilling rigs
the rotary table elevation is not fixed and hence a mean rotary table elevation
has to be used.
In order to compare individual wells within the same field, a common depth
reference must be defined and referred to (e.g. When drilling a relief
Well into a blow-out well, the difference in elevation between the wellheads
has to be accurately known). Offshore, mean sea level (MSL) is sometimes
used.
Variations in actual sea level from MSL can be read from
Tide tables or can be measured.

33
Chapter 3 Direction Drilling

3.2.2 Inclination References

The inclination of a well-bore is the angle (in degrees) between the vertical
and the well bore axis at a particular point. The vertical reference is the
direction of the local gravity vector and could be indicated by a plumb bob.

3.2.3 Azimuth Reference Systems

For directional surveying there are three azimuth reference systems:

• Magnetic North
• True (Geographic) North
• Grid North
All “magnetic-type” tools give an azimuth (hole direction) referenced to
Magnetic North. However, the final calculated coordinates are always
referenced to either True North or Grid North.

 True (Geographic) North

This is the direction of the geographic North Pole which lies on the Earth’s
Axis of rotation. Direction is shown on maps using meridians of longitude.

 Grid North

Drilling operations occur on a curved surface the surface of the Earth but
when calculating horizontal plane coordinates a flat surface is assumed.
Since it is not possible to exactly represent part of the surface of a sphere on
a flat well plan, corrections must be applied to the measurements. To do
This, different projection systems which can be used.

34
Chapter 3 Direction Drilling

 UTM System

One example of a grid system is the Universal Transverse Mercator (UTM)

System.
In transverse Mercator projection, the surface of the spheroid chosen to
represent the Earth is wrapped in a cylinder which touches the spheroid along
a chosen meridian.
(A meridian is a circle running around the Earth passing
Through both North and South geographic poles.)
These meridians of longitude converge towards the North Pole and do not
produce a rectangular grid system.
The grid lines on a map form the rectangular grid system,
The Northerly direction of which is determined by
One specified meridian of longitude. This “Grid North” direction will only be
identical to “True North” on a specified meridian.
The relationship between True North and Grid North is indicated by the angles
Convergence is the angle
Difference between grid north and true north for the
Location being considered Figure3-1.

35
Chapter 3 Direction Drilling

Figure 3-1 shows relationships between True north and Grid north

The reference meridians are 6 degrees apart, starting at the Greenwich

meridian, which means the world is divided into 60 zones. The zones are
numbered 0 to 60 with zone 31 having the 0 degree meridian (Greenwich)on
the left and the 6 degree East on the right. Each zone is then further divided
into grid sectors - a grid sector covering 8 degrees latitude starting from the
equator and ranging from 80° south to 80° North. The sectors are given letters
ranging from C to X (excluding I and O).

36
Chapter 3 Direction Drilling

 Lambert Projection.

Another projection system, used in some parts of the world, is the conical
projection or LAMBERT system. A cone as opposed to a cylinder covers the
spheroid under consideration.
This produces a representation with meridians as convergent lines and
parallels as arcs of circles.
Further discussion of the coordinate systems and map projections is beyond
the scope of this text.

 Field Coordinates

Although the coordinates of points on a well path could be expressed asUTM

coordinates, it is not normal practice. Instead, a reference point on the
platform or rig is chosen as the local origin and given the coordinates0,0. On
offshore platforms this point is usually the center of the platform.
The Nothings and Easting points on the wells drilled from the platform are
referenced to this single origin. This is important when comparing positions of
wells, in particular for anti-collision analysis.

 Direction Measurements
Survey tools measure the direction of the wellbore on the horizontal plane
with respect to North reference, whether
It is True or Grid North. There are two systems:

37
Chapter 3 Direction Drilling

 Azimuth.
In the azimuth system, directions are expressed as a clockwise angle from0°
to 359.99°, with North being 0° Figure3-2

Figure3-2 shows The Azimuth System

 Quadrant Bearings

In the quadrant system, the directions are expressed as angles from 0°-90°
measured from North in the two Northern quadrants and from South in the
Southern quadrants Figure3-3

and vice versa Figure3-4

4.Deflection tools

A prime requirement for directional drilling is suitable deflection tools, along

with special bits and other auxiliary tools.
A deflection tool is a mechanical device that is placed in the borehole to cause
the drill bit to be deviated from the present course of the borehole.
There are numerous deflection tools available. The selection depends upon
several factors, but principally upon the type of formation where the deviation
is to start. The most common tools used for deflection are:

1- Whipstocks
2- Jetting
3- Down hole motor and bent sub

 Turbine type motor

 Positive displacement motor
 Bent sub

4- (MWD)equipment

4.1 Whipstocks

The whipstock was the main deflection tool from 1930-1950. A standard
Whipstock is seldom used nowadays, but it has not disappeared completely.
Whipstocks are used in coiled tubing drilling for re-entry work.
There are 3 types of whipstock used in conventional directional drilling;

42
Chapter 4 Direction Drilling

 Standard removable Whipstock

The Standard Removable Whipstock is mainly used to kick off wells, but
Can also be used for sidetracking. It consists of a long inverted steel wedge
Which is concave on one side to hold and guide the drilling assembly Figure4-1
It is
Also provided with a chisel point at the bottom to prevent the tool from
Turning, and a heavy collar at the top to withdraw the tool from the hole. It
will usually be used with a drilling assembly consisting of a bit, a spiral
Stabilizer, and an orientation sub, rigidly attached to the whipstock by
Means of a shear pin.
The whipstock assembly is lowered to the bottom of the hole and
orientated. Weight is applied to set the whipstock and shear the pin. The bit
is then drilled down and forced to deflect to one side. A 12 to 16 foot “rat
Hole” is drilled below the toe of the whipstock and the assembly is then
Pulled out of hole, taking the whipstock with it. A hole opener is run to
Open the rat hole out to full gauge. The hole opener assembly is then
Tripped out and a rapid angle build assembly run in hole to “follow up "the
Initial deflection. This whole procedure may have to be repeated several
Times in the kick-off.

 Advantages of the standard whipstock

Advantages are that it is a fairly simple piece of equipment which requires
Relatively little maintenance and has no temperature limitations.

 disadvantage of the standard whipstock

- The number of “trips” involved.
- The other important disadvantage is that the
- Whipstock produced a sudden, sharp deflection in other words, a
severe
- Dogleg which may give rise to subsequent problems with the hole.

43
Chapter 4 Direction Drilling

Figure4-1 shows standard removable whipsstock

44
Chapter 4 Direction Drilling

 Circulating Whipstock
The “Circulating Whipstock” is run, set and drilled like the standard
Whipstock. However, in this case the drilling mud initially flows through a
Passage to the bottom of the whipstock which permits more efficient
Cleaning of the bottom of the hole and ensures a clean seat for the tool. It is
Most efficient for washing out bottom hole fills.

 Permanent Casing Whipstock

The “Permanent Casing Whipstock” is designed to remain permanently in the

well Figure4-2 It is used where a “window” is to be cut in casing for a sidetrack.
The casing whipstock can be set using a Baker Model “D” Packer. A special
stinger at the base of the whipstock slips into the packer assembly, and a
stainless steel key within the packer locks the whipstocks anchor-seal and
prohibits any circular movement during drilling.
The normal procedure is to orientate the system and then set the packer.
After this, the starting mill is pinned to the whipstock and the whole
Assembly run slowly in hole and seated in the packer.
Although the packer has already been orientated, it is good practice to
orientate the whipstock in the same manner as the packer. This will ensure
That a faster “latch up” will take place without endangering the shear pin.
After the whipstock has been “seated” in the packer, the pin is sheared and
circulation and rotation started. The starting mill is used to make an initial cut
through the casing and mill approximately 2 feet of the window. The lug that
held the starting mill to the whipstock must also be milled off.
This assembly is tripped out and the mill changed. A tungsten carbide or
diamond speed mill is used to cut the rest of the window. Once the window
has been cut, approximately 5 feet of formation is cut before pulling out of
hole. Next, a taper mill is run with a watermelon mill immediately above it.

45
Chapter 4 Direction Drilling

This is done to “clean” the top and the bottom of the window. Finally, another
trip is made to change over to the drilling assembly which is used to drill
ahead.

 Advantage

The advantage of using this system, instead of the normal method of milling a
section and sidetracking, is that the operation usually takes less time.

 Disadvantage

The main disadvantage is that it gives a sharp dogleg, and as such the casing
whipstock assembly is not recommended if there is a considerable distance to
drill below the sidetrack. This is because problems can occur when trying to
pull stabilizers, etc back into the casing through the window.

4.2 Jetting

Jetting (or badgering) is a technique used to deviate wellbores in soft

formations Figure4-3
The technique was developed in the mid 1950s and superseded the use of
whipstocks as the primary deflection technique.
Although jetting has subsequently been supplanted by down hole motor
deflection assemblies it is still used frequently and offers several advantages
which makes it the preferred method in some situations.
A special jet bit may be used, but it is also common practice to use a standard
soft formation tri-cone bit, with one very large nozzle and two smaller ones
Figure4-4

Figure4-3 shows bit set-up for jetting

48
Chapter 4 Direction Drilling

 Requirements for jetting

• The formations must be soft enough to be eroded by the mud exiting the
large nozzle. As a rough rule of thumb, if formations cannot be drilled at
penetration rates of greater than 80 ft/hr using normal drilling parameters,
they are not suitable for jetting. Jetting is most effective in soft, sandy
formations, and its effectiveness is reduced as depth increases, since the
formations become more compacted.
• Adequate rig hydraulic horsepower must be available. For jetting to be
successful there must be adequate hydraulic energy available at the bit to
erode the formation. A rule of thumb for jetting is that mud velocity through the
large jet should be at least 500 ft/sec.

 Jetting Assemblies

A typical jetting assembly used to drill a 121/4“pilot hole is:

1) 121/4“jet bit,
2) Extension sub,
3) 121/4“stabilizer,
4) UBHO sub,
5) 3 x 8" Drill Collars,
6) 12-1/4” stabilizer,
7) a Drill Collar,
8) HWDP as required.

This is essentially a strong angle build rotary assembly with a suitable bit for
jetting. The upper stabilizer is optional and is often omitted.

49
Chapter 4 Direction Drilling

 Nuzzling the Jetting Bit

There are three alternatives:

1. Use a specialized jet bit with a large extended nozzle in place of

One of the cones.
2. Fit one large and two small nozzles in a conventional tri-cone bit.
3. Blank off one nozzle of a conventional bit to divert the flow through the
other two.
Flow through two jets may be desirable in large hole sizes (e.g. 17-
1/2”)because of the large washout required to deflect the bit and near bit
stabilizer. Both (A) and (B) work well in most hole sizes which are commonly
jet drilled. (B) is the most common option because it uses standard bits and
nozzles and results in a bit dressed in such a way as to be suitable for both
jetting and drilling.
A 12-1/4” bit dressed for jetting would typically have the main nozzle size of
26/32” or 28/32” and the other two 10/32” or 8/32”.

Figure4-4 shows jetting and drilling actions

50
Chapter 4 Direction Drilling

 Advantages of Jetting

• It is a simple and cheap method of deflecting well bores in soft Formations.

No special equipment is needed.
• Dogleg severity can be partly controlled from surface by varying the number
of feet “jetted” each time.
• The survey tool is not far behind the bit, so survey depths are not much less
than the corresponding bit depths.
• Orientation of tool face is fairly easy.
• The same assembly can be used for normal rotary drilling.

 Disadvantages of Jetting

The technique only works in soft formation and therefore at shallow depths.
For this reason, jetting is mainly used to kick wells off at shallow depths.
In jetting, high dogleg severities are often produced. Deviation is produced in
a series of sudden changes, rather than a smooth continuous change. For this
reason, it is normal practice to jet an under gauge hole and then open it out to
full gauge, which smoothes off the worst of the doglegs.

4.3 Down hole motor and bent sub

A common method of deflecting wellbores is to use a down hole motor and

bent sub. As illustrated in Figure the bent sub is placed directly above the
motor and the bent sub which makes this a deflection assembly. Figure4-5
Its lower thread (on the pin) is inclined 1° - 3° from the axis of the sub body.
The bent sub acts as the pivot of a lever and the bit is pushed sideways as
well as downwards. This sideways component of force at the bit gives the
motor a tendency to drill a curved path, provided there is no rotation of the drill
string. The degree of curvature (dogleg severity) depends on the bentsub
angle and the OD of the motor, bent sub and drill collars in relation to the
diameter of the hole. It also depends on the length of the motor.

51
Chapter 4 Direction Drilling

A down hole motor and bent sub assembly may be used for kicking off wells,
and for correction runs or for sidetracking.
Notice the absence of any stabilizers in the lower part of this assembly.
Usually there would be no stabilizers for at least 90 feet above the bent sub.
In fact, it is not uncommon for the entire BHA to be “slick” when a motor and
bent sub is used for kicking off at shallow depths.

 Positive Displacement Motors

Figure4-5 shows down hole and bent sub assembly

52
Chapter 4 Direction Drilling

1) .Positive Displacement Motors

A positive displacement motor (PDM) is a hydraulically driven down hole

motor that uses the Moniteau principle to rotate the bit, independent of drill
string rotation. The PDM is made up of several sections:

• By-pass valve or dump sub.

• Motor section.

• Universal joint or connecting rod section.

• Bearing section with drive sub.

 By-Pass Valve

The by-pass valve allows fluid to fill the drill string while tripping in the
hole and to drain while tripping out. When mud is pumped, the valve closes
causing fluid to move through the tool. Most valves are of a spring piston type
which closes under pressure to seal off ports to the annulus.
type which closes under pressure to seal off ports to the annulus.
When there is no downward pressure, the spring forces the piston up so fluid
can channel through the ports to the annulus Figure 4-6

53
Chapter 4 Direction Drilling

Figure 4-6 shows bypass valve

 Motor Section

This is a reverse application of Rene Moonee's pump principle. The motor

section consists of a rubber stator and steel rotor. The simple type is a the
simple type is a helical rotor which is continuous and round. This is the single
lobe type. The stator is molded inside the outer steel housing
and is an elastometercompound.

 Connecting rod assemblies

Since the rotor is spiral shaped, it does not rotate concentrically, rather it
traces a back and forth motion. This motion must be converted to a
concentric motion to be transmitted to the bit via the drive sub. This is
achieved by a connecting rod assembly.

54
Chapter 4 Direction Drilling

 Bearing Section

A typical positive displacement motor utilizes three sets of bearings

attached to a drive shaft. There are two sets of radial bearings (“upper” and
"lower”) with one set of axial thrust bearings.
The axial thrust bearing section supports the on and off bottom loading
and hydraulic thrust.
It consists of a series of ball bearings stacked one on top of the other,
each set being contained in its own race (groove). The number of these
bearings will vary, depending on the size of the tool. Figure4-7
The upper and lower radial bearings are lined with tungsten carbide inserts.
These bearings support the concentrically rotating drive shaft against lateral
loads.

The inherent design of the upper radial bearing limits the

amount of fluid flow diverted to cool and lubricate the bearing package.
This diversion of flow is typically 2 - 10%, depending on motor and bit
pressure drop. The major portion of the drilling fluid is collected by ports
in the drive shaft and exits through the bit. In some motors, diamond
bearings are used, which need up to 20% of the flow to be diverted,
depending upon conditions.

Chapter 4 Direction Drilling

4.4 (MWD) EQUIPMENT

A typical MWD pulses the mud system in order to send information to the
surface. Air is a compressible fluid and cannot be easily pulsed. Therefore,
mud pulse MWD technology does not work in an air hole. An electromagnetic
measurement while drilling (EMWD) system will work in an air hole. The
EMWD system sends information to the surface using radio waves instead of
pulsing the standpipe.
EMWD systems have been used in air holes with mixed results. Signals do
get back to the surface and the information is correct. Reliability is the
problem with the EMWD. Frequent failures have been experienced on air
holes. Drilling conditions in an air hole are rougher than that experienced in a
mud filled hole. There is no fluid in the hole to dampen vibration. The EMWD
is not yet durable enough to work consistently in an air hole; but with
experience and improvements, the EMWD should work well.
Currently, the motors are oriented with a steering tool that sends information
to the surface using a single conductor wire line. Some steering tools have the
same problem as the EMWD. Vibrations in the well cause frequent failures. In
fact, all steering tools will experience more failures in an air hole. Selection of
the right steering tool is essential. Placing jets in the bit also reduces the
vibration experienced by the steering tool.
A side entry sub is required along with a latch in assembly for the steering
tool. Above an inclination of 70°, the steering tool will no longer fall in the hole
and cannot be pumped down with air. Unlike mud, the air passing by the
steering tool does not generate enough drag to carry a heavy tool down the
hole. The steering tool must be installed through a side entry sub above 70°
and tripped to bottom with the drill string.

5. SURVEY CALCULATIONS

INTRODUCTION
Directional surveys are taken at specified intervals in order to determine the
position of the bottom of the hole relative to the surface location. The surveys
are converted to a North-South (N-S), East-West (E-W) and true vertical
depth coordinates using one of several calculation methods.

There are several methods that can be used to calculate survey data:
1) Tangential,

2) Balanced Tangential,

3) Average Angle,

4) Radius of Curvature

5) Minimum Curvature

5.1TANGENTIAL

At one time the tangential method was the most widely used because it was
the easiest. The equations are relatively simple, and the calculations can be
performed easily in the field. Unfortunately, the tangential method is the least
accurate method and results in errors greater than all the other methods.
Figure5-1 The tangential method should not be used to calculate directional
surveys. It is only presented here to prove a point.

Figure5-1 shows Illustration of Tangential Calculation Method

……………………………..E.q 11
………………………………….E.q 12

5.2 BALANCED TANGENTIAL

This method uses the survey data from both the upper and lower stations.
The method assumes that the well path lies along two equal length, straight
line segments. The inclination and direction of each segment is given by the
corresponding survey station. The tangential method is therefore applied
twice-once to the upper half once to lower half Figure5-2 This method
approximates more closely to the probable shape of the wellbore and yield
more accurate results ( especially if the angles are changing rapidly).

Figure5-2 shows illustration of balanced tangential

…………….…..E.q 14

………………….…E.q 15

5.3AVERAGE ANGLE
When using the average angle method, the inclination and azimuth at the
lower and upper survey stations are mathematically averaged, and then the
wellbore course is assumed to be tangential to the average inclination and
azimuth.
The calculations are very similar to the tangential method and the results are
as accurate as the balanced tangential method. Since the average angle
method is both fairly accurate and easy to calculate, it is the method that can
be used in the field if a programmable calculator or computer is not available.
The error will be small and well within the accuracy needed in the field
provided the distance between surveys is not too great. The average angle
method is graphically illustrated in Figure5-3 The average angle method does
have problems at low inclinations with large changes in azimuth so it should
not be used for vertical wells.

Figure5-3 shows illustration of average angle calculation method

5.4 RADIUS OF CURVATURE

The radius of curvature method is currently considered to be one of the most
accurate methods available. The method assumes the wellbore course is a
smooth curve between the upper and lower survey stations. The curvature of
the arc is determined by the survey inclinations and azimuths at the upper and
lower survey stations as shown in Figure5-4 The length of the arc

Between and is the measured depth between surveys. In the

previous methods, the wellbore course was assumed to be one or two straight
lines between the upper and lower survey points. The curvature of the
wellbore course assumed by the radius of curvature method will more closely
approximate the actual well; therefore, it is more accurate. Unfortunately, the
equations are complicated and are not easily calculated in the field without a
programmable calculator or computer. In the equations, the inclination and
azimuth are entered as degrees.

5.5 MINIMUM CURVATURE

The minimum curvature method is similar to the radius of curvature method in

that it assumes that the wellbore is a curved path between the two survey
points. The minimum curvature method uses the same equations as the
balanced tangential multiplied by a ratio factor which is defined by the
curvature of the wellbore. Figure5-5 Therefore, the minimum curvature provides
a more accurate method of determining the position of the wellbore. Like the
radius of curvature, the equations are more complicated and not easily
calculated in the field without the aid of a programmable calculator or
computer.

Dogleg severity

Dogleg severity is a measure of the amount of change in the

inclination, and/or azimuth of a borehole, usually expressed in
degrees per 100 feet of course length. In the metric system, it is
usually expressed in degrees per 30 meters or degrees per 10
meters of course length. All directional wells have changes in the
wellbore course and, therefore, have some dogleg severity. If not,
it would not be a directional well. The dogleg severity is low if the
changes in inclination and/or azimuth are small or occur over a
long interval of course length. The dogleg severity is high when the
inclination and/or azimuth changes quickly or occur over a short
interval of course length.

Field Location

The Dahra-Jofra Field is located in the western part of the Sirte basin. The
field
consists of Dahra PL-5 reservoir in Concession 32 (discovered in 1959) and
Jofra PL-5 in Concession 11(discovered in 1958). Approximately 75% of the
productive acreage is within the Dahra field operated by Waha with the
remaining 25% in the Jofra field operated by Veba Oil Operations.
The structure of PL-5 limestone reservoir is a long anticline trending NW –
SE.
A large gas cap overlays the structure top (Dahra “B” area) while the oil zone
is
located lower towards the SE (Dahra”F” and Jofra “A” areas). A total of 262
wells have been drilled, of which 179 (F and B) wells were drilled in Dahra
Field
and 83 (A) wells in Jofra field. Of the 179 wells drilled in Dahra Field, 87 (B) 6
wells have been completed in underlying Dahra PL-7 reservoir. The drive
mechanism of Dahra-Jofra PL-5 reservoir is a solution gas expansion, with
limited water drive in eastern of Jofra. Due to the field pressure decline, early
gas breakthrough leads to an excessive gas production, which is a main
reason
that resulted in the shutting-in of the field in June 1971.

 Paleontology and Age

Paleocene (Danian) and the lower member is Upper Cretaceous (Maastricht an) in

Conclusions & Recommendations Direction Drilling

7. Conclusions and Recommendations

7.1 Conclusions:

1. A Microsoft Excel application is used to calculate survey

stations using three different survey calculation methods. Average angle,
balanced Tangential and Minimum Curvature.
2. The survey results are compared against those from the minimum-
curvature method.

3. The differences among the average angle, balanced tangential and

minimum curvature are very small.

4. Despite small errors incurred in the average angle and balanced

Tangential method, the need remains for obtaining an uninterrupted
survey of the entire wellbore.

7.2 Recommendations:

The minimum curvature method should be embedded in survey

calculation to enhance accuracy during planning process.
