But by early evening on May 18, as night thickened over the embattled armies, the 29th Marines had taken Sugar Loaf this time for keeps. THE MOoNUGHTER MORE MEMORIES OF CATATONK By Dick Anderson An example of the different attitudes back then... rate There was a special swimming hole in Catatonk Creek and we had to cross private property tO get to it. Instead of posting the Jand.as many would today, the owner, realizing we had to craw! under a fence to get there, installed a gate so we could more easily and safely reach the swimming hole, The highway, too, was different. There were few cars, especially during the war when gas was rationed. Many of us would hitchhike to Gwego end would sometimes walk for a mile befare a car would come along, We often rode our bikes down the highway, riding in and out of the white lines. Today you can hardly cross the road with traffic so heavy. We also often rode our bikes to Owego, about five miles away, sometimes after dark. Again, no one worried about us. Another example of how things were different back then... often went to basketball games at Candor School, and after the game would walk home about five miles after dark. Sometimes | would catch a ride with 3 passing motorist and other times would walk the whole distance. No one thought much about it. can't imagine # 12-14 year old doing that today. But it wasn't all good and wonderful. We did not have the medical facilities of today's society. A good EMT on. an emergency squad has more knowledge of treatment and prevention than most doctors had back then. One of the mast dreaded of diseases was Polio, There was no prevention and little care one could receive upon contracting that deadly disease. Simple illnesses of today could be fatal back then, It would be wonderful if we could go back to those simpler days, but take our modern knowledge of medicine and treatments with us. 4 Its Dad's special day, For those lucky enough to have your dad here, | hope you value him more each day. The Cherokee people were divided: What was the best way to handle the government's determination to.gat its hands on their territory? Some wanted to stay and fight. Others thought it was more pragmatic to agree to leave in exchange for money and other concessions, In 1835, a few self-appointed representatives of the Cherokee nation negotiated the Treaty of New Echata, which traded all Cherokee land east of the Mississippi for $5 million, relocation assistance and compensation for lost property. To the federal government, the realy was a done deal, bul many of the Cherokee felt betrayed. Annas was expecting Jesus when He was thrust info the room by the soldiers, Atlast, Annas had an opportunity to sea the man about whom he had heard so much. He questioned Jesus about His disciples and about His teaching. “Why do you ask Me about My teaching?” Jesus replied. "I have never tried to hide, but | have always spoken openly in the Temple and synagogues. ASK those who heard Me; thay know what I said” When Jesus said this, one of the officers holding Him struck Him wih his hand. “How dare you speak this way to a high priest?” ha said. Outside, Peter and John ware waiting with a crowd in the courtyard to see what was going to happen to Jesus. While Peter was standing, warming his hands by a fire, one of the maids came up and accused him of being a friend of Jesus. Peter claimed that he did not even know Jesus. By this time, Annas had all the information from Jesus he cared lohear, He dismissed Him and sent Him, carefully guarded by the soldiers, to the house of Caiaphas, the high priest. inside with Calaphas, the respected elders and lawyers who made up the Jewish court were wailing.
