Module 1 - Misplaced Words

The simple rule in sentence formation is (SVO)

subject verb (s) object


I speak English
I can speak English

More such rules:

(1) The object is placed immediately after the verb.


Example:

She drove the car

(2) The indirect object usually comes before the direct object without
a preposition.
Example:
subject verb indirect direct object

I gave him the money

(3) An expression of time comes after an expression of place.


Example:

We stayed there all day
She went to the beach yesterday

(4) In indirect questions the subject comes first and then the verb.
Example:

(5) Adverbs of indefinite time, like ever, never, always, often, seldom,
soon, sometimes and the adverbs almost, scarcely, hardly, nearly, ever
are placed before the principal verb. However, with the verb to
be the adverb of indefinite time is placed after the verb. The
adverb only is placed before the word it qualifies.
Example:
subject adverb verb object
He never drinks milk

They are always late

subject verb indirect adverb

(6) In compound verbs with two auxiliaries, not is placed after the
first one.
Example:
subject verb auxiliary adverb
He could not have been there

(7) In the negative infinitive, not comes before to.
