1 Introduction
HiPath AP1120 allows cost-effective operation of existing, analogue devices in an IP based telephony
infrastructure. HiPath AP1120 provides two analogue station ports for connection of analogue (POT)
telephones, analogue Modems or Fax machines.
HiPath AP1120 SIP is offered as an additional protocol variant to the H.323 version. The performance
and feature range is equal to the H.323 variant.
HiPath AP1120 SIP is supported from HiPath 2000 V2 and HiPath 3000/5000 V7, the HiPath AP1120
H.323 is no longer supplied for new sales. However, the HiPath AP1120 H.323 is currently still
supported on these platforms.
The purpose of this document is to provide a step-by-step installation and configuration guide for the
HiPath AP1120 SIP on the HiPath 2000 and HiPath 3000/5000 platforms.
2 System Requirements
HiPath 2000 V2
HiPath 3000/5000 V7
3 Licensing
HiPath AP1120 SIP requires a HiPath ComScendo license for each active analogue port.
4 Installation
By default the HiPath AP1120 SIP is supplied with DHCP active, while it is possible to use the HiPath
AP1120 SIP in this mode with the customer’s DHCP server we will only consider using a fixed IP
address in this document. If you must use the HiPath AP1120 SIP in DHCP mode please call the TAC
for more information.
Recovery Mode provides a way to restart the HiPath AP1120 with a known, minimal configuration and a
fixed IP address. This mode is useful for recovering from configuration errors that put the unit into an
unusable state and also as a base to configure the unit from scratch. Proceed as follows:
While the HiPath AP1120 unit is powered-up insert a paperclip or similar into the reset switch at the
back of the unit, hold the switch in for 5 to 10 seconds until all four of the front panel LEDs flash
together. Once this happens release the reset switch.
After a short while only the Power and Ready LEDs should be flashing (the LAN LED may also flicker if
the unit is connected to the LAN as data passes to and from the network).
NOTE #1 If the reset switch is depressed too long all four of the front panel LEDs will be lit steady, this
performs a factory reset of the unit. In this case repeat the procedure above until the unit enters
‘Recovery Mode’.
Unit Manager Network is a MIB browser that is designed to configure the HiPath AP1120 via SNMP
from a PC. This application can be found on the HiPath 3000 Engineers’ Toolkit DVD-ROM and can also
be downloaded from eTAC (ID 14756), follow the link below:
Where can I download the latest software and documentation for the HiPath AP1120 SIP V5.0 IP to
Analogue Adapter?
4.2.1 PC Requirements
4.2.2 Installation
After downloading Unit Manager Network from eTAC simply run the file and follow the prompts.
NOTE #2 Complete installation instructions are available on eTAC if required, consult the following
documents:
These documents can be found on the HiPath 3000 Engineers’ Toolkit DVD-ROM from Issue 4 and can
also be downloaded from eTAC (ID 14756), follow the link below:
Where can I download the latest software and documentation for the HiPath AP1120 SIP V5.0 IP to
Analogue Adapter?
1. Download the KDS from the system using HiPath 3000 Manager E V7 or later (latest version
available on eTAC).
2. In the Setup station object in Systemview define a spare call number for each HiPath AP1120
port (if only one port will be used only define one call number) e.g. 114 and 115 (no hardware i.e.
Access column blank). Add a DDI number (if required) to the DID column e.g. 304601 and 304602.
Also add a suitable Name (e.g. ‘Sales Fax’ and ‘Payphone’). Click on the Apply button.
3. Select the Gatekeeper tab, highlight the call number/s created in step 2 (hold the Ctrl key down if
selecting more than one call number), select the SIP Client radio button and click on the setup
button. Click on the Apply button when complete.
4. Switch to Stationview and find the first call number (e.g. 114) in the left-hand pane, in the right-
hand pane select the Workpoint Client tab. Enter the IP address of the HiPath AP1120 (e.g.
192.168.0.42). Check the Fixed IP address and Analog adapter connected flags. Repeat for the
second call number (e.g. 115) if required, use the same IP address. Click on the Apply button when
complete.
5. Select the Activated features tab. If any of the HiPath AP1120 ports will be used to connect a Fax
machine or a Modem, the Extension Type must be set to Fax or Modem respectively using the
drop-down list.
6.1 Prerequisites
• The HiPath AP1120 unit MUST be in Recovery Mode (see section 4.1).
• Connect the HiPath AP1120 to the PC with Unit Manager Network installed via a straight RJ45
cable.
IP address - 192.168.0.10
Subnet mask - 255.255.255.0
1. Run Unit Manager Network from the Start menu (Start > Programs > Unit Manager Network 3.2 >
Unit Manager Network).
2. You may be presented with a Connect to Unit Manager Window. Earlier versions of Unit Manager
Network had a User name and Password preconfigured. This will also still apply if you have
upgraded from one of these versions to the latest version.
However, if the first version of Unit Manager Network installed was V3.2r14.33 or later there is no
default User name and Password configured. In this case they are configurable by the user
(recommended) by accessing the Unit Manager Configuration (Start > Programs > Unit Manager
Network 3.2 > Configuration > Unit Manager Configuration). In this case the User name and
Password entered at the Connect to Unit Manager Window MUST match the entries stored in
Unit Manager Configuration.
3. You will be presented with the main window of Unit Manager Network.
If the MAC address of a HiPath AP1120 is already shown in the left-hand pane, it should be deleted
before continuing. Right-click the MAC address and select Delete…
First the HiPath AP1120 connected to the PC must be detected by Unit Manager Network, click on
the Autodetect icon on the toolbar. A range of IP addresses can be entered, however in our
case we know that the unit is set to 192.168.0.1 so set the From and To values to this IP address.
NOTE #3 When a range of IP addresses is entered Unit Manager Network is extremely slow at
finding any connected HiPath AP1120 units with the default settings. To speed this process up
check the With specific Timeout/Retry flag and enter a lower Timeout value e.g. 20ms. These
values will be retained next time Unit Manager Network is run.
4. The HiPath AP1120 (AKA Mediatrix 1102) connected should be displayed in the lower Result area.
Check the flag to the left of the IP address to indicate that this unit will be configured. Click on the
OK button.
5. You will be presented with the Overview window. Check that the HiPath AP1120 is running the SIP
software variant, also check that the software version is the latest available on eTAC, and if
otherwise the application software can be upgraded later.
After most commands are executed a Message window will appear, this indicates if the command
has been executed successfully or not. This can be useful for troubleshooting. Click on the Close
button.
7. In the left-hand pane click the + next to the unit MAC address to expand the tree. Right-click
Administration and select Edit…
You should see that all the Use DHCP flags are unchecked. Change the parameters to match the
customer’s LAN as follows:
a. Local IP Address
IP address of the HiPath AP1120 on the customer’s LAN as entered in section 5 step 4.
b. Subnet Mask
c. Default Router
Default router on the customer’s LAN, if running on a flat network enter 0.0.0.0
Primary and secondary DNS server IP address on the customer’s LAN, leave blank if the
customer does not have any DNS servers or if no DNS names will be entered in the HiPath
AP1120.
If the Enable flag is checked ONLY the IP address entered will be able to administer this
HiPath AP1120 using Unit Manager Network (recommended).
This is the IP address of the TFTP server that the HiPath AP1120 should retrieve the new
application software from when a software upgrade is initiated. A secondary TFTP server can
be defined, if required, in case the primary TFTP server fails or is not available. See section 7.
g. Pathname
This is the path to the application software relative to the root path defined in the TFTP server.
Always leave blank, the HiPath AP1120 will then attempt to retrieve the application software
directly from the root of the TFTP server.
Click on the OK button and click on the Close button on the subsequent Message window
after checking that the commands were executed successfully.
8. Although the configuration changes are stored within the HiPath AP1120 they will not become
active until the unit is restarted. Right-click on the MAC address of the unit and select Action >
Restart (Abrupt)…
The next window allows selection of the HiPath AP1120 units that should be restarted. As we are
only restarting one unit click on the OK button.
Click on the Close button on the subsequent Message window after checking that the command
was executed successfully. After the unit has restarted only the Power LED will be lit steady, the
LAN LED will also flicker as data passes to and from the network.
9. At this point you can connect the unit to the customer’s LAN. Also, configure the PC to a valid IP
address, subnet mask and default gateway on the customer’s LAN and connect the PC to the
customer’s LAN. The PC IP address MUST be set as defined in step 7e above if the Enable flag
was checked.
NOTE #4 After changing the IP address of the PC you MUST either restart the PC or restart the
Unit Manager Network 3.2 service on the PC otherwise Unit Manager Network will not detect the
HiPath AP1120.
10. Detect the HiPath AP1120 again by repeating steps 3 to 5 above. If the HiPath AP1120 SIP
application needs to be upgraded to the latest version or if you need to change from HiPath AP1120
H.323 to SIP proceed to section 7, otherwise skip to section 8.
It is important to upgrade the HiPath AP1120 SIP application software to the latest version available on
eTAC. An upgrade may also be required on an existing installation to fix a known problem. In both cases
the procedure outlined below can be used to upgrade the HiPath AP1120 SIP to the latest application
software. This procedure can also be used to change a HiPath AP1120 from H.323 to SIP.
7.1 Prerequisites
• A PC running a TFTP server (3Com 3CDaemon recommended, this is available on the Internet
and is also available on the HiPath 3000 Engineers’ Toolkit DVD-ROM) and the latest version
of Unit Manager Network (this application can be found on the HiPath 3000 Engineers’ Toolkit
DVD-ROM and can also be download from eTAC, link below).
• Latest HiPath AP1120 SIP application software. This can be found on the HiPath 3000
Engineers’ Toolkit DVD-ROM from Issue 4 and can also be downloaded from eTAC (ID
14756), follow the link below:
Where can I download the latest software and documentation for the HiPath AP1120 SIP V5.0
IP to Analogue Adapter?
• WinZip (available on the Internet and is also available on the HiPath 3000 Engineers’ Toolkit
DVD-ROM).
For the purpose of this upgrade procedure we will assume you are upgrading the software as part of the
initial installation following on from section 6 step 10 using the same PC for Unit Manager Network and
the TFTP server.
1. Extract the HiPath AP1120 SIP software to a folder on the PC (e.g. C:\Temp) using WinZip; make
sure that the Use folder names flag is checked.
3. Set the PC to the IP address entered as the Primary server (section 6.2 step 7f), this MUST be the
same IP address defined as the Unit Manager Server (section 6.2 step 7e) if the Enable flag was
checked (e.g. 192.168.0.10).
4. Run the TFTP server (e.g. 3Com 3CDaemon). Define the TFTP server root path. In 3Com
3CDaemon click on the Configure TFTP Server button and change the Upload/Download
directory using the browse button to the folder created when the WinZip file was extracted (e.g.
C:\Temp\SIP_v5.0.22.138_Profile_MX-S5001-02-E_1102). Click on the OK button on this window
and the underlying window and click on the Yes button when prompted to save the changes. Leave
the TFTP server running.
5. Run Unit Manager Network and detect the unit again (unless you are already at this point from
section 6 step 10) by following section 6.2 steps 1 to 4. Right-click on the MAC address of the unit
and select Action > Download Software (Abrupt)…
The next window allows selection of the HiPath AP1120 units that should be upgraded. As we are
only upgrading one unit click on the OK button.
Click on the Close button on the subsequent Message window after checking that the command
was executed successfully.
6. Check the TFTP server, you should see that the file ‘Setup.inf” has been transferred followed by the
remainder of the files; however, depending on the software version not all files may be requested by
the HiPath AP1120. While the upgrade is in progress all LEDs will be blinking at 1 Hz, one at a
time, from left to right.
7. After the upgrade has completed detect the unit again by following section 6.2 steps 3 to 4.
8. You will be presented with the Overview window. Check that the HiPath AP1120 is running the SIP
software variant; also check that the software version displayed is correct.
8 SIP Configuration
1. Run Unit Manager Network and detect the unit again (unless you are already at this point from
section 6 step 10 or section 7 step 8) by following section 6.2 steps 1 to 4.
2. In the left-hand pane click the + next to the unit MAC address to expand the tree. Right-click on
Port and select Edit…
a. Country
b. T38
The T.38 protocol can be enabled or disabled here per port using the drop-down list. This
protocol is only relevant if either of the ports will be used for a Fax machine.
c. Preferred Codec
Select the preferred codec per port using the drop-down list. The following codec’s are
supported on HiPath 2000 and HiPath 3000/5000:
G.723.1
G.729.AB
G.711 a-Law (PCMA)
NOTE #5 If any of the ports will be used for a Fax machine or a Modem the preferred codec
MUST be set to G.711 a-Law (PCMA) for that port.
Click on the OK button and click on the Close button on the subsequent Message window after
checking that the commands were executed successfully.
3. In the left-hand pane click the + next to Port to expand the tree. Right-click on Codec Activation
and select Edit…
Make sure that the required codec’s are enabled, disable all others.
NOTE #6 If any of the ports will be used for a Fax machine or a Modem the G.711 a-Law (PCMA)
codec MUST be enabled and all other codec’s MUST be disabled for that port.
Click on the OK button and click on the Close button on the subsequent Message window after
checking that the commands were executed successfully.
a. SIP Registrar
Enter the HiPath HG1500 / STMI2 or HiPath 2000 IP address (e.g. 192.168.0.40).
b. SIP Proxy
Enter the HiPath HG1500 / STMI2 or HiPath 2000 IP address (e.g. 192.168.0.40).
c. User Name
Enter the call number for each port required (click twice in the entry area to enter a value).
These should be as defined in section 5 step 2 using HiPath 3000 Manager E.

HiPath 3000 Manager E.
Click on the OK button and click on the Close button on the subsequent Message window after
checking that the commands were executed successfully.
6. After the unit has restarted the Power and Ready LED should be lit steady indicating that the unit
has registered to the system. Test each configured port on an incoming and outgoing call using an
analogue DTMF telephone to prove correct operation and payload in both directions.
