After introducing the strategy to provide data sets for automatic learning of fuzzy
controllers, this section introduces several learning methods that could be applied
on these data. Indeed, one of the most important problems in the applications of
fuzzy logic is the automatic derivation of fuzzy models from numerical information
(input-output data pairs) representing the behavior of the real system. Numerous
automatic methods - based on ad hoc data-driven approaches (Nozaki, Ishibuchi,
& Tanaka, 1997; Wang & Mendel, 1992) or on different techniques such as neural
networks (Fullér, 2000; Nauck, Klawonn, & Kruse, 1997) and evolutionary algo-
rithms (GAs) (Cordn et al., 2001) - have been developed to perform this task. (page

This paper explores ways to deal with the category proliferation problem caused by
overlapping classes. Although there are other systems such as neurofuzzy systems
[B2] that are suited to dealing with overlapping classes, our interest lies in reducing
the category proliferation caused by overlapping classes without introducing much
more computational cost or major changes to the architecture of FAM. (page 1244)

A neurofuzzy system with multiple outputs can be realized either by a single SIMO
or MIMO model or by a bank of SISO or MISO models [B2]. In the current study,
the former approach is pursued as it often requires fewer neurons [16]. (page 2)

Human reasoning handles vague or imprecise information. The ability of fuzzy
systems to handle such information is one of its main strengths over other AI tech-
niques, although they are mostly easier to understand and apply. One of the main
difculties in developing a fuzzy system is determining good membership functions.
Fuzzy systems have no learning capability or memory [B2]. To overcome such lim-
itations, fuzzy modelling is often combined with other techniques to form hybrid
systems, e.g. with neural networks to form neuro-fuzzy systems. (page 389)

Each of these linguistic fuzzy rules may be represented at two different levels of
description by defining two different structures (surface structures and deep struc-

for data uncertainty In: The 7th South East Asian Survey Congress, Hong-Kong. 2003
One of the well known approaches to decision making based on imprecise informa-
tion is Fuzzy Logic. This framework is frequently used for decision making in the
presence of uncertainties due to its ability to express imprecise expert knowledge
and rules. Since its introduction by Zadeh (1965), Fuzzy logic was applied to nu-
merous problems and applications due to its ability to provide a framework through
which non-deterministic problems could be addressed. Exact reasoning is therefore
a limiting case of the Fuzzy Logic approach (Fuller, 2000). (page 2)

On the other hand, fuzzy systems are more favorable in that, as their behavior can be
explained based on fuzzy rules and their performances can be adjusted by tuning the
rules. The neuro-fuzzy (Lin and Lee, 1996; Fullér, 2000; Abraham, 2001) approach
is the third that could be experimented within SL modeling. This approach can be
realized as an ANN structure, and the parameters of fuzzy rules can be expressed
as the connection weights of the neural network. (page 241)
