COURSE DESCRIPTION
A broad-based introduction to the study of behaviour and mental processes. This course is suitable for
students who might be interested in taking further courses in psychology. Topics include learning,
development, psychotherapy, the brain and states of consciousness, sensation and perception, memory,
social behaviour, personality, psychological disorders, coping and health, stress, and others.

Remarks:
Not for students who have obtained grade E or above in Psychology in HKALE or equivalent (including
GCEAL but not HKASL) or obtained grade 3 or above in Psychology in the AP Examination.
Not for CUHK students who have taken UGEC2581 or UGED2581.

COURSE OBJECTIVE(S)
At the satisfactory conclusion of this course, students will have achieved the following objectives:
• Compare and contrast main theories and concepts in the field;
• Explain how human behaviour and the mind can be studied empirically;
• Relate phenomena in everyday life to theories of human behavior and the mind, and, to key empirical
studies in psychology;
• Create a scientific poster to explain and illustrate the main findings of a psychological study.

GRADING WEIGHTS
A. Mid-term exam and Final exam, each worth 30% (total 60%)
Exams will consist of multiple-choice, short answer, and short essay questions, and will take two hours
duration.

B. Poster assignment (30%)
In groups you will create a scientific poster, similar to the ones presented at conferences. The poster should
be based on one of the seminal experiments we will discuss in class. The posters will be presented on on
19 July.

C. Attendance in class and participation in group discussions (10%)


Your attendance during the course, and participation in two group discussions will be assessed.

Feedback on the mid-term exam will be emailed to students before the next assignment is due.

Assignments without the properly signed declaration will not be graded by teachers.

Only the final version of the assignment should be submitted via VeriGuide.

The submission of a piece of work, or a part of a piece of work, for more than one purpose (e.g. to satisfy
the requirements in two different courses) without declaration to this effect shall be regarded as having
committed undeclared multiple submission. It is common and acceptable to reuse a turn of phrase or a
sentence or two from one’s own work; but wholesale reuse is problematic. In any case, agreement from
the course teacher(s) concerned should be obtained prior to the submission of the piece of work.
