President Dianne Wilson called the
meeting to order. Dave Kruegel offered an
invocation around Rotary’s success in
eradicating polio throughout the world. He
indicated how hard this goal is to achieve
and how often others have failed. He then
lead the club in the Pledge of Allegiance to
the flag.
He also offered additional bucks for the
stellar play of his team mates, Doug
Damaschino, MarySue Erickson and
Frank May at the recent Bocce Ball
tournament.
~ANNOUNCEMENTS AND EVENTS~
Bocce Ball
Angelo Costanza lead four Moraga Rotary
teams to a wonderful outing at last
Saturday’s Bocce Ball Tournament in
Martinez. All four teams made the cutoff
and played on into the afternoon. Angelo
mentioned that this event has made in
excess of $100 thousand for Polio Plus He
noted that the practice held on Wednesday
went a long way towards sharpening the
skills of our teams.

Our guests included Dennis Rein from the

Moraga-Orinda Fire District, and Michele
Redio and Paul Moss from the Contra
Costa County Medical Reserve Corps.

~RECOGNITIONS~
President Dianne mentioned that Barbara
Bruner had a birthday recently. Since
Barbara was not in attendance we will catch Carol Irwin Rolling With Gary Looking On
her when she returns.

Other Announcements…
President Dianne announced that there
will be a FAB 5 Clubs TGIF Celebration at
Orchard Nursery this Friday evening. See
the flyer for this event at the end of this
newsletter.
She also announced that Orinda Rotary is
sponsoring an Asian Art Festival this
weekend on May 26th and 27th. The flyer
for this event may also be found later in
this newsletter.
Club Paul Harris Awards
Dianne offered an incentive for members
to reach a new level in Paul Harris
Awards. If you are interested in finding out
how close you are to your next Paul Harris
award, let Dianne know and she will get
back to you with the information. The Club
will donate up to 500 Points (or dollars) to
each member to reach our Club goal to
have an ALL Paul Harris Club.
A Twisted Tale - A Story of Competitive
Swimming
Vickie Devlin told a story about her
participating in competitive swimming as a
child. She really enjoyed swimming at the
neighborhood Meadow Swim Club
although she did not learn the sport until
she was 12 years old. She recalled how
she began to participate in the relay events.
In order to compete in the swim meet each
week, she needed to participate in a “swim-
off” to qualify for the event. Her first story
ending was she made the event seventy
percent of the time. Alternatively, Vickie
said she made the event every week.
Herb Wehmeyer correctly guessed the
second ending and won a box of cowboy
cookies!

I just wanted to thank you so much for
awarding me the scholarship last
Thursday. It means a lot to my family
and me and I plan to uphold your
mother's values and carry out her legacy
the right way.
I'm looking forward to Wisconsin and
plan to research ways I can help the
Lamorinda community through the
Moraga Rotary when I'm home during
winter and summer breaks.

~PROGRAM~
Lieutenant Brian South introduced our
guest speakers, Dennis Rein, Emergency
Coordinator for the Moraga-Orinda Fire
District and Michele Redio and Paul
Moss from the Contra Costa County
Medical Reserve Corps.
Today’s presentation was all about
“HEARTSafe Moraga”. The HEARTSafe
program is a partnership between the
Town of Moraga, the Moraga-Orinda Fire
District, Contra Costa County Health
Services and our community. The Town of
Moraga officially became a HEARTSafe
Community in April of 2017. Dennis and
the team from the Medical Reserve Corps
told the audience how to be more aware of
cardiac emergencies and enlist our help to
improve the survival rates in our
community.

Heart attacks are currently the leading
cause of death in the country with a less
than 10 percent survival rate. There are
four steps that can be taken to increase
the chance of surviving a heart attack
• Call 911 right away
• Begin a hands-only CPR procedure
• Early defibrillation
• Early Advanced Care by trained
personnel.
Michele described possible symptoms of a
stroke noting that these symptoms can be
different for men and women. There are
symptoms other than chest pain or
pressure. These include unusual fatigue,
shortness of breath, pain in one or both
arms, nausea and vomiting, sweating and
lightheadedness.
The audience practiced CPR using some
dummies that Dennis brought.
